hey,

just a quicky  just wondering how much boost an rb20 turbo can hold safely, im running 12psi through mine but dont want to go anymore cause i have heard lots of stories of ceramic turbos shattering and getting sucked back into the combustion chamber.

should i maybe turn it back down to 10psi till i buy an rb25 turbo or can i leave it at 12 for a while????

Cheers

Matt

i have sitting next to me a peice of my friends r32 turbo compressor wheel which shot out through his exhaust.

He was running 15psi + flutter, did a couple of drag runs and bang pop.

I think safe boost level is 13-14psi although quite a few people run at 15psi.

Cheers

you can get away with running 14psi on the rb20's most of the time, but it's best to get it on the dyno if you do to see if it's running lean.

yeah i haven't put my dump pipe on yet so i might wait till i put it on before i turn it up anymore i also want to get a dyno test done but i think ill wait till the next dyno day

I'm running 14-15psi but my engine and turbo are low km's. Does it fine, no probs at all. One of my mates has also run his for over a yr at 14-15psi no probs. Wow, even if a turbo lets go after 2 years thats a huge total cost of like $80 a year for a lot more fun. 11-12 is safe as (If it lets go ure turbo is average anyhow) but i'd run 14psi and no be a b!tch.

Cheers

i'm running 12.5 and havn't had any problems. i hear 12 is safe and 14 is pushing the limit but this is just heresay. i guess it also depends on your driving style, how you maintain your car, and how many km the turbo has done. just make sure you give it enough time to cool down after a hard run and keep it out of high boost in the heat.

I'm just going to add my bit to the above - which are all good opinions. However, I can see you really want a definitive answer. So:

It actually comes down to each car. Now you ask what part? Well, its the whole thing, including the driver!!!!!!! I've developed a simplified formula for you:

The second page got beer spilt on it so I decided just to skip to the last equation:

RB20DET ~ 10-15psi.

Hope it helped :laughing-smiley-014:

dude if your gonna upgrade then I would go a 2530 or 2510...maybe something from trust. The R33 turbo is an improvement over the RB20 as it has a larger wastegate..but its still ceramic...I had a 2510 on my RB20 and it ran beautiful at 16 pounds..If you are gonna go to all the trouble of changing dump pipes then while you are there change all the water and oil lines with brand new ones. They are a nasty thing to change at the best of times, specially that water hose around the back of the engine, we had to drop the starter motor to get to that one...

when i got my 32 it was running stock boost, seemed fairly quick for the first few weeks as its my first turbo and wasnt used to the power change when it hit into boost. Got bored of it so had it dyno'd at hyperdrive to check a few things out and the guy asked me if i wanted to turn it up a bit, i said yes of course :P it is now running 13psi on the high boost setting and has been fine, mind you i only turn it up when i want to give it a bit of a boot. I also only have cat back exhaust and he said it should be fine as long as you dont boot it every day to work on the highway.

got a question of my own, im getting the dump pipe fitted soon and going for a bigger turbo, ive heard the rb25 runs well but want a bit more of an upgrade, any ideas of whats a good turbo upgrade to get?

cheers

I hammered my RB20 turbo at 14psi everyday, and again with the 25 turbo at 12psi. No problems whatsoever ;)

Then I got sick of no bottom end and having to give it 3k and drop the clutch to take a gap in traffic.. RB30 FTW!

The R33 turbo is an improvement over the RB20 as it has a larger wastegate..but its still ceramic...

lol where'd you get that idea from?

The wastegates are physically the same size.

    • Okay. Final round of testing done. Got a friend to hook up a fancy scanner to the car and we also ran some compression and leakdown tests, she is healthy.  The MAF was definitely the culprit. So for future reference anyone with similar issues that find this thread. I suggest the following steps, in order of affordability:   Check your spark plugs for any fouling, replace plugs if they are bad or re adjust the gaps making it narrower (0.8mm would be good). Check every coil's resistance with a multimeter. It can be done by probing the IB and G pins on the coil pack. Resistance should be around 1.4 (+/- 0.1) Ohms Check the MAF. If you have Nissan connect or a good scanner with the 14 adapter it should allow you to see the voltage on the MAF reading should be around 1.1 - 1.2V when car is idling. But if you don't, buy a new MAF from Amazon and test, then return it. (For instance, I got a Chinese one for $40 that was reporting 1.3v on idle). If you still have scanner, you can run tests on the injectors to see if they are working, just remember to unplug the fuel pump fuse/relay and have no pressure on the line. Then listen for the noises that the injectors make. Clean/replace injectors as needed. Once you find the issue and fix, order thousands of dollars worth of OEM parts to refresh unrelated things (Optional)   PS: Thanks to the absolute legends of this forum for the responses and help to someone that went a bit over their head. • Ha ha ha, so they stopped the bearings spinning on the one you want, but then decided the crank hub should slip instead 😛   Stick to RB, at least you can work on it yourself. And now it doesn't smell of vapour   Also I still believe there's a chance your new flap doesn't "pop", as even though the engine might breath hard, it has a direct path with no restriction to the inlet, which when on boost should pull a bit of suction for you. If you do get pressure in the catch can id be very intrigued. Time to put a boost gauge on it, and a session at the track, then solid cover your vent and do another session
    • Oh nah, S55 doesn't eat bearings, just the crank hub slips lol.
    • When’s the tow ball on the 33 coming? 🙃
    • I welcome any basic question that can help haha. Yes it has 2 unis but the driveshaft is a one piece and the unis are welded without a slip yoke at each end.   What's funny is anytime I've ever had wheel vibrations it's always been in the front so I automatically assume it will lead to steering wheel shake and not chassis vibration. With that being said, I never considered looking at my rear wheel balance... I have doubts though as this wasn't an issue before I pulled the motor and trans but is still very much worth a look. I'll do that tonight after work. Thanks.
