Ok - be nice - I have nfi about the rules etc - and this is just preliminary scratchings.

A mate of mine has just imported a plain old '89 R32 GTR and intends on race prepping it for, ultimately, entering targa tas for a bit of fun - and yes he has the cash and the need for speed to do it...

Now there are production and modified classes I believe...

I guess the question is - what is within the rules to prep it to sit in the production class?

We are hoping to be able to:

- Fix brakes - AP racing or similar I guess

- Power up - is changing over to N1 turbos within the rules or do you need to start off with an N1? Power FC / remaps?

- Oiling - larger sump / baffles, cooler and restrictors etc to keep pressure down?

- etc etc etc

Now there's probably a rule book that explains all this, but where is the fun in that

You can enter the car in N1 spec, that allowes you N1 turbos, and a N1 oil cooler, and other n1 bits.

The entire braking system is free, just has to fit under the wheels (n1 can run 17x8 std, or 17x9, 18x9 under the option rule).

all ecu's in the car are free, but all sensors must be standard (we run a pfc in our car).

You are allwed to put baffle's the sump, not sure about restrictors.

rule book is here:

GT-R falls under M2

http://www.cams.com.au/downloads/articles/...ions%202006.pdf

And here's the full regs for you.

Modern regs start on page 27.

We didn't put restictors in ours.... couldn't find a ruling, and found we didn't need them anyways.

I found it wasn't the obvious stuff, its all the little things that add up.

If you want to race an 89 gtr you have to be ready to change all of the wear items....

replace every bush front and rear

steering rack ends (front and rear as well)

radiator was clogged

diff needed a rebuild

tailshaft needed new centre bearing (wallet still hurts over that one....cost twice what a brand new 1 peice tailshaft would have).

freshen up engine (new bearings, rings, valve stem seals, exhaust valve guides, oil pump, water pump)

and you need to upgrade

oil cooler (thanks nissan :()

power steer cooler (likewise)

brake lines

calipers

discs

pads (all front and rear of course)

shocks

springs

turbos (well you could run standard but ceramic wheels + extra boost are a bad mix)

ecu

sump baffles (extended sump not allowed)

roll cage

seats

harnesses

extinguishers

tow hooks

terratrip and terraphone

wheels

semi slicks

buper vents for intercooler

brake ducts

silicon cooler pipes with big clamps that dont blow off.

catch can

oil restrictors, external oil return not sure of their legality - its not mentioned so probably not legal

Its brilliant fun, I loved it despite our challenges. Just don't go into it without enough budget it will just be frustrating

The way I read the rules, if you enter the car as an N1, it must have all genuine N1 parts, oil cooler etc....

Reading Duncan's list through is one reason Jason and I chose to build a 34 (The blue one). We originally did all the costings and figured to get a 32 up to a reliable spec and rebuild everything, the cost of a 34 with low klms was virtually the same.

Nonetheless, welcome aboard Paul  There's plenty of GTR gurus on this forum mate, lots of guys with real-world racing experience, and most are more than willing to help. Build the car strong so it gets through the six days of flogging, and you'll be hooked for life, I warn you now :P

Duly noted Ben!

I guess the clutch is an important one too - what have you all found has gone the distance?

Just a tough single plate will do the job without fuss (std flywheel must remain). If you're anything like us there'll be plenty of clutch stabbing out of slower corners to get the big girl moving

Thats the "tour". Non competetive, following a group leader, not exceeding 100 klm/h I think? You also don't do all the stages because you wouldn't have the time to complete them all at the slower pace.

BUT, you can use all the road. Give you a good taste for the full competition I'd say

I did the tour in 03, you can't go over the posted speed limit, and the tour leaders don't push real hard. It is litliray a tour round the state, I think the tour now goes to nice places to wine and dine for lunch now?

as my car was a pretty nice example and i decided to put a bolt in removable cage in it... we even reinstalled the whole interior without cutting trim.

the guy that bought my old car who lives in melbourne has now pulled that cage out and is selling it (asking $1500 neg).

it was one of the best bolt-ins i'd seen with welded diagonal and harness bar in centre hoop with solid side intrusion... might be something to consider... i think you would be frustrated driving a GTR in the tour.

    • Yeah well per the video it took 15s for the stock unit to start up....even if I give it a few seconds discount for starting that is at least 12 sec before you get a reverse camera if you are trying to leave a park.  The android unit is way faster, but 2016 for the stock unit is a long time ago in consumer electronics
    • Yea that’s why I said ima test them with multimeter and see the reads.
    • Only at idle. Isn’t a problem when rev it seems.
    • @Haggerty This seems silly to ask, but are you confident in your ability to tune the Haltech?
    • Next on the to-do list was an oil and filter change. Nothing exciting to add here except the oil filter is in a really stupid place (facing the engine mount/subframe/steering rack). GReddy do a relocation kit which puts it towards the gearbox, I would have preferred towards the front but there's obviously a lot more stuff there. Something I'll have to look at for the next service perhaps. First time using Valvoline oil, although I can't see it being any different to most other brands Nice... The oil filter location... At least the subframe wont rust any time soon I picked up a genuine fuel filter, this is part of the fuel pump assembly inside the fuel tank. Access can be found underneath the rear seat, you'll see this triangular cover Remove the 3x plastic 10mm nuts and lift the cover up, pushing the rubber grommet through The yellow fuel line clips push out in opposite directions, remove these completely. The two moulded fuel lines can now pull upwards to disconnect, along with the wire electrical plug. There's 8x 8mm bolts that secure the black retaining ring. The fuel pump assembly is now ready to lift out. Be mindful of the fuel hose on the side, the hose clamp on mine was catching the hose preventing it from lifting up The fuel pump/filter has an upper and lower section held on by 4 pressure clips. These did take a little bit of force, it sounded like the plastic tabs were going to break but they didn't (don't worry!) The lower section helps mount the fuel pump, there's a circular rubber gasket/grommet/seal thing on the bottom where the sock is. Undo the hose clip on the short fuel hose on the side to disconnect it from the 3 way distribution pipe to be able to lift the upper half away. Don't forget to unplug the fuel pump too! There's a few rubber O rings that will need transferring to the new filter housing, I show these in the video at the bottom of this write up. Reassembly is the reverse Here's a photo of the new filter installed, you'll be able to see where the tabs are more clearing against the yellow OEM plastic Once the assembly is re-installed, I turned the engine over a few times to help build up fuel pressure. I did panic when the car stopped turning over but I could hear the fuel pump making a noise. It eventually started and has been fine since. Found my 'lucky' coin underneath the rear seat too The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLJ65pmQt44&t=6s
