hey all,

I need to find out what the CAM's rules say about roll cage pipe thickness and classification when using chromoly pipe. I've got the code of practice & ANDRA rule book but i dont have a CAM's book, so anyone who can swing me the details i'd greatly appreciate it!

cheers

Shane

P.S didnt know exactly where to post this, so mods move it if need be :)

yeah i heard that too.

well main reason i wanted to know the pipe specs, is so i can build the cage using the correct pipe to suit, but seeing as i'm going drag racing for now, when i'm over that i can get it 'approved' to the cam's specs, depends how many hurdles i gotta jump through

my fabricator is going to love me if i decide to go with something like this...:D

I'll tell you right now, that that cage would not get passed under the CAMS rules, in either CDW or CrMo materials. The design is wrong in a number of key areas, such as diagonal bracing in the main hoop, the double box design of the roof structure and the lack of "A" pillar triangulation.

cams dont allow for double hoops?

also i cant allow for triangulation of the a pillar due to the car still being street registered (restriction of drivers sight blah blah blah)

it'd be easy enough to add in the extra bar to make the x in the main hoop

any others with ideas/advice dont be shy to let me know ur thoughts!

the only thing wrong with that drawing is the rear stays not attaching to the main hoop - so effectively you can't have that second roof section. it really doesn't do anything except add weight anyway.

you don't need to triangulate the A pillar, and the X bracing can be in the main hoop or the rear stays.

although if you're making it in cromemoly, you can have any design you want as long as it passes the engineer's tests/calculations. the drawings in the CAMS manual for cage members only applies to CDW or CDS tube cages.

thanks for that harry :P

well i've gone through all the CAMs regs and this is what i think i'll be going for. i've just gotta cross check it against the ANDRA book when i get home.

My only advise is if you are going to be looking to get it approved by CAMS and the car log booked then talk to them before, and during cage construction. Could save you a small fortune. Also, building a cage this late in the year could nmean you get caught out by the new rules comign in next year. A friend just got in to a sh1t fight with CAMS over the elegibility of his cage because the delay in gettign the car sorted means the cage will not comply with next years cage requirements...but thing is, it only has to comply with this years...but i have heard there is already a trend of looking forward annd requesting cages comply with the next years requirements.

This was for a tarmac rally car so may not be applicable to what you are looking to do

well then, cams can go shove it lol

y would they change cage rules year after year? seems awefully silly to me

i'll have a chat with them then, sigh why cant anything be nice and straight forward? :P

It really depends on what you are doing with your car. There are often subtle changes because of findings/improvements from accidents the year before. Typically those changes are specific to requirements for a class of racing/competition, some of the most stringent categories is tarmac rally, (Targa Tas type events)

By wanting a 6 point chrome moly cage you may find that you have unintentionally pooled yourself with these type of competitors so in order to keep the engineerign costs sane you have to run with already designed cages for the higher class of competition. If you want it out of steel, its for a road only car doing club motorsport and you dont paln on getting the car log booked then it is much easier

    • I've got a 2011 J50 that I imported six years ago. The unmodified factory AV system date and time has always been correct ( Japanese timezone of course ) up until last month. About two weeks ago, at engine start, the system wished me a happy new year ( in Japanese of course ). I can't think of anything that would make the system think that the date had changed, unless the GPS component has failed/reset somehow ? I checked the GPS reception in the system settings, and it can still see the satellites. Has any other J50 owner had this happen ?  It's no biggie, just annoying that it tells me the wrong date anytime I start the engine. 😅
    • Love following your adventures on IG, hopefully if you're still around in Japan when we visit again wouldn't mind going for a few beers with you (that's if you're keen on hearing how I hate Nissans).
    • ok so if i wanted to go 18's i would go for 8's  in front 30+ or 32+ off set at front and the back 9 would be ok? what offset should i aim for.. then can i do some  hunting for wheel rim choices..    If i get this - will this fit all around: Size: 18 x 8.5 +37 - n what tyres size tyre should i get for front n back?
    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
