Hey guys, I have most of the parts together and ready for my engine although I need to know what spec cams I should be running for best spool time + peak power.

My setup is going into a VL street/strip car, mid nines is the goal.

Currently I've got rb26 head (would I get away with a minor port job or should i go big with this?)

1000hp plain bearing GARRETT GT42 with .91 rear

1000cc sard injectors

bosch 044 pump

adjustable cam gears

etm exhaust manifold, 4" dump pipe etc

GTR-LINK ecu (will be changed for a motec or autronic but I just want to get the car running now)

RB30 bottom end with CP forgies, spool rods etc.

Gearbox is a jatco 4spd with all the fruit, rated to hold 550rwkw. full manual reverse pattern valve body, 4000 tce stall, transbrake etc.

any help with this would be appreciated as I'm pretty stuck on which cams to use at the moment.

I'm aiming for around 500rwhp on pump fuel with under 25psi, does this sound achievable with the above mentioned setup?

cheers

If your aiming for 500rwhp, i would recommend downsizing a lot of your components, as they will be causing a lot more lag than is necessary for that power, with 272deg 10.2mm cams and a good port job you should see close to 700rwhp with 25psi. Im basing these power figures on a manual though, not allowing for the loss of power through the convertor.

Theres no way he'll get anywhere near 700rwhp on 25psi! 500rwhp yes. Are you eventually aiming for high 8's or low 9's as thats too big a turbo for what you need. Id sell it and get a t04z if ur not aiming for lower times down the track. I think ur gearbox will limit you to mid 9's anyway so the bigger turbo would be a waste. For cams id suggest 264's with around 10mm lift. Theyd give you a nice compromise

My new motor should make 450rwkw @ 1.6 bar with a smaller turbo, to run a 9 you will need a turbo that big, but will need more than 500rwhp. There have been plentyof vl turbos running 9's with jatco 4spds

You dont need a turbo that big to run a 9! One vl has run 9.8 with a gt35 with a 66mm compressor and one recently ran 9.3 with a to4z so you dont need a gt42. And which vls and how many have ran a 9 with 4 speed jatcos???

no vls have run a 9 on a 4spd jatco, only the 3speeds. im aiming to break my brothers record of 10.1 @ 133 with the 4spd.

im using the gt42 because once ive run the 9 i want then im going to throw in a glide, 9" and some tubs and get serious but for now i just want something that i can cruise on the street and have a bit of fun with.

Im aiming for 500rwhp on pump fuel for the street, hoping for somewhere around 650+ race tune and c16.

ur using a GT42 and u lot r only expecting 650hp on race fuel? :D

that thing should make very close to 900hp with the works

EDIT-

With a turbo that big, ur power band is gonna be up in the high rev range, so a 272 or possibly even a 280 would be the go (whats it revving to?) with about 10.5mm lift

im not sure what rpms to expect with the 30 bottom end, maybe 8500? not sure about 900hp, boostn's setup is alot more serious than mine and its making 915 with a much bigger turbo. ill be happy with 650.

Yeah they can be off the shelf if you want. Just look up nengun or greenline and take ur pick. Im building a 26/30 aiming for low 9's. I got my cams off lukevl in brisbane. They are custom ones i think. They are something like 268 and 272 with 10.5mm lift. Id get them off him if i was you. Kyle sjould be able to help you out with choosing the rigt cams. He knows his stuff!

Yeah into a vl. Was supposed to already be going but somehow changed from a 25/30 with a gt35 and trimatic to a 26/30 with a mr turbo t72 and glide. You know how it goes - well if im doing this, i may aswell get this, oh bugger it ill go all out! Its taking a lot longer and costing a hell of a lot more $$$ than first thought.

exactly mate im the same lol.

mine went from an rb30 with a gt35 (had it running for 1 week) then pulled it apart to go 26/30 with a gt42 lol. keep me posted on how yours goes

my workshop told me HKS step 2 cams (264deg, 10mm lift) are good enough for what i want..

thing is i "only" got a gt35/40... so yeah. but im pretty sure the motor wouldnt have any problems hitting 500-600rwhp, but the gearbox wont like it.

as for porting, i didnt get any done as the 26head flows more than enough, well for what i require anyways

    • Hi...so a "development" here aswell The swap is "done" and car went "test drive" BUT it seems the clutch(maybe gearbox?) is a little bit sad? I bought this clutch kit https://justjap.com/products/xtreme-heavy-duty-organic-clutch-flywheel-kit-nissan-skyline-r31-r32-r33-push-type "Problem" is that the first gear is hard to put into and it seems that the clutch is not disengaged. It was not the problem with the old clutch...(or like sometime the first gear would not get as easy specialy when the fluid was cold) So? Can it be like...bad "install" or is the clutch wrong ((it should not have been) i done research to get the right one) Or is this "normal" with new clutch and needs to be break in?
    • @Duncan I can try  and thanks i did not thought about VIN and part numbers for 33/34. @GTSBoy yeah it looks like iam gonna do that

    • Hey everyone, Wanted to pick some brains about this issue I'm having with rebuilding my 33 rack (PN is 49001-19U05). All of the tutorials/videos I've seen online are either R34 or S Chassis racks which seem to be pretty straightforward to disassemble but this process doesnt carry over to my rack. Few of the key differences that I've noted The pinion shaft on the other racks bolt on with 3 torx bolts: Whereas my rack bolts on with 2 allen head bolts: These changes are pretty inconsequential but the main difference is how you pull the actual rack out of the housing. The other skyline/s chassis racks can be taken out by tapping the rack out of the body with a socket and it just slides right out. I'm unable to do that with my rack because there's a hard stop at the end that doesn't let the seal/shaft be tapped out. Can also see a difference in the other end of the rack where mine has a notch that looks like you're able to use a big wrench to unthread 2 halves of the rack whereas the other racks are just kinda set in with a punch. My rack: Other racks: TLDR; Wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt this specific model of steering rack for the R33 and if there were any steps to getting it done easier or if I should just give this to a professional to get done. Sorry if this post is a bit messy, first one I've done.
