Hey everyone. What would be a good daily for $15k (max) that's not a pig on fuel?

I'm not interested in turbo, super charged or V8's. I'm not sure what the fuel economy is like on Falcons and Commodores around that price range.

Ultimately I'm looking for something that is reliable, isn't too underpowered and not a hatch or girly car. I could be interested in a ute aswell. Any suggestions?

Dedicated gas falcon, BA Mk 2 will fit the budget easily. Fuel bill of a 4 cylinder with the room of a large family sedan. I have had my dedicated gas ute for 5 years and get upto 550kms to tank for around $40 dollars and that just an au, the ba's are much more effcient geting around 650-700 highway kms to a tank for the same $40 mark. Cheap parts, easy servicing, comfortable and great economy.

if your looking for a daily then i would personally go for a 4 banger......and if you still want an import as your daily then any NA import would be good on fuel......apparently commodore and falcons are okish in the fuel economy.....but if your getting a big sedan then also think of the toyota's as they are awesome on fuel economy and being a toyota they never break down.....

i run a 93 nova sedan

cost me 1300 with 150kms on it, insured it and they said its worth 4k or so. Anyone that wants to hit me bring it on, oh and when it hails and everyone runs out to their cars i just sit back and laugh. priceless

note, cost was less than a set of tyres for the skyz :D

Gas is economical, but absolute shi-te when you're on the open road/ freeway/ steep hill.

MY R32 GTS-4 uses less fuel than my olds BA XR6, and my car is turbocharged.

Personally, for $15k, I'd be looking at a magna, camry or similiar, but if you're on the skyline forum, you'll always hear a recommendation for an R32. with the old reliable RB20, you won't be using a LOT of fuel unless you hit the go fast pedal frequently. The GTS-4 and GTS-t are turbocharged, but if you want more economy, there are quite a few R32 GTS models, even in 4 door.

I have driven a dedicated gas car for 5 years and never experienced the problems in any of the situations you speak of and my ute is heavily loaded on a regular basis. I am speaking for dedicated gas not dual fuel, there is a significant difference in performance and economy over a dual fuel car.

6 cylinder BMW 3 series (e36/91-98).

Easy on fuel, not as expensive as people say to fix.

For 15k you'd get a nice one with service history, leather, sunroof, climate control, CD stacker and power everything.

Slip some 18s on it and your away.

I'd stay away from an NA import for a daily driver.. even if they are decent on fuel, insurance and parts required are usually more expensive than Australian vehicles. $15k is a pretty high budget for a daily driver.. If I were you I'd be looking at spending $2-3k on a car and putting the rest towards a house or something. Daily driver's are usually just that, a car to get you from A to B so you can save the Skyline for the weekends etc.

man i got a 98 VT factory supercharged for sale, its fairly quick when you need it but not a pig on fuel, its only got 111k on the clockm got tow bar and everything. its on car sales for 14990 but im pretty neg on that ill see if i can find the link. also has pioneer dvd player and stuff.

toyota = are expensive, but extremly high quality and will last for ever, Echo great daily 4 around 15k

holden = VY and above, VZ comes with alloytec engine... cant go wrong with cheap parts and plenty of room, if it has a tow bar you can tow shit, cheap insurance and everything else, if its on gas its even better....

ford = Ba as above, deidicated gas cant go wrong... jus have a few interoir rattles and the diffs blow up...

mitsubishi magna = are great value for money, however quality is comprimised and if u blow the auto up it costs heaps :(

    • Nah, nothing formal, just open track days. Mostly small and tight circuits but I would like to get back out to Eastern Creek at some stage.
    • What type of track driving will you be doing?  Do you have a set of class rules you need to abide by that will limit your rim / tyre width?
    • I've been reading a lot lately about unsprung weight and how beneficial it can be to reduce it for driving on the track, given my semi's only have another day or two in them I am throwing around the idea of some lighter wheels and a square set up. I have 265/35/19's and 245/40(?)/19 Federal 595's at the moment. The wheels and tyres are super heavy. I looked up my wheel weight online and got 14.5kg naked. Not sure if this was 8.5 (front) or 9 (rear) but that's a lot. I have also been reading about the benefits of a square setup. Much better rotation and potentially less understeer.  When I throw these together I'm thinking about a 17x9 or 18x9 square (preferably under 10kgs per wheel) with 245 or 255's. I can get some cheap 17x8.5 BMW M Sport wheels, they weight 10.5 kg's each but at 8.5 wide could probably only get 245's on them? I know they come with 255's from factory but semi's are a bit chunkier. Otherwise it will be aftermarket wheels in a 9" width. Most of the other BMW wheels are heavy unless you pay a squillion dollars for some M wheels.  Although, the E46 M3 Style 67's could be good but I'd have to buy 2 sets to square them up.  My car has a tickle over 400hp and about to put an LSD in also, is 245 a little thin for a square setup? It kinda feels that way to me. Also, is there any tangible benefit to having 18's over 17's? Is the footprint demonstrably bigger? From those of you who went to light(er) wheels after heavy buggers, did you notice it much?
    • Start with the R32 GTR wiring diagram. The ECU is essentially the same, so the pinouts are good. The details around ECCS relays, etc might differ a little bit, but the reality is that you need to get ignition power to kick the ECU so it powers up the ECCS relay which brings the rest of the ECU up. This also gives power to the other circuits that are needed to make the engine run, like the ignition coils, etc. All of this is visible on the R32 diagram and should give you a strong guide, even if it's not quite the same as the R33. As to specifics - I'm pretty sure no-one can help you from afar, as there is no way to know what mistake or omission has been made in connecting stuff up. It always turns out to be "LOL, I shorted something and an entire wire vanished out of the loom", or "We never connected X or Y main connector", or "shit, you mean I need to have that fuse installed?".
    • hello wanted some insight on what my problem could be so i swapped a RB26DETT into my r33 gtst used a R33 GTR engine harness and im using a haltech platinum pro. The car cranks but no start the ecu isn’t getting any power now im trying to find out why i cant seem to find any schematics  or diagram for the engine harness for the r33 gtr anything helps thank you.
