Hey guys ..

I have r33 series 2 model rb25det .. 3inch exh cat back, triple core radiator, bov, apexi power in take filter is only mods atm, have a fmic to go on ..

anyway my question is, i purchased boost controller, upped the boost 2 pound and its pinging, even on stock boost sometimes its pinging around 5-6g in second .. i got the timing and everything adjusted, but still the same.

boost is coming on really smooth also, dont feel much force, also im getting 300km per tank, no matter how i drive, sometimes with long highway trips, any answers would be appreciated as its frustrating me.. easily should run 8-10psi without pinging

Are you sure its pinging and not missing, some ppl do get confused.

Pinging sounds like someone's shaking a can of rocks under your hood. Does it sound like that?

Could be your fuel pump dying, even though you don't get much economy and its running rich, it probably can't keep up under high load/heavy acceleration thus leaning out.

well i wouldnt call it shaking a can under my hood, i back off soon as i hear it, and i do know what pinging is .........

as for the fuel pump i will try it mate, thanks

it is running extremely rich .. i just cant figure out why .. if i drive hard i get 290 - 300km.. if i grandma it, 290 - 300km ,, doesnt make a difference :thumbsup:

any other suggestions would be a great help :domokun:

Your bad economy would have something to do with your really rich AFR's. Stock ECU still? Could be various other things too making it rich.

It can still run rich when it's not under hard acceleration. But when you do give it a bit, the pump can't flow enough fuel to keep up with the air intake.

More air = more fuel.

might be oxygen sensor. A stuffed O2 sensor would make it run rich, doesn't matter how you drive it.A car running lean doesn't make it ping. pinging is 99% of the time caused by too much timing. It might be a few different problems, but i think its pinging because of something to do with your timing. Maybe your CAS is stuffed...

a car running lean will make it ping. if it is running lean then the timing will be too advanced for that amount of fuel. and when it runs lean your cylinder temps increase which means there is more chance of pre-ignition. too much timing causes pinging in the same way that running lean does. if it is running rich then it won't ping as easy. it may be worth getting your base timing checked in case it is way out.

how many litres are you using to get 300kms? saying that you are getting 300km to a tank means nothing. if your guage is out and you may only be using 3/4 of a tank. i was getting a bit less than that out of my car and my afr's were 14.7 at cruise and around 12 below 5000rpm and then dropped to 11.5 by 7500, which isn't very rich. it was just the way i drove, and the fact that i did a lot of short trips on cold start enrichment, and drove spiritedly when it was warm.

very very unlikely though, to the point where to would be running way way too lean that theres no way he'd be able to drive it, it wouldn't be drivable. i'd even go to the point of saying fuel would be the very last reason a car would ping, theres other things that would make it ping before fuel would, like hotspots inside the cylinder, spark plugs too hot, or even shit fuel, but the most likely cause would be timing, any mechanic would look at this first and if thats not the problem they'd look at other possibilties, running lean can help in causing pinging but its doesn't cause it to happen by itself.

if you set your car up for 12.0 afr's and then run 13.0 afr's it will ping it's arse off. we put a new fuel pump into my mates r33 a few weeks back. before the pump went in it was running about 13.0 afr's and pinging it's arse off. put the new pump in and the afr's went down to mid 11's and there is absolutely no sign of pinging.

yes timing does play a major part in pinging, but so does the amount of fuel. hot spots in the cylinder, etc are cause by temps too high. running lean raises the temp.

what about injectors, dirty or half blocked maybe not spraying right and causing a hot spot. even coke build up causes hotspots.

again, running lean doesn't cause hotspots either, other things would do that before running lean does, and in this specific problem he ain't running lean its running rich. and thats what i'm replying to. I agree running lean does raise the temp but there other things to consider before saying its pinging because its running lean. My car was running very lean, in the mid 14's but it never pinged.

if the car was running that lean that it raises the temp that high for it to ping he would know something was wrong before hearing it ping, but he only got 2 problems, 1 running rich, and 2 pinging.

Just because its running rich in certain part of the map or on closed loop, it can still run lean in another part eg at WOT.

And I also take it that your saying that I can put a crappy fuel pump that can't keep up in my car and it won't ping even if everything like the timing, sparkies, injectors else is ok,? I'm talking about when it's under load/WOT not cruising.

You might engage an automotive engineer to write a report stating that the lights meet the performance requirements of the standard even if they are missing, for example, the markings.
