I just finished mine. It has the stealth look in the day and full 3D lettering illumination.

The top garnish is the illuminated one with lights off. Below it are the factory series 1 & 2:

Lights on. Red becomes much richer in colour at night:

Notice the raised illuminated lettering creating the 3D effect:

All in all I'm happy with the outcome as it's exactly how I wanted it. It took me 9 months from start to finish though! Mainly through trial & error and finding the spare time to do it. It also costs a fair bit to make aswell. But well worth it :P

geez

I could have just stuck with the stock one instead of buying a series 1.

care to explain how you wired it all up?

im off to bed now so I will read your response tommorow.

Stock series II garnish is not transparent so won't work. You must have a series 1.

How to wire it up is described in the other illuminated topics.

HotPlates - your garnish looks great. I dont know how many secrets you want to give away... :D

I presume you mask the letters, and paint the whole garnish in either an undercoat, or several coats of white to stop light coming through. How did you mask the letters?

And when you did your final white coat over the whole thing, is it just a really light coat over the letters, so the light shines through?

I've got my S1 garnish all wired up, just ready for the paint job when i get around to it!

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Trav. Thanks for the compliment. Trust me when I say a lot of work went into this to get it perfect!

For longevities sake, before spraying anything make sure you prep it. Otherwise all that hard work spraying the panel is going to go down the drain when the paint starts flaking or peeling in 6 months time. Not good.

Before I did any painting or masking I thoroughly cleaned the garnish with Wax & Grease remover. I then got a low grit sandpaper and sanded the whole panel. This will enusre the paint will adhere. Next you will need to spray a plastic primer on. Once that's done you can then mask the letters. Because I did a 3D effect it was a lot more difficult to achieve! The masking part requires a lot of patience either way.

Then start on your undercoat. I used a grey because it is easier to neutralise than black when spraying over with white.

Peel off the tape from the letters, then do a few even light coats of white until you get the desired effect.

Good luck,

Steve

Thanks for the tips Steve.

When you masked the letters, you would have had to push the masking tape down over the sides of the raised letters to get that 3D effect. I presume you used a really sharp knife to make it easier to trim the excess? I guess you'd want to use good quality tape thats going to stay down too.

They go red on brakes... I'm thinking about making either a flashing blue one for shows to go with the neons on the car (programmable) or to make it flash a number of different colours, or just ultra violet  Haven't quite decided... all will cost me about $280 to $300...

There is an easy way :D either through me or MLT15E (also on the forums) but I have yet to actually sell one cause people get scared at the price :domokun:

Well i bought one from MLT15E and the guy has totally shafted me. The panel is gashed under the paint and marked so doesnt look good especially when any light reflects off it. Call me fussy but maying that high price for it i expect something in pretty good nic. Despte all his talk has totally shafted me and not replaced or refunded. I refuse to put a sub par panel on my car!!!!

Very very disappointed, i really want this. :D

Hey

Would you make a couple and sell in a group buy?

I would be quite interested in a either red led or blue led background.

Can u make it for a Series 2 R33? ;)

i think i read further back in the thread that you cant do it for a series 2 r33?

Correct me if im wrong, otherwise id certainly do mine as well :(

yeh seems as though its done already.

I wouldnt mind one for my Series 2 as they really look awesome :action-smiley-069:

YES they can be made for series 2's

You just have to get a series 1 garnish

You're not the first person to complain about this. I had to completely re-do one for a mate who bought it off MLT15E... I'm not going to say anything else on the matter...

If anyone is interested in one, let me know, cause I'm currently making one for Guilt Toy, so doing a few wouldn't bother me :)

PM me as well, I don't really keep an eye on this thread... Price is $350, happy to answer most questions :)

$350! geez lol

I spent $52 on a series 1 garnish and my mate is going to help me with the electrical side of it.

then ill go get some colour coded paint made up to spray over the garnish and peel the tape off.

should look awesome.

I'll see how i go anyway.

If its crap ill keep you in mind 'DRD-00F'

Hey, the price is what it is... nothings cheap about it and it's not fun to make :action-smiley-069:

And it gets proffesionally painted in the colour of the car...

I still reckon people should give it a go if they have a decent understanding of electronics though

Hey i just saw this thread then, don't know if anyone still posts on this.

Anyway, i have a Series 1, 1995 R33. Would i be able to light up my stock 'Skyline' thing since it'd be the right type, isn't it?

yeh considering series 1 garnishes are the ones us series 2 owners need u wont have to buy one now.

u will need to adremal the garnish to place a led circuit board inside.

follow the step by step guide somewhere on the thread

    • Hello Liam - HA - somewhere in flies - possibly I have an update, but I have been so busy, projects have taken a back seat to getting business back on track.  I will let you know the outcome, but I think I am going to go for the 8HP,  CHEERS.  ELVIS
    • Thanks Joshuaho96, yes - as someone else also suggested, the 8HP seems the 'smart choice' - HA - and ZERO to do with cost, but I am sure 8 speeds will be better than 6 speeds - HA - maybe.  I will purchase a new 8HP,  Thanks.  ELVIS.
    • Nobody said anything about getting a "...cheap Falcon box..."- it was JUST a question about a specific transmission.  And YOU may have a problem with not enough $ - HA - I do NOT - so please keep your comments like you are some financial guru to yourself.  BUT - much appreciated re the cost of a new 8HP and I twill probably be the way I go.  Thanks.  ELVIS.
    • Most people I know in the BMW world are swapping 6HPs for 8HPs. The 6HP has a big issue with one of the clutch drum bushings wearing out shockingly early which leads to them going into limp mode going into 5th/6th gear as the oil pressure loss from the worn bushing causes clutch slip. Even with the adaptations in shifting the TCU can't bump line pressure enough to keep the clutches from slipping and burning. I've personally looked at a 335d with 6HP28 with one owner and ~90k miles on it and the transmission adaptations were way out of spec and even though it nominally drove ok I'm confident it would have needed a full rebuild sooner than later. Other than that they're fine, but the 8HP doesn't really have weird issues like this to my knowledge and they're in everything these days so pulling them out of crashed cars isn't too hard.
    • There is an ABS pump and a few solenoids. You could trigger the front/rear solenoids with a pressure bleeder attached with a Consult 2.
