MANWHORE
hehe, ben, wasn't saying you were being cheap matey just thought that maybe since you were doing it at night you didn't have enough. Mine was installed when the tank was full. I didn't have to even put my hands in the fuel. Spent a bit over 1 hour to install it, no noise, no nothing. good flow. perfect. benl1981
If I don't have much luck with mine I might show it to you. I'm a bit concerned that you havent rotated the sock around the right way though... SK - have you seen the pic on page 2..? MANWHORE
I wouldn't stress too much about the orientation of the sock mate. My car, and others that I have installed, as well as many others that are running gtr pumps on the forums are alright. This orientation fits the best with that bottom plate still in place. I'm not sure if this affects it, but my pump still has the bototm plate in place, and it is sitting on the gtst rubber ontop of this plate. i'm sure that would help hold the pump steady more. Maybe the orientation that I have it clears the tank. It seems like you're spending a fair amount of time doing this. If you want, I can put you through to an honest workshop near our area that do an absolutely great job. benl1981
I know - northern beaches performance? Thats the place you were mentioning before? Wouldnt you have trouble when you get low on fuel as the orientation ensures you pick up from the very bottom. That why you can run the tank very low before you have any fuel pickup issues. Haven't spent too much time. Main wait was the tank seal. Just driving the car now with a noisy pump I'd rather play around with it myself then I know what is done. Hopefully the pump is ok and I can quieten it down. Cheers.. MANWHORE
Yeah, nbp. I'm certain that my 'picking up' of fuel is identical to before the pump swap. Driving the fuel down (not that I do it often), it reaches the same level as before. i.e. I don't suffer from 1/4 tank syndrome Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/166833-gtr-pump-questions/page/4/#findComment-3123215 Share on other sites
benl1981
Well I went to the tuner today and he reckons it is doubly as noisy as a Walbro pump and mentioned that nisy pumps are the first sign of a failing pump. I'll try and remount it on the weekend otherwise I'm going to get a genuine walbro Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/166833-gtr-pump-questions/page/4/#findComment-3125523 Share on other sites
Hotwire
How did you go with the pump, were you able to quieten it down? I have a 32GTR pump in my 33 (there when bought it) and mine is also very noisy. I had no luck repositioning it in the tank, and still makes a lot of noise. Can someone tell me, what would happen should the pump fail? Will the engine just stall, or is it possible to do more damage, ie. if on boost at the time, will it destroy the bottom end? Birnie
Maybe you should clip off the excess metal track from the hose clamp. Looks a bit extended from the general fuel pump area. That could be touching something.....just a thought Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/166833-gtr-pump-questions/page/4/#findComment-3430265 Share on other sites
benl1981
Well I just tested the pump for a couple of seconds without fuel. It sounds really quiet out of the car. (At first I had the hose connected and metal pipe connected - it was noisy then). So I think it must be the way it is sitting in there. My new pump GTR has about a 2mm thick rubber sleeve aroud it so I think Iwill leave that on and see if I can position it better. Anyone else got tips on which way to bend the bracket etc. Very fiddly job. It is really tight in there. There seems hardly enough room to have any gap the whole way round the pump and the relief valve piece at the top. It seems inevitable that it will touch the tank. I'm thinking this might be the reason so many people complain of noisy pumps. WOnder if the sedan fuel tank is different Edited October 24, 2007 by benl1981 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/166833-gtr-pump-questions/page/4/#findComment-3432194 Share on other sites
Birnie
Your bracket looks the same as mine. And when buying after market pumps thru nengun or whoever, it only says Series I/II, not 2 door 4 door I reckon they'd be the same Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/166833-gtr-pump-questions/page/4/#findComment-3432382 Share on other sites
benl1981
I see somebody mentioned they bent the cradle to the right to allow it to clear - was that when looking from above? I did this and added a bit of rubber to test. It is a lot quieter but every now and then it makes some wierd noises. Maybe it doesn't touch all the time but every now and then part of the pump rests on the tank. benl1981
Anyone? I think under braking reasonably hard the pump is hitting the tank - I can hear a thud. I'll have to check it isnt the amp moving around. I have bent the bracket a bit so when viewed from the top it is right of where it was before. benl1981
Will I dont think its moving but it does get a little louder when the car is warmed up and in traffic. Anyone know if they bend the bracket to the right? Also, how loud is yours? Mine is like a buzzing - it doesnt get noisier when I rev it though (compared to idle). Maybe I'm being fussy though. Should it be almost silent? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/166833-gtr-pump-questions/page/4/#findComment-3444455 Share on other sites
SilverECR33
i think i bent mine, inward and towards the right. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/166833-gtr-pump-questions/page/4/#findComment-3444643 Share on other sites
