hi everyone, just a newbe question. i am looking into buy a turbo skyline but im not sure if it is going to be worth the hassle of having a turbo. i hear they need to be rebuilt every 60,000 kms costing 2grand, aren't good and overheat on long trips (which i frequently do) and if they do blow up the stuff the whole engine! are these things true? has any 1 had major issues with their turbos, or is a matter if you look after it right everyting will be good? what is a good amount of kms to buy a 2nd hand gts-t?

Mate!! all these people telling you turbo's overheat, and blowup and arent reliable etc. dont know how to treat a car!!!

My R31 skyline was a bolt on turbo setup with nice size cooler, 10psi making 165rwkw, I tuned it backin 2003 I think and it did not miss a beat for a good 5 years untill I sold it!!!!

I drove that car in 40 degree heat with a full car load goin for cruises, to the beach etc. 40 mins drives at a time.

- it did not overheat!

- it did not blow up

- it was very relible!!

do your service every 5000k's, make sure your cooling system is working correctly and you shouldn't have any problems at all....

If you do donuts for 10 or so mins straight..... any engine will overheat!!!!

:bunny: with friends like these who needs enemies...

Best piece of advice anyone can give you is dont rush into buying the first car you see, get it checked out and spend sometime looking at EVERYTHING for yourself. If you are in over your head then get the help from a professional (mechanic or friend) and be prepared to spend a little money doing so.

My 2cents is id rather spend $100-200 on a car to find any minor/major problems first than take a punt and having it end up costing you $$$$$$$$$

when I bought my Skyline I knew the HKS turbo was on its way out so I got it a little cheaper.However that turbo lasted almost 2 yrs before the telltale waft of smoke while sitting at the lights.I had it fully rebuilt for just under a grand..ran beautiful...Just make sure oil changes are regular and you will have years of trouble free motoring.Dont believe all that crap that you have been told

My 33gtst has just ticked over the 100000 (and the rest :bunny: ) and is still on the stock turbo which has had 10 pounds of hard abuse shoved down her throat for 4 years. And i still havent blown... Wait, am i still even talking bout cars here?

My R34 GTT has:

Done the trip from Brisbane to Sydney in a day. No issues. Just spent a minute longer cooling down the engine before switching it off.

Plenty of >3hour trips.

Does 2 >1hour trips on a daily basis. Hasn't missed a beat.

Use decent oils and regular maintenance and these cars will out last most cars on the road.

Skyline's aren't a cheap car to run by any means.. Maintenance, insurance and running costs are all higher than normal every day cars. If cheap motoring is what you're after look elsewhere. Having said that, Skyline's will be reliable if you look after them as said previously.

The stuff that you've posted is an absolute load of crap. Maybe that sort of stuff is true if you are using your car for drags / track / drift events twice a week, lol.

Over-heating on long trips lol..

One thing people haven't mentioned here is that boost levels can effect the lifespan of the turbo. Standard ceramic wheeled GTR turbos (non R34 N1) shouldn't be boosted above 15psi or 1 Bar (although there are plenty of people who have and haven't had any problems... yet). I don't know about GTS-T turbos but I imagine they have a common boost break point as well.

i agree with this wholly. skylines are made to cop a belting and will ask for more. you just have to keep high maintenance.

make sure you keep everything under/at it's limits and the car with run fine under most if not all conditions and situations..

eg: if you've got a stock fuel system and bolt on a huge turbo without a tune, you will come across problems eventually. you have to mod everything in consideration. if you go for a long drive you should make sure your turbo cools down before switching the car off. this site is a huge resource for that sort of stuff!

as DRD-00F said, GTS-t's are safe at 12psi. make sure you have an aftermarket boost guage to monitor this.

I see what's happened here..

Your mates have obviously confused the word TURBO with the word ROTARY.

I beg to Differ.

My old Series 3 Rx7 had 230,000ks on the original motor....never missed a beat.

Even drove it from Melb to the Gold Coast In December and Ran beatifully :)

Look after any car and you wont have any worries with it.

Preventative mantinence. Making sure nothing can go wrong is a lot easier than fixing somthing when it does.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
