Hello there,

New guy on the forum, from over the UK.

I know you guys have better idea on old age turbo because you guy are more willing to try new things then people in the UK.

I got myself a car and after long research, I think it is an HKS TA45S turbo.

I can't find much info on it, other than it is OLD... Does anyone have any details on this turbo that they can share?

IE what are the expected output at what boost?

Right now it is not setup properly, but it looks like it can do 1 Bar at 4500rpm, and looks like a healthy 1.4 - 1.5 bar at 5200rpm or so (Not sure if that is the case as the car on the dyno provided stop boosting at 1.2 bar)

I am not too sure if that is good or bad, anyone with single turbo can compare? I know it is no match for modern turbo (T04Z, GT4088R, etc...) Just an idea on what I got and any ideas for improvement would be nice.

Swapping the Turbo may not be an option at the moment as it is running HKS F-Con V Pro 3.0 (yes, old age again), and therefore I can't have it reflash and remap, as I am pretty sure it will be locked.

isnt that the bush bearing old style 1000hp big boy? thats a freaking hefty turbo... i rekon try and sell your ecu and turbo to someone and if you like big power get a HKS T04Z with a kinda smallish exhaust housing to get it up and running a bit earlier and try source yourself a power fc.

I am pretty sure it won't be that big. It has a .72 AR comp and about a .9 A/R Turbine... The turbo base on some of the specs I found (as it was use in the HKS ZeroR), was right between a T04S and a T04R, so I assume about 650hp or so.

Again, since no one have tried it in the UK, no one know. I saw Signal old R32 Demo use the HKS T45S (should be the same), and it made 710ps at 1.8bar (which is more boost then I would like on pump fuel)

I am runing 272 cam and it has forge piston and H-section con rod. Not sure about the crank, but with a Trust extended sump, Trust oil cooler, and oil pressure over 7bar when cold, I doubt it have a standard oil pump in there either.

you are using some pretty big cams there..

A few rb30 commodore vls use the TA45 garrett turbos.. they are 1000hp version.. so yours will be roughly 850 - 1000hp... im taking a wild guess..

Hum...using a RB26 mean I will loose out some response.... I guess given the specs, It should be safe to run 1.6 bar the long as the exhaust gas temp don't go too hot.

AFR is around 11.5 - 12 so I am playing it quite safe... :P

they are not bad. the manifold they come with (cast low mount) is not too bad either. BUT they are old and a bit laggy for the power they produce. I say bin it and replace it with a T04Z but keep your manifold and wastegate. if the car was tuned well to begin with a re-tune is not 100% neccessary (but if you can do it one would be advisable to get the best out of it).

Ive got one on my car, and they look to be about 800 hp, they are certainly bigger than the gt35r 700hp. With the same cams as you, and an rb30, im hoping to get 450rwkw, but thatll need 1.6bar. On the old rb26 it was horribly laggy, but the motor had a cracked piston. It was supposed to make 380rwkw at 1.4 bar on a stock motor. Im only keeping the turbo at the moment, as its like new, and i figure the $2-3000 to put a later gen turbo on it can be spent elsewhere on the motor at this stage.

Dinosaur Garrett with a few slight A/R variations from memory . If you can't afford to change it then about the only practical thing you could do is play with T45 footprint twin scroll turbine housings . The manifold will be split pulsed and should be running I think a 50mm HKS external wastegate .

The best equal in this day and age would be a Garrett GT4088R which also uses a .72A/R compressor housing of similar proportions . The plain bearing GT40 turbos are much cheaper than the ball bearing version .

A TO4Z would pull the power (torque) range down considerably over the TA45S and if you can get the right turbine housing from ATP , a GT3582R could pull it down a bit more again .

Where do you want the power/how much the budget ?

Thats the sad part at the moment. Really have no budget (as in no money left). Just got the car, just got it out of the body shop, finish the interior and suspension. I do want something more modern, but I am just trying to decide if I can live with this turbo on a road driven basis. I will have it properly set it up and hope it does what I want it to do.

If the turbo is "acceptable" when compare to modern equalivent, then I might just leave it the way it is. However, if say a GT4088R with a .82AR is going to be FAR FAR better then what I got now, then it might be worth it to change.

Another thing I do worry about is the fuel pump. I am asking for 650hp crank, and I am running light blue injectors (be is HKS 680cc, DENSO 700cc, SARD 720cc), I am not worry about the injectors. But I think it might only have a HKS 280l/h fuel pump, and I am worry that at the top end it will run out of poof and drop the fuel pressure... That is NOT a good thing.

I am getting the car on the dyno Wednesday to check the AF over, hope it doesn't go bang...

dude, if you know primary school maths you will know a 280lph pump will easily support a 700cc/m injector...

280 litres/h = 280,000 cc/h

divide by 60 minutes

= 4666.67 cc/min divide by 6 injectors = 777.78cc/min...

if you are worried about dropping fuel pressure, then look at a fuel pressure gauge whilst running it up on the dyno.

intersesting oldschool drag setup. just a ta45. big but very agg. they work but. running a airfilter???? all the ones ive seen dont lol. with the abs wiring melting wastegate.

that sort of responce your talking of isnt to bad really. if its in a low gear. if this is you loading it up on the freeway then its a lagmaster :P

Well, just took it out for a drive (finally!!!)

And a lag-monster it is. Nothing below 1 bar (4500rpm), then it is rocket boost to 7K

It is also a top mount using a HKS T04R manifold. Why the jap guy use such an old Turbo is still a mystery for me...

Why did the last owner in UK decide to rebuild the turbo and to change for a new one is also a mystery for me....

Either way, the car does drive nice-ish...Can't wait to get more out of it on the dyno

Making a "T04R" is laughably easy . Take one garden variety plain bearing T4 centre section and fit the "R" wheel to it with a

T04S compressor housing . HKS cropped the common as dirt T04 P trim turbine but I wouldn't bother . Or you could just buy a T04 60-1 turbo and Garrett even now do that with the larger sized BB centre section .

On my car it was a lag monster. The car is a toyota corona with a 1jz in it, auto, 4.6:1 diff gears.

My car would make 10psi at 6000rpm in 1st gear and then full boost at about 5200rpm in higher gears. I don't know if it was just my setup but it only made 240rwkw@17psi. Setup is, FMIC, 3" piping, 4" dump pipe, 3" exhaust, fuel system, microtech, 100RON plus octane booster. The lag wasn't helped by the fact the wastegate was opening up well before it needed to though. No boost controller.

I would stick with it for a bit and see if it makes good power. If so, leave it. Otherwise, I would be looking at a GT3582R with 1.06 to have less lag than this and make more power. GT4088R with .8x a/r would be good also, apparently the PT modded GT4088's with .8x a/r on a 1jz are quite streetable.

Yep Chris, I think me and you must be the only 2 person in the world using this dino... Well, you were using the dino... :(

Other than us, its a load of RX-7, and the old HKS R32 ZeroR which has probably dissolved in the rain by now.

So far it makes 1bar (14.5psi) about 4500rpm, and should see 1.5bar at about 5200rpm, have not check it yet.

Over all, it is streetable... It is a normal NA RB26 when you drive it (no fast or torque by the way), but once that turbo get going, you are GONE!!! You have to hold on to everything and tense your muscle in the neck up other wise your neck will snap or you will leave through the rear wind screen. :domokun:

Will get it dyno today, I hope to make as near to 600 wheel bhp as possible, but might be wishful thinking. :P

Needs a clean for sure... hopefully everything goes well today. :)

Those are the Yanack GT Fender, +25mm on front, +30mm on rear. PAIN in the bum to put on...!!!

But yes, it is a bit of an extreme look and some people like it, some hate it.

I personally love it, just can't wait to get it all clean and set up for a drive.

Car off to Dyno now... Fringers cross that I will have 6 pistons in the block when it comes back. :domokun:

    • Greg speaks wisdom. These dirty old Datsuns are only value when they are cheap. When they are not cheap, there is no value. Sounds contradictory, but it's true. We are now 20 years past the hey day of modifying cheap 90s JDM cars for small amounts of money. This is a different world. If you are rich and can afford not to care about what is effectively wasting money on an old Datto shitter, then I have no reason to argue against it. But if you are wanting to experience what we all experienced back in 2005 (and I bought my car last century!) then there is no way to do it.
    • Short answer: No. Medium answer: No, because you still need to conjure the things out of thin air to bolt them to a NA to make it a NA+T. Long Answer: No - The things you need to conjure - meaning a turbo, intercooling, manifolds, exhaust, intake/manifold/piping, clutch, injectors, fuel pump, AFM (?), ECU + Wiring (woo, N/A loom fun) have to come from somewhere. You could have many scavenged these things from an OEM car that someone had upgraded from and use some of these. This will be cost prohibitive now, especially so in the USA. You'd probably pay the same for newer, upgraded components that are better than old OEM stuff from 25-30 years ago. None of these big ticket items are re-usable for the N/A car. Why not buy new and upgrade while you're there? The only real consideration is turbo and fuel sizing and determining whether you want to stay within the bounds of the OEM engine or get into rebuild territory. These limits ARE lower with a N/A motor and especially N/A gearbox at the starting point. And if you're gonna upgrade those then you may as well consider having them built to begin with. Because everyone here knows you're never far from that next engine rebuild once you start making the power you want... The cars you see on the internet and SAU etc have been built over decades. If you're really clued in... you would sell your US car to somebody for what you paid for it. You would then scour AU JDM pages or SAU and buy a car like Dose's on this forum with your powerful American Dollar. This will save you so much money in the long term. Importing it could be tricky. Or it might not because USA. I have long said the only reason 90's Japanese stuff took off was because a) Japanese people had Japanese cars so that is what they used b) Australians could import these cars to Australia with very minimal changes and use them on the road here c) Neither country had well-priced access to US or EU Sports Cars. I don't believe the JDM scene would have taken off in Australia at all if we had EU priced EU BMW M offerings, or more especially the AUS V8 Scene would never have existed if we had the multitude of US cars like Camaros, Mustangs, Corvettes at the prices you folks do. After all - Do the math. I would say put a V8 in your R34 and that's the smart way forward. It is. I did it. I know this from my own experience. But at that point there's no reason to simply not buy a C5 or C6? It would be simpler and easier and cheaper and bette-
    • Reading all this... hurts lol. I have an ENR34 5MT and I paid an inflated USA price for the car alone, had to do tons of preventative maintenance past that, and so I'm over $30K USD into the car already and haven't even touched power.  I wanted to +t it. Not even trying to make GTR numbers, I'd be happy with 250hp.  Can I get away with paying much less to make that happen?
