Well what a nite!

Decided to drive the car.

Everything is fine. I was at the street towards Jess's, at the lights I felt car limping, then head Unit died. Traffic light changes to green! So I had to move otherwise id be stuck there. I managed to limp it past the speed cameras. Then felt car about to die, no electrics or very little was working. luckily I was able to pull over on the side. Stopped. Car went dead. :( errr zomgwtfbbq!

Didn't know what to do. Checked phone book see who would be able and knows stuff called up Norm, he said to check intercooler pipes, checked, nothing wrong, check fuses, nothing wrong, checked battery, nothing wrong.

Decided to call Lizjane to help me jump start car (couldnt clutch start it as I was going up a hill and there were heaps of cars coming up my ass) see if that works or not... Called her.. THANKS! But luckily a P plater (Justin) in a Mazda? Pulled over, He had jumper leads! ooo. Called LJ not to worry. He said yea I can help ya, because my integra (Maybe wrong) usually has this issue too.

Jump start car.. It starts... they leave... I rev it a bit.. car's battery would fall to 9volts... then 7 then 5!!! zomg wtf... Rang a few other people. Dave/Norm/LJ/ Sms'ed everyone lawl  Figured no where I can get car working.

Decided that I had to get a towie... Norm SMS'ed me some, but they didn't have any cars avaliable. Luckily I used my 3's LocalSearch feature to go on the internet and I was able to find a towie where I had stopped. Didnt even need to type in my location!. How cool ;)

Anyways ring towie, he said yea $150 back home I was expecting more, but hey desperate times desperate measures. 1.5hrs later he finds me and Tows the car back home. Managed to push the car into the garage.

During my waiting time.. I was bored and used MSN on my fone :D hehe

Notes/Thank You!'s:

Im very surprised that the first person to pull over and offer assistant was a P plater and his sister/gf? (In another car) stopped to give me help.

Then another taxi asked if I needed help.

Then another P plater slowed down and was going to pull in, but I didnt need them so they pulled out.

Another taxi slowed down asking if I need help.

An old dude and his famiy in a 4WD slowed down asking if I was ok.

Thanks all for asking if I was ok...

Thanks also to: Norm/Lizc0rrrr/Dave/Steve-o/Ed/LizJane/Corinne/Jess/Mansoor/Supra James/Mr Teh/Beau/Chris/Other Chris. And everyone else who replied to my sms. :D

Lets hope I can get this fixed before Sunday's cruise or DECA! :(

Problem: I think my alternator is broken, since the battery is new (~4weeks). Starter motor is ok, starts fine. Just that when it starts the alternator isnt charging the battery so it conks out.

Solution: Sorting out if I can borrow an alternator tomorrow.

Anyone selling a R33 gtst alternator or know where I can get mine reconditioned?

Like i said in my sms Doodz, the alternator will more than likely be rebuildable .. if you find one cheap then buy that and replace it, either way the old ones gotta come out.

try another battery if you have it, then read the voltage at the battery, if lesds than 13.5 volts then it confirms your alternator is kaput.

Exact same thing happened to me in the Cefiro on the M2..... head unit went... then lights.... then D.E.A.D.... got mate to come jump me... off i went... 1km down the rd... D.E.A.D.... call towie... $120 + 3hrs later pushed POS car in garage... BEER OCLOCK!

I've driven a car from Castle Towers all the way back to Cherrybrook with a screwed alternator.

Only made it home cause I kept my heel on the accelerator every tme I had to slow down or stop. If the revs got below 4500rpm the engine would start to die.

yeah i've had altenator die on the GTST. of all places it died as I was pulling into the inspection station at silverwater. I had to push it into the inspection bay! haha. all I did was get my old man to go home and pinch the battery out of the GTR. I drove as far as I could till the GTST battery died, then did the same on the GTR's battery. :(

bugger vic, i had mine start to fail not far from mine... managed to get one from JJ or some wreckers... bit of swearing and help i got it in the next day pretty easily... not really hard... just annoying..

Do do do another one bites the dust!

  • 2 weeks later...

Update....

So I got a 2nd hand alternator from j j supposedly it was "working" I put it on car did the same thing, it wouldnt charge at all.!! :P

So I decided to take my old alternator to grey imports and have it rebuilt. Was suppose to pick it up last Friday but I was lazy. So I got it today. Put that back into the car and BAM straight away car's volts would goto 14.5v and max 14.6 and no higher.

Now everything is working fine! w00t

btw I did all the work myself, after Norm helped me remove the first alternator.. I put the 2nd hand one back on. Removed the 2nd hand one THEN put back the rebuilt one. Im kinda like an expert now!

Pretty happy that I did work on the car, not being a mechanic and a n00b etc... :nyaanyaa:

See here for tut on how to remove/put alternator on car.

    • I'm looking for some real world experiences/feed back from anyone who has personally ran a EFR7670 with a 1.05 exhaust housing or a .83 I'm leaning towards the .83 because its a street car used mostly for spirited driving in the canyons roads. I"m not looking for big numbers on paper. I want a responsive powerband that will be very linear to 8000 rpm. I dont mind if power remains somewhat flat but dont want power to drop off on top. The turbo I've purchased is a 1.05, although the mounting flange T3 vs T4 and internal vs external waste gates are different on both housings, I not concern about swapping parts or making fabrication mods to get what I want. Based on some of the research I've done with chat gpt, the 1.05 housing seems to be the way to go with slightly more lag and future proofing for more mods but recommends .83 for best response/street car setup. AI doesn't have the same emotions as real people driving a GTR so I think you guys will be able to give me better feed back 😀
    • Surely somebody has one in VIC. Have you asked at any shops?  Is this the yearly inspection or did you get a canary?
    • This is where I share pain with you, @Duncan. The move to change so many cooling system pieces to plastic is a killer! Plastic end tanks and a few plastic hose flanges on my car's fail after so little time.  Curious about the need for a bigger rad, is that just for long sessions in the summer or because the car generally needs more cooling?
    • So, that is it! It is a pretty expensive process with the ATF costing 50-100 per 5 litres, and a mechanic will probably charge plenty because they don't want to do it. Still, considering how dirty my fluid was at 120,000klm I think it would be worth doing more like every 80,000 to keep the trans happy, they are very expensive to replace. The job is not that hard if you have the specialist tools so you can save a bit of money and do it yourself!
    • OK, onto filling. So I don't really have any pics, but will describe the process as best I can. The USDM workshop manual also covers it from TM-285 onwards. First, make sure the drain plug (17mm) is snug. Not too tight yet because it is coming off again. Note it does have a copper washer that you could replace or anneal (heat up with a blow torch) to seal nicely. Remove the fill plug, which has an inhex (I think it was 6mm but didn't check). Then, screw in the fill fitting, making sure it has a suitable o-ring (mine came without but I think it is meant to be supplied). It is important that you only screw it in hand tight. I didn't get a good pic of it, but the fill plug leads to a tube about 70mm long inside the transmission. This sets the factory level for fluid in the trans (above the join line for the pan!) and will take about 3l to fill. You then need to connect your fluid pump to the fitting via a hose, and pump in whatever amount of fluid you removed (maybe 3 litres, in my case 7 litres). If you put in more than 3l, it will spill out when you remove the fitting, so do quickly and with a drain pan underneath. Once you have pumped in the required amount of clean ATF, you start the engine and run it for 3 minutes to let the fluid circulate. Don't run it longer and if possible check the fluid temp is under 40oC (Ecutek shows Auto Trans Fluid temp now, or you could use an infrared temp gun on the bottom of the pan). The manual stresses the bit about fluid temperature because it expands when hot an might result in an underfil. So from here, the factory manual says to do the "spill and fill" again, and I did. That is, put an oil pan under the drain plug and undo it with a 17mm spanner, then watch your expensive fluid fall back out again, you should get about 3 litres.  Then, put the drain plug back in, pump 3 litres back in through the fill plug with the fitting and pump, disconnect the fill fitting and replace the fill plug, start the car and run for another 3 minutes (making sure the temp is still under 40oC). The manual then asks for a 3rd "spill and fill" just like above. I also did that and so had put 13l in by now.  This time they want you to keep the engine running and run the transmission through R and D (I hope the wheels are still off the ground!) for a while, and allow the trans temp to get to 40oC, then engine off. Finally, back under the car and undo the fill plug to let the overfill drain out; it will stop running when fluid is at the top of the levelling tube. According to the factory, that is job done! Post that, I reconnected the fill fitting and pumped in an extra 0.5l. AMS says 1.5l overfill is safe, but I started with less to see how it goes, I will add another 1.0 litres later if I'm still not happy with the hot shifts.
