planning a trip 15 months in advance is not only silly, it will be near impossible. it's unlikely an airline will sell you a ticket that early, nor will any hotel give you a price as a lot can change in 15months. also of course they haven't set the date for TAS 09 since they haven't even held TAS 08 yet. I would say 8 weeks is plenty of time to plan a japan trip. wait until this time next year, then go for it!

TAS 2009 dates wont be announced till well after TAS 2008.

You can't book a Japanese hotel until about 4-5months in advance except in special circumstances.

About the only thing you can do is start doing research about what else you want to see and do when you get there. And start saving those pennies.

You could book flights but that would be kinda dumb as the airlines will come up with specials between now and 8-12 months from now when most people are booking.

thanks guys, i realise that its a long way out, and i also realise that it is impossible to book this far out, however as Sewid said i am doing research. i have no idea what flights and accom etc cost nor do i have any idea what else to see over there specially during winter so ive got no idea how much im gonna need. So thats why im looking this far out so that i can make the most of my meger paycheck in the intrem.

well for 2 weeks I would say more like:

flights $1800

accom $2500

travel insurance free if you pay with credit card or about $100 or so I guess

spending money $3000 is ok, but if you want to be able to do and buy whatever you want make it $5000

My flights were $1080 through Jetstar.

My accom was $1432 staying in Osaka and Tokyo.Ill still be adding to the $3000 spending money i have now so it will probably hit $5000 before i leave.

Looks like im up for a good trip :(

Flights may be $1080 thru Jetstar but as soon as you add the Shinkansen to Tokyo you add $300 on top. If you just want to go to Osaka Jetstar can't be beat. Of course you can get a JR Pass and use that for the shinkansen so you gotta factor all that in your research.

My TAS2008 flight is $2021 JAL direct Sydney -> Narita. I paid a lot to be fully flexible, direct, on one of the most popular days and be the best flight time (JL772).

As a comparison, Jetstar for the same day was $1800 all up including meals, entertainment (I know if I didnt pre-buy all that I would have bought it on the plane cause i like that stuff) and shinkansen to Tokyo. Add on top of that all the farting around with baggage and trains and I decided no thanks and paid the extra $200.

As for research on Japan try these links:

English Japan rail trip planner site: http://www.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgi

This site has every rail timetable, govt bus timetable, domestic airline timetable, fare cost schedule programmed in and will tell you to the minute how to get from one place to another.

Japan Rail Pass Site: http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en001.html

English site on the JR pass, costs, conditions, etc.

Kakaku.com http://www.kakaku.com/

Best site for finding street prices for electronics in Japan. It's in Japanese though. Learn katakana and it's not too hard to navigate.

Jalan.net http://www.jalan.net/

Best site for booking hotels in Japan for the Japanese domestic tourism market. I get consistently better prices here than anywhere else on the net. Usually you do not have to pay in advance for Jalan bookings either. Again it's all in Japanese but if you mess with the site enough you can find out what to click by trial and error.

don't forget if you do go the cheap option and fly deathstar to osaka you can't use any JR pass on either the nozomi or hikari shinkansen (the two fast direct ones).

and yep I've done the tokyo-osaka return trip and it's about $320 as sewid said, more if you want nice seats in the green car.

I e-mailed the Tokyo Auto Salon Association back in March this year for dates for Jan '08. They advised the dates were finalised and published online around July.

Sure enough they were right on the money. So You're going to have to wait until around July next year for TAS '09 dates.

    • Hi all. Been a while but things are moving along. I just have something that I am wondering about. Since I will use OEM turbo oil pumbing, I got myself a new bolt, the one that goes into the engine block oil feed. As I recall (and see visually) this bolt comes restricted with I think a 1.7mm hole? Not quite sure but it was something around that size. The turbos have 1mm restrictor bolts installed, as necessary due to ball bearings and my higher oil pressures. Can I now just use that OEM bolt with the 1.7mm hole in for the engine block or will this actually be too much oil flow restriction and I have to drill it out first? In my head it would make sense for the bolt to be at least 2mm wide as both turbos take "1mm of oil flow". Do let me know if my logic is flawed here, I just want to make sure I don't kill my turbo bearings with too little oil. Don't know if I can trust the saying I read somewhere that ball bearing turbos essentially only need an oil mist
    • There are several aftermarket options available, from not-too-painful moneyhttps://justjap.com/collections/driveshafts-bearings/products/d-max-reinforced-replacement-rear-driveshaft-set-fits-nissan-s13-s14-s15-r32-r33-r34-c35 and  https://justjap.com/products/crank-motorsport-billet-rear-axles-fits-nissan-skyline-r33-gts-t-r34-gt-t?srsltid=AfmBOorQk4xkGUa98kO7v2ePLUiNt-HRrM2AwWNw9mbSIVE1ujBVwY__, all the way up to The Driveshaft Shop https://driveshaftshop.com/skyline-cv-axles/
    • Yeah based on old XRC5964S specs, it looks to be roughly GTX3576R sized? But this 5964S compressor will flow 90lb airflow somewhat similar to the compressors in both the GTX3584RS or G35-1050.. I fully expected the 0.64 rear A/R to choke up top - seems way too small from typical convention - but these are seemingly beneficial over the prior 0.82 results.. Be interesting to see if he comments on the EFR question in that thread - he mentioned in a prior video that BW EFR's were the "cats pajamas 10 years ago", but by the sounds of things all his kits have been using Xona for quite a while now.
    • Yeah it’s still got the oem manual gearbox and clutch, only kinda mods are a blow off valve, coil overs, and a aftermarket intercooler. Also had it for about 2 months now with a lovely midnight purple paint on it.
    • Yeeeppp, been following a lot of the testing on the latest Xona stuff and there are some mental results.  He also went over 1000hp @ 4 hubs on his Mainline with a XRE6364S (63mm) which was also well into the 20psi range before 4000rpm on a 2.5. Crazy stuff. Fwiw the XRE5964S is basically the modern equivalent of their old HTA3582 - would drive nicely enough on an RB25 or 26, but proven capable of a huge amount of power if you want to spicy with rpm tho even at sane boost levels will make stout numbers
