I'm very close to having my hks gt-ss turbs put on my 32r an aiming for about 300 - 320kw atw.. I've got all the supporting mods ready to go on at the same time but i'm not sure if i need a boost controller?? Most reputable workshops say i do but one workshop (one of the best) says he just whined up the actuators and modifies the standard boost controller.

I want the power to come on nice and strong and i know a good ebc can hold the wastegate shut etc for quicker spool times, but will it make any difference with these particular turbos say running 20psi?

Also will i have trouble with boost spiking using the standard controller at this boost level??

I don't want to have any issues with the car and if i can save myself $350 - 400 for the same result, then i'll definately go that way..

dont skimp on money now!!! buy your boost control

That's not what i was asking race_snooze.

I was asking if i NEED an aftermarket boost controller AND is it safe to use the modified stock boost controller with correctly setup actuators?? Anyone with experience??

If you're going to run 20psi through it, and you're not willing to pay $400 to make sure its safe, ask yourself what you'd do if it DOES spike and you lose either the engine or turbo or both...

I've got another suggestion, at the very minimum go onto ebay and buy a turbotech boost controller. They're recommended by many on these forums and work different to the stock solenoid or bleed valves. Not sure what R32's have stock, but these manual boost controllers are only ~$40 incl postage and they work fantastic. You get the quicker spool up the same as with an ebc because the wastegate sees no pressure at all until the limit set by the manual controller. Rather than bleed pressure off like a bleed valve, it actually restricts pressure to the wastegate and is very reliable.

I'd recommend running a good ebc at those boost levels but thats your call.

LOL.. I'm not trying to be a tight arse, i just thought that if i can use the stock one safely, i would & save some $$, but thanks for the info anyway :nyaanyaa:

With GT-SS - you might need one. Only because they are small and you need every bit of help to keep the gate shut and avoid creep in upper RPM/high boost.

Im running around on 1bar ATM just off the actuator, yet to see if i'll need one but ive been told for 18psi probably ok. Much more if i wanna hold the boost in the upper RPM its likely i will need to purchase for 20+psi

I ran 24psi with ext gate and no controller - never had spike issues (bleeding upto 8psi) on my old setup :nyaanyaa:

Its all about if the person knows what they are doing.

I've never had a EBC on my cars in 5 years :worship:

Im running a turboxs ball/spring boost controller (basically same as hte turbotech one) that came fitted with my mildy modded 32gtr. I was going to get a ebc, but figured i'll be spending $$$ just to adjust boost to and from its peak. This controller builds boost just over 2000, comes on hard & holds it very well to redline. The standard solenoid is still in place and working. The turboxs item has been installed by a workshop just above the turbos.

Well ur a gurl Ash, who didn't watch enough Voltron ... hahah jk bruv

Like Ash says, if your bleeding a small amount from nominal gate pressure, ur ok with Turbotech etc.

Its really only the upper echelon of rice and self richoness that you'd want a EBC to bleed more then 1bar.

Sup to you man, if i was you, id run a $40 manual bleeder. When you start wanting more max target booost then actuator... or if you want more controll over boost rise.. go EBC.

Each to their own I suppose. I personally would have a boost controller. sure u can stiffen up the wastegate spring to run higher boost but wouldnt it be easier to have a boost controller for ease of boost adjustment?

^^ Quieten down, my old boss f_cked him mother often, though NEVER was careless enough to drop boost.

100's maybe 1000's of people don't experience what you have. Grind it out and figure out why your setup with a TT isn't working.

Ultimately i think a EBC is the way to go, but using a manual bleed / TurboTech is still completely fine. With the price of one, do it, at the very least it will give you a good feel of what a EBC actually does when setup correctly.

$$ for results, you cant beet a good bleed / Turbotech style device.

    • Thanks, will do that.  Thankfully they still feel great.
    • Yeah man, absolutely. You can try pushing me all the way in swapping the R34 for an E9x M3
    • It's almost certainly going to be some amount of pads compound transfer onto the rotors. It will probably go away after you've run them for a bit. If not, pull it all out, lightly sand the rotors, scuff the pads, and rebed.
    • no one recommending speedtek gearsets?   i'm in the same boat as Cosline but rwd, I am holding boost back in third to 600nm at the hubs to save the gear as i make nearly 750nm at the hubs on a mainline
