hey guys,

just a question. i got a mate who seems to think a t28 ballbearing would be wickered on an rb20, as the turbo is heaps responsive. has anyone done this? i would be running std ecu + fuel cut defender, std injectors, full exhaust, front mount, fuel pressure reg.

would it be worth it? i got a r33 gcg highflow atm...and im wondering what difference i would see. my mate reckons boost coming on like 1000rpm earlier and coming on a shit load harder. but i dunnoo....

your top end power wouldn't be anything special, would be very responsive too small for a rb20 stick with what you got if you want to build more power in the :worship: future

off what motor?

S14/S15 SR20 motor?

If so, they are not Ball bearing (except only "SOME" of the S15 ones.

GTiR SR20 is not a Ball bearing.

Garrett GT28 of some sort? which one?

A stock RB20 and RB25 turbo is "similar sized" turbo to a T28.

it's just in a T3 housing.

If you have a GCG R33 hiflow turbo on your RB20, you already have a ball bearing turbo.

and it has steel wheels.

and is capable of a lazy 220rwkw with "decent" response without too much lag.

A stock RB25 turbo will be more responsive but only make a max of about 200rwkw if you find a dyno in a good mood.

Well...the idea on its own is not a bad one...if you're after 180-200rwkw reliably then a t28 off a s15 would not be a bad idea...although it would take some custom work to get it on due to the different flange and alignment of the housings...it will probably make the same power as a rb25 turbo on a rb20...plus side over the rb25 turbo is that you can run up to about 16psi reliably and not spit the exhaust wheel out...

You have mentioned you have a gcg highflow on your car...in this case then...the t28 will be a stepdown in terms of peak power but you'll gain some response...although...no matter how small you turbo is the rb20 is still far from responsive...for the money involved in getting a t28 on...i'd get a remap for your car and bump the boost up (16-18psi) so that when you do get on boost it makes it worthwhile...

your problem is your running a stock ECU tune with a large turbo.....

get a remap, tune to suit the turbo, and you'll find it will be a much more responsive package and make more power. Piss of the fuel cut defender alonng with the fuel pressure reg.

well, if you have a RB20 then your options are limited unless you get a RB26 Powerfc, and adapter loom and tune with that. Its very possible, and there are plenty of people that can do it (including me)

Either that or get a RB20 re-map.

Personally, I'd go the Powerfc and loom, and you have much more tuning flexibility (not many people can do RB20 remaps, and its a pain in the ass).

There is a thread where Myself, Cubes, and Paulr33 got the RB26 GTR ECU working 150% with the RB20 and RB25.

ah i see. so its the rb26 pfc and the loom. is the loom a plug and play kind of thing or does it have to be rewired? where do i get the loom from?

would i notice that much of a gain with a pfc? if so...what kind really?

The PFC is not your only choice...for a mildly modded rb20 like yours...my choice would be a remap...it narrows your choice of tuners but honestly...how many times do you need to tune the car? Then there are heaps of other options around as well...have a search...it will shed some light on this for you...

As for gains...any sort of aftermarket ecu or piggyback will give some very noticeable gains...as long as the tuner knows what he's doing...

Long story short , the turbine or exhaust housing housing is the hard part to get when you want to hang a GT28BB based turbo off an RB20/25 . Garrett originally intended GT28 turbos to use the T28 flange and don't make a GT28 exhaust housing with the T3 flange that you need .

When HKS decided to use Garrett cartridges (centre section and wheels) they had to have model specific exhaust housings made so that the turbo could bolt up to the std manifold and dump pipe . The one they use on their RB20/25 specific GT2530 and GT-RS etc is probably the one to use if you can find one from a dead HKS turbo .

The alternatives are the ones sold by GCG and one of the turbo mobs in I think Victoria though they are possibly more aimed at RB25's - larger A/R ratio may not be so hot on a 2L six .

At least one person here has had a Nissan/Hitachi exhaust housing reprofiled to suit a GT28BB based turbo so that may suit your means . Personally I think the HKS housing would be the best way to go but thats your call .

    • After using a protractor for an actually accurate assessment of what is required,  and by NOT using my uncalibrated eyeball I worked out I need a 25° silicone bend from the TB ro the MAF, but, my choice was either a 30° or a 23° (23° is a weird spec), so I grabbed the 23° one from Raceworks I also grabbed 1mtr of 3" straight from Just Jap, I needed 350mm, but they only had 300mm, or 1mtr lengths....meh Also ordered a 1/2" hose bulkhead fitting from fleabay, this has a smoothish mushroom looking head (they are designed for below the water line of boats) that will fit inside the bend, the hose bit and threaded bit looks to long, but nothing that a hacksaw cannot fix if required, the hose will then just get jamed on the threaded bit up to the retaining nut Fingers crossed and the unsightly amount of hose clamps will be reduced down to 4 once all the parts arrive 
    • Oil change does not trigger code 21. Code 21 is for coilpacks primary side connection. You can try to clear the code with a battery disconnect, hold down the brake pedal to drain capacitors through the brake lights with the ignition on for 10-15 seconds before you reconnect the battery. I have seen R35 coil conversion permanently cause this code with no ill effects so it might be the resistance it wants to see isn't quite right on one or more coilpacks. Could be inside the ECU, could be the harness, could be a coil. You can test it all if you want or just ignore until the car actually starts misfiring.
    • I forgot you have a Nistune ECU. Use Nistune to do all the tests I mentioned instead of faffing with 30+ year old electrical connectors. You can read MAF volts off that too, there are reference values in the service manual to tell you roughly what it should be in different conditions.
    • No. I think it might be the AFM. Hence the use of the terms "swaptronics", which implies the use of swapping out electronics for the purpose of diagnosis. It's about the only way to prove that a small/niggling/whatever problem with an AFM or a CAS or similar is actually caused by that AFM/CAS/whatever. A known good item swapped in that still gives the same problem is likely to be caused somewhere else. They're all the same. Spraying AFMs with cleaner is an each way bet between cleaning it and f**king it.
    • Oh wow! This might actually work amazingly. Do you know the ratio of the diff? I was told the only thing you need to make sure of is if the front & rear diff ratios are the same. Ours is a 4.083 Thanks!
