Evening All,

I'm getting some gauges to put in for my R33, what should I get.. i'm thinking Boost, Oil Temp and Oil Pressure.. however i'm weighing up swapping the Boost for Water Temp as I have a turbo timer that doubles as a boost gauge with a memory for max boost (which isn't overly helpful).. I'm looking at the Just Jap Autogauges..

I'm looking at doing some track days.. And think that oil temp + pressure are pretty neccesary..

Also i'm guessing it would be better to get ones with warning functions..

Any thoughts would be great as I need to order them tomorrow morning to get them in time for the weekend to get installed!

Cheers

water temp oil pressure (get boost if you done have a elec boost controller for read out, not sure how accurate the tt is if it is then thats fine but hard to see)

oil temp

exhaust temp

fuel pressure

get them in that order, first 2 lines most important really

water temp is deffently good to get as the stock one isn't spot on. Oil temp is helpful, not only on the track, but when u get into your car in the morning, you'll know when the oil is at the right temperature to boot it. Ane oil pressure. Thats my 2cents.

Ok cheers, so from what everyone says, water temp, oil temp, oil pressure... Looks like that's probably the go than.. I can get a boost one later as my stock one and turbo time are pretty much in line with each other and seem to be fine..

Has anyone used the autogauge ones with the warnings? are they configurable warnings...

Update, I went with the 3 din package from JustJap with oil temp/water temp and boost, i might get an oil pressure one seperately at a later date if I feel I need it..

I'm heading to thailand in september, so might pick up some decent ones over there to replace these!!

Cheers for everyone's help, I think Oil Pressure + EGT will be the next ones to get, OR get a digital readout that can display all of them..

Ok the gauges have arrived, now, I got oil temp + water temp + boost..

Question is, in an R33 gts-t, for the water temp, do I just unplug the stock sensor, or can I run them both at the same time? What do other people do? Does the ECU need the water temp sensor to be plugged in??

ecu water temp is needed to allow for cold start maps.

most people use a alloy fitting in the top Radiator hose that has a threaded insert so the temp probe can sit in the water flow.

most A/M guage probes dont fit in the std dash guage sensor location on the intake manifold.

best bet is a generic or Greddy adapter that can be put in the top hose.. i made one up just using alloy pipe - not as pretty as the alloy made ones from greddy etc

Thanks guys, Ronin, i'll send you a PM..

Cheers Chris, I had a feeling the water temp was needed for the ECU as it's one of the readouts you can get from consult when your reading off the OBD..

For the boost, i'll just add another T piece into the line after the one for my Turbo Timer.. Oil temp just goto get a sandwich plate, anyone recommended other than Just Jap or should I just get a remote oil cooler..

yeah i was sick of cheap gauges not being 100 true, so i paid a bit more for these. these are the exact same as the SABER gauges with a different logo on them. they have the same hardware and bits in the box as the saber ones also. just 100 bux cheaper than saber.

mate they look good, I want something that matches the stock R33 gauge cluster and they suit it well

what is the gauge on the left? Oil pressure/Oil temp?

just wondering how you go about hooking up the Oil Temp and Oil pressure gauges?

gauge on the left is oil temp. i used to have oil pressure but i believe oil temp is better for a daily driver.

i have an oil cooler and relocation kit so i just screwed the sensor into the remote mounting block, the relocation kits really are great for many reasons.

water temp gauge is wired into an inline radiator hose sensor.

  • 2 weeks later...

^^ Did you use the existing water temp sensor? Or the one that came with the gauges? Can you use the existing one and wire off it?

I'm going to use Ronin's Greddy radiator adaptor that has a plug for it..

Next question is:

How do you feed the wires through the firewall of a R33, do I use a coat hangar or something? Do I need to remove the kick panel to access it?..

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
