I want to upgrade either the intercooler or the management but i am not sure which one. Can anyone help with pros and cons of each one. I have a Blitz 3inch stainless steel system from the turbo back with hi flow cat and muffler and an Apexi pod filter, Gab coil over suspenion. Maybe there is something else that should be done before please let me know any feedback will be valued

Cheers Jon:burnout:

After seeing gus's car @ the sst dyno day I'd be inclined to say do the ecu first. He's making over 260hp with exhaust, bleed valve and a powerfc and is still using the stock intercooler, and I dont think he's having any drama's with detonation. If you want to put a bigger turbo on or use the car for track work or want to fang its tits off in 30+ degree heat I'd consider the intercooler at some stage.

Grey skys, yeah, go for the management. Decide how far you want to take engine mods and find a s-afc for the short term or a pfc for the long term.

drifta, don't you also have a mega-dollar exhaust manifold? That would make some difference too.

Nexus_SiX, I like your intro www page. Almost got me, then I started wondering why I was seeing an IE error while using Opera under Linux :D.

A Wolf plug and play is $2000 drive away with boost control and

PC sortware and lead, fully tuned. It can run any injectors you want and can use the airflow meter or the in built MAP sensor and has air temp compensation and many Aux outputs+ inputs,

Power FC have no Aux outputs and boost control is a high cost

extra and is stuck with an airflow meter and a handcontroller.

Steve - judging from the results in Gus's car vs Paul's car, which is in front in your opinion?

Top end power vs $$ spent it seems the Apexi one is the better of the two - just wondering if you wanted to add your thoughts..

John, why don't you put it on the dyno before you decide? I am just about to install my S-AFC, then I will get it dyno tuned. I will give yoiu before and after results. I still have the stock intercooler, we have similar mods on our cars, so results should be similar.

Personally I don't think it is worth spending a lot of money on ecu chips ( is that what they are?).

angel...

on my R33 with cat back HKS, stock turbo and stock cooler... running 12psi

Before SAFC - 181rwhp

After SAFC - 221rwhp

** and after leaving the workshop fried my clutch with 5 minutes.

Id also be very interested to hear opinions on this..

I went through the whole Power FC vs Wolf 3D V4 thing a little while back. As some of you know, I ended up getting the Wolf through SST and to this point, extremely happy with it. I have 260rwhp at 15psi using stock turbo and injectors on a SR20DET (S14).

Why did I go for the Wolf?

1. Laptop tunable - there is so much more resolution and it is heaps easier than using a hand controller

2. Built in boost control - no need for aftermarket EBC

3. Can use MAP or MAF - with the Power FC you can only use MAF (unless you get the D-Jetro, which is JDM market only, thus no warranty in Oz). Sure you can buy a Z32 MAF, but that adds another $300+ to the price of your modifications

4. Logging - the Wolf has simple logging on the handcontroller, advanced PC based logging coming soon.

5. Price - at near $2k installed and tuned, can you really go wrong? And this is with local support and warranty.

6. Multiple maps - using either a laptop or the memory modules, you can switch between maps on the fly.

There is heaps more, and I love it :-)

I'm hoping for around 260ish HP at 12psi from my AFC2..

p.s. I got 208 at 7psi with retarded timing and lotsa misfiring....

You've got much the same mods as me Strich... methinks you'll be looking round 250 which you'll find is a nice improvement on 208! :D

If you don't have an auto go the light flywheel. Drop your 1/4 times by 0.4sec.

Management over the intercooler. Even the humble S-AFC II will work wonders and leave some coin for other mods.

All up I reckon for $2k you can :

Ogura flywheel / S-AFC II / HKS exhaust cam gear / KCA349 rear cradle kit / Maybe get a custom front underdrive pulley machined up and some exhaust wrap.

Thanks for all of the replies guys, think i might go for the management side of things the wolf system sounds the shot. How much power do you think i will make after the computer with the mods that i have? Will i need a boost controller with the wolf 3D or are there different settings on the computer, if so how easy are they to alter, will i be able to do it myself or will it have to go back to SST. Steve how much will it cost to get a power run done. I stopped in Myaree duno tune and it was going to cost me $125 which sounded a bit rich.

cheers jon

    • Have a vb in honour of the car comming back
    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
