As you most of you know, my GTR was broken into and 'stripped' just on 2 months ago. It was obvious the car had been followed and targeted. The windows were smashed - and the alarm didn't go off. I live in South Yarra.

One of the many items stolen were my old number plates - GTR-88.

Well...

I was sent a PM from a guy on the MCCR forum asking me if I had my car back, and was it white - as he saw a white Skyline with GTR-88 plates on Dandenong Rd, near Chapel!

It gets better...

It just so happened that his car was broken into the other night. In South Yarra. Same deal - window broken, alarm not set off - they took his Apexi gear... but he saw them doing it and chased. He got a partial description on the car and plate:

White import hatch (GTi-R, Charade, Starlet, WRX etc) with loud exhaust and plate something like 'TURBRO'.

I noticed in a thread here that Chop saw this same car near Chaddy!

I'm not sure if these are connected... but I rang Prahran police anyway. If you see either car - GTR-88 or TURBRO - call the cops.

Pretty stupid to be driving around with stolen plates..

Good work P.D. James :D you are well on the case!

Lets hope this scum gets caught, and the cops can actually do something to help out in this situation. Amazing, real crime to be policed.

Ah - it all makes sense now :D

Must have been the smell of pancakes impairing my judgement.

Do we have a confirm on the car - GTi-R?

See it has a titanium Nismo shifter. Grrrr.

Gordo - Haha. Just call me Jessica Fletcher.

yeh it mite of been white gti-r or starlet

it was dumped low on its ass

big 3.5" stainless steel muffler on the rightside making very loud sound

multispoke rims 17" or 18"

black personalised plates with "TURBRO"

pretty sure there was bonnet vents

driver was some tall skinny white guy, window half down, wearing a dark coloured cap.

hope that helps

would this be a joint mccr and sau club bashing? cos me and boys in the sig want in!

I remember seeing those plates around the S.E. suburbs myself... don't remember anymore details on the car though. Will keep an eye out.

I'll put my name down for the lynching mob too! People stress when they see a 6'4" guy step out of his Skyline...

carry a crowbar, and if an officer asks what its for, say its ur lover...or something

anyway yes i will keep eye out also but im in northern suburbs but do a lot of deliveries everywhere in the work truck, which means i can run them off the road or throw glass peices like shurikans at their necks

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
