Hows it,just wondering if anyone could help me out.

I just put a RB20det into my skyline and when i was putting it in i didnt bother to check the turbo out,i just assumed it was a factory one.

So with the new motor in i take it for a spin, now factory turbos start to spool up around 2g,well this one didnt start till bout 4g and then went hard from 5gs on.So i go home pull the turbo off (assuming something is wrong with it)and put an RB25DET turbo on it.So i drive around with this one on for about a day and man wat a difference, yea it spooled up quicker but it just didnt have nowhere near the kick my old one had.

So i was wondering if anyone knows of a good place in auckland where i can get my old turbo recond or get the bits i need to recond it myself. Also any tips on how to get my turbo spooling up faster.cheers

rb20s just don't really have much spooling power to start off with. I would say that you were fairly close to the mark with your stock rb20 turbo. Naturally, since the rb25 one makes mroe power, it will spool later.

Apart from the usual - freeing the intake - filter, fmic, freeing up the exhaust - highflow cat, dump/front/catback, there is not a lot you can do

Yea ive done full 3inch exhaust,Mi-tec fmic, apex pod,hks ssq bov, dual stage boost controller and thats about it engine wise.

it's not a stock RB20 or RB25 turbo.

possibly a stock VG30 which would explain the crappy spool time followed by crappy top end.

Stock RB20 turbom from silver top RB20 has 16v on the compressor cover.

stock RB25 turbo's have either 42v3 or similar on the comp cover.

exhaust wheel looks to be ceramic still. but it is definitely bigger than the 20 and 25 wheels.

its not a vg30 rear wheel..its a high flow of some sort.

Why is the vg30 considered a bad turbo? It is BB - has the same comp cover and wheel as the R33 turbo and the same exh housing as the R34 turbo (larger)..

Cause it's a turbo designed for a 3L and he had it on an Rb20.

it's not a good turbo for it.

but as you said, it's not a VG30 turbo so I'm not sure what it's from then.

The reason why they say that the STOCK vg30 is a pos is because it is basically an rb20 turbo internal put inside an op6 exhaust housing/45v comp housing (of course this differs between the many different versions of vg30s - at one stage, I had 4 different models of vg30 in the workshop).

    • Hi all, Long time since I've posted here. Looking for some advice on what I can remove to further identify the cause of my issues.  I can move the passenger seat forward and back but the knob used to adjust the seat angle is pretty much free spinning, there's very little resistance.  Removing the side cover I can see that the chain is intact but the shaft for the adjustment spins without the gear attached to it moving.  What's my next step for disassembly here? Is this a common fault? Just being a little cautious as I didn't want to start removing bolts for a spring to fly out or something equally as stupid.  Cheers
    • Those above shitboxes, mediocre and above usually have a turbo strapped to them, hence the slightly higher octane is required.

    • I mean, I got two VASS engineers to refuse to cert my own coilovers stating those very laws. Appendix B makes it pretty clear what it considers 'Variable Suspension' to be. In my lived experience they can't certify something that isn't actually in the list as something that requires certification. In the VASS engineering checklist they have to complete (LS3/NCOP11) and sign on there is nothing there. All the references inside NCOP11 state that if it's variable by the driver that height needs to maintain 100mm while the car is in motion. It states the car is lowered lowering blocks and other types of things are acceptable. Dialling out a shock is about as 'user adjustable' as changing any other suspension component lol. I wanted to have it signed off to dissuade HWP and RWC testers to state the suspension is legal to avoid having this discussion with them. The real problem is that Police and RWC/Pink/Blue slip people will say it needs engineering, and the engineers will state it doesn't need engineering. It is hugely irritating when aforementioned people get all "i know the rules mate feck off" when they don't, and the actual engineers are pleasant as all hell and do know the rules. Cars failing RWC for things that aren't listed in the RWC requirements is another thing here entirely!
    • I don't. I mean, mine's not a GTR, but it is a 32 with a lot of GTR stuff on it. But regardless, I typically buy from local suppliers. Getting stuff from Japan is seldom worth the pain. Buying from RHDJapan usually ends up in the final total of your basket being about double what you thought it would be, after all the bullshit fees and such are added on.
