Can someone help me bust some bro-science; friend of mine claimed that lifting heavy weights shortened tendons, I said I couldn't believe and wanted to see where he got this idea from, then he claims that heavy lifting and not stretching shortens tendons. I've heard so much crap this week

he just said shorten, makes no sense. That means the muscle would have to lengthen. No argument for it at all which is why when I challenged it he claimed it occurred in the absence of stretching. Maybe he could be right - but it sounds ridiculous and I've heard enough to start asking questions on here.

Maybe a broscience thread would be handy...

Even if there's truth to it, which I doubt there is, what exactly is he afraid of happening? Tendons shrinking into nothingness and inability to move limbs? It sounds to me like he's a squat dodger and this is his way of justifying it. People will often crap on about how dangerous heavy lifting is and *insert excuse here not to do it*...it's their way of dealing with their inability to develop strength or their jealousy of others.

bullshit... provided you lift with full ROM you'll be fine

I hate stretching preachers... usually vegetarians who scoff when you tell them you don't do yoga... what the fck has being flexible ever done... it's not going to save my life

'I got mugged by this crackhead last night... he tried to stab me but I was able to get into downward dog pose and escape'

strong people are more useful and harder to kill... I read that somewhere

Hahaha yes I've also read it, massive truth behind it though.

I do quite a bit in the way of stretching, I used to be pretty bad but now im really flexible. I think its beneficial but no useful applications for me.

He's not really avoiding lifting heavy (not when I'm around) and it was kinda mentioned randomly which added to the 'wtf factor'

Cocaine is a hell of a drug...

I'll wade into this.

Shorten tendons? TROLOL. Shorten ROM I'd agree with. I've seen plenty of people lifting heavy shorten the ROM to get sets/reps in because they just care about the numbers, nobody ever won gold for having a better ROM than the next guy so long as it meets minimum requirements.

That said, for me, stretching (warm up AND warm down) make s a monumental difference because I sit all day. Both the Myo and the Physio said there was no need to stop lifting with my back twinge because it was simple compensatory and due to misalignment of things, poor ROM in certain areas etc. This ios largely being fixed by massage and stretching.

So when people say I should do yoga or some shit like that, they are probably right. I can't remember which fast bowler it was (McGrath or Lee) who had recurring issues (think it was Lee) and spent the entire off season focusing on mad stretching and came back better/faster/stronger without the issues.

I'm very pro stretching these days because every soft tissue strain I've had has largely been fixed by improving ROM through stretching, but as for your tendons literally being shortened? No.

That aside.

I can get this rack, plus a bench to go in it for about $550 delivered. The problem is the guy can't tell me the width between the dip handles and they're not adjustable. Not sure if I should risk it or not, there are other racks, and on that is $100 cheaper but I can't get them here for less than about $200 bucks so it works out more expensive.

Dude it's a spa, get with it :D

MY question is more so to do with whether or not there's an issue with the grips being too wide.

Do you wind up with extra strain in areas you don't want etc.

I hit the gym with a mate once and just jumped on a proper dipping station and went at it and it was fine but maybe that was just a good width for me.

I have this rack but without the pulley stuff:

and this bench:

what sort of barbell have you got? most power racks are going to require you to use a full width olympic bar so theres enough space between the collars...

I find dips at any width is better than doing lady dips on the edge of a lady spa with 2kg in the pocket of my lady pants.

I'll have you know it's now 5kg AND my feet are up on a box to make it harder thank you very much :D

Decent looking stuff. I did think about the bar, it's a random bar I got ages back, weighs about 10kg I think, honestly not sure of width. If I need a new one I'll get one. It'd have to be as tall as me though so at least 6ft long.

Just do the farkin dips; do you think Arnie said oh noes not 21" bars...I can't dip to this.

Dipshits

LOL Just covering my bases given how my shoulder reacted to OHP of only 45 or so kg. It's either weak or I was doing something wrong so want to make sure I'm not about to be stuck with a bit of gear that locks me into a poor form.

I can almost garuntee that if its only 6ft it will not be 1320mm between the collars

    • So, version 4 intake is on its way I was looking at these a while ago but at around $200 or more it was a little pricey for something that might not work, but, I had it in my watch list, but, I got a message saying it was on special, and I had a code thingie to use, it eventually came in at $120 delivered, so BAM, BUY NOW.....LOL I'll need to have a look when it arrives but I feel it will "look" better than what I currently have, as it comes with a PCV fitting, so I will be able to get rid of the alloy pipe that goes to the throttle body with the PCV fitting  Well, that's what the voices in my head are telling me  Oh, and this happened today Yeap, it was a Trojan, and it was cheap, so I headed back to the hardware store and actually spent a little bit more on a heavy duty,  one that was actually recommended by a plumber mate, a Cyclone one with a fibreglass handle that is actually rated for clay The broken shovel will eventually be "modified" into a short handle shovel
    • When you pulled it off, there is no signs of blown head gasket? Is it possible you have some other issues going on? Possible cracked blocked? Or do you think it's straight up lifting the head? Did you check what the head was torqued to before pulling it down (To see if possibly they're stretching, or starting to break threads out etc)?
    • Seems like a decent result for a modded JZX110. They are bulky in comparison to the 100 and 90 models (which I'd prefer myself) but they are getting very few and far between here in JP these days. Thanks for the detailed review and the import process into the UK. I also have a car which I'm hoping to export from Japan at some stage so it's good to know if someone from the UK was interested in it. By the way the corrosion underneath is par for the course for cars which were located in/near the mountains or along the Japan sea coastline. They get huge amounts of snow every winter and the sodium chloride is used on the roads. Many cars have some kind of rubber like treatment underneath but they tend to limit it to the wheel arches underbody and fuel tank. Suspension arms and sub-frames will have similar corrosion to your JZX110 which is a common sight. See it all the time and car dealers here generally don't even mention it unless asked.
    • If the sound goes away when you clutch in, the 1.5/2 way diffs are just shit, and you are a normal person. The diff is likely "fine" but driving at anything under 30kmh is a violent horrible experience. It would be exaggerated with solid diff bushings and subframe bushings if you have those.
