Heya all,

my boost controller goes on holidays at random intervals and quite often I'm overboosting up to 1.8bar

booted it on the freeway in 4th today to overtake a truck and it over boosted from the time it took to get from 100ks to 160ks, which wasnt that long I spose...

I keep fiddling with the controller, its a GReedy prospec B (analogue) dual stage EBC

while it has been dialed in at .9-1bar it always seems to fluctuate, sometimes working perfectly sometimes overboosting like a mofo.

how long before an exaust turbine falls off?

How long is a piece of string?

There is no clear-cut answer to a question like that dude.

No-one knows.

thought that might be the case..

I have been advised that its not so much of a problem in lower gears because your always changing and they dont get a great deal of time spinning at those higher rpm's, but was told to beware gunning it on the freeway if its overboosting as it will die pretty fast..

was kinda interested as to just how terminal boosting stock GTR turbs past 1.2 bar or so realy is (ie, do they die realy fast?)

well how it was explained to me (and I cant recall the exact rpm's) was that the stock turbo's spin at like 100 - 170k rpms and then you enter the danger area of 200k+ rpm at over 1bar, I was also told that after 1bar the small stock turbines turbo's will spin an extra 50k rpm or so for every .2bar making upping things a real stain on the relitivly weak ceramic exaust wheel.

does this sound right, or was I fed a heap of bullsh!t?

I had one go at 12psi, it hurt the rings on piston 3 too.

Leave them the hell alone, sure there are people who punt about with 14 psi but, there are lots of people who did that and had to rebuild an Rb26 (not a cheap experience).

Consider low boost a cost saving measure so you can save for replacement GT-SS/N1/'insert steel wheel turbo type here'

or just set your boost controller properly??????

And by that you mean using the stock one at factory boost, right?

My boost control was as good as you get.

14psi on stock 'old' ceramic GTR turbos = gambling with your motor.

I seem to recall this sort of thread coming up in the distant past with a large number of examples of turbo failure experience poping up in it.

My stock turbos were ran at 14.7psi all day everyday and it has slightly lesss than 100 000k's on it. When i recently changed the turbos over a couple weeks ago they were still in great nick. I've heard of people blowing them as soon as they run 1 bar and others that they never go at 1bar. It's just luck of the draw i guess.

so your saying you ran 100,000kms on 1 bar?

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?
    • Cats are called Bella, and Donna...  Like that poisonous plant And I remember your 2 monsters, I remember making a little bit of wee when you let them out... LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
