When I got my R33, it came with a heap of std bits and peices [which I sold off].

One of the boxes was for a Nismo Selective LSD Part No. 38420-RS200 [i kept the box].

1. What I want to know, is this a 1.5 or 2 way diff centre? [What I read on the www was some Nismo units could be either depending on how you set them up].

2. Is it a mechanical diff?

3. How tough is it?

All I know is that it hasn't broken yet, it loads up both wheels every time [corners and acceleration], it clunks and skips in corners, and when you have it on the hoist and spin the back wheels, they both rotate in the same direction.

If anyone can info me up or give me a link I'd appreciate it. I basically want to know what I have.

Could only find 2 references to this part # 38420-RS200 and also 38420-RS201 (in japanese) , mentions it is a selective model, no mention of 1.5 or 2, looks like they were available in both.

Also have a read of this

Looks like it is an old short lived model, perhaps a Nissan dealer could look up the part # or someone with an old Nismo catalogue.

Yeah, what I found was that you could do something to it and make it a 1.5 or a 2. From what I understand, you could do this any time you wanted [as long as you have a hoist and spare couple of hours]. But it didn't say what it was you did, maybe reversed a plate or something - not that important anyway, cos I'm happy with it as it is, so I'll leave it.

Thanks for the links. I'll go have a read now.

The nismo diff you have is basically just an uprated factory GTR type LSD. It should be fairly smooth operating; light throttle it won't lock/clunk and skip. I.e roundabouts car parks etc. They are THE best street LSD in my opinion as they are so smooth and streetable. ;)

You can buy the upgrade clutch packs from Nismo and slap them in the GTR diff. I believe Nengun also sell these.

They are super smooth on light/cruise throttle; give it just that little bit more throttle and it will lock nicely and send a little shudder/skip feel through the car. So really easy to drive around police.

If it clunks/chatter at light throttle change the oil and or push an lsd additive in to it as they are not supposed too.

I remember a while back redline wasn't that crash hot in CLSD's as they clunked. I think I read that here and on a Ford forum. Great for gearbox's not that crash hot for diffs.

The Castrol full synth oil SAF-XA is good and already has the LSD friction modifier in it.

I believe the Redline doesn't have the friction modifier in it and requires redlines additive for the operation to be smooth.

So possibly just add some of redlines friction modifier. Or head down to ford and see if they still stock the ford additive. :)

Just don't add too much; slowly increase the dose.

Thanks Cubes, I'll get it hot and change the oil, probably due anyway. I guess Bumblebee was right as well.

But, it did it from when I brought it, so the oil in it from japan was no good either? And it doesn't chatter too much, but you can feel it.

As I said, I'm happy with it, it locks up and drives great when needed. It also helps in a strange way when you power on through corners etc, makes the car feel very predictable.

    • I have to agree like, yesterday, I was driving down the warringah freeway towards the bridge when this jackass driving a beaten up Honda civic cut me off so suddenly it made me almost yank the wheel to avoid him hitting my car. Honestly and he had the NERVE to flip me off (or some other gesture Idk). Im a calm guy, but really some people just dont deserve to have a license, let alone be allowed to drive on densely populated roads/highways. If youre gonna cut through lanes at least use the damn turn signal
    • HPA do an interesting video on tuning, and Adrian shows on the dyno, moving from 10:1 to 12:1 (And I think even 13:1) and the power moves SFA. However, a couple of degrees of timing has a HUGE impact. Exhaust side of things will more be the length of the exhaust and how many bends and turns you have. The straighter you can keep it, the better. By a lot. Oh, and getting the diameter right. Bigger isn't always better. Going to big can actually lose you power.
    • I have to say, most people I see on the road fit the bill of atrocious drivers. Whether they be cowboys in their dual cabs, bogans in the Commodores, or the soccer mums. Pretty much most people on the road put zero freaking thought into driving. Barely look further up the road then the end of their bonnet, and have never even thought about how catastrophically wrong shit can go, by doing what they all deem as normal driving. Especially their late braking, racing to stopped lights, and sitting half a foot off the bumper of the car in front at 110km/h. Wanna know what's even better? By the time their kids get to be old enough to learn to drive, they've already got in the back of their brain what is normal driving, how annoyed you're allowed to get at people etc, and then their parents who actually have zero freaking skill at driving (Even though they constantly say "I've been driving for 20 years and never had an accident!") teach the little twerps how to drive, or should I say, how to make a car move. Literally watched a parent teach their L Plater, on a 4 lane freeway, that you just slam the brakes on, and push your way over, even with a B Double bearing down on you, and that's how you should drive, rather then, just keep going to the next exit. Same shit happens all the time for side streets etc, watching numpties pull dumb shit turns pushing across 3 lanes of traffic, rather than just go up the road another 30 seconds, and take the next turn that'll get you to the same location... Oh, and the damn right lane bandits. Or the retards driving along with their headphones in, and can't hear the ambulance or fire truck right up their ass about to run them over...   Pretty much, people drive on the road, like ego centric f**ks, and don't actually think how dumb shit their driving is, how it could easily kill them or someone else in a split second, or at the very least, how they're driving is contributing to all the shit they're bitching about on the road, like shitty congestion!
