Just wondering.. when police test your exhaust.. what do they do?

i know they rev it like to 3000rpm and it has to be less than 90db

but like a few nites ago i was watching some NZ cop series.. and they did some testing on the exhaust

it sounded like the cop held it at 3000rpm.. then when they did the test... it sounded like the policeman put more throttle on it

the guy got busted for like 106db.. got a defect sticker on his car

anyone know? i'm a bit confused

another question... r motorbikes, truck & buses the same? i.e 90db? or do they have another figure?

I've been sent a letter home from the EPA surprisingly for a reported loud exhaust, mine is pretty darn quiet. Someone must of dobbed me in.

Anyways had to go to a muffler shop and get it tested.

For a Skyline, the letter said it had to be revved to half the rev range, but mine said 4500rpm. Got it tested, all was under until the throttle was lifted at which point a couple of small pops set the reader over 90db.

so what happened?

did u pass? :domokun:

Engineers certificates.

Problem is that anything that is non standard, i.e aftermarket, is a defect.

Harleys generally come standard, hence no defect.

really? so ur saying.. if nissan puts like a 6inch exhaust.. and it was stock... then it would be legal?

even if it was over 90db?

no. for a car to be able to be registered it has to meet ADR standards. that includes from factory.

but also motorbikes have different rules to cars, otherwise they would be in trouble for all sorts of things that apply to cars, like no number plate on the front, tyre size differences, etc.

and buses and trucks are under different rules because they aren't considered light vehicles. and the fact that you need a different licence to drive them then it is fair to say that they shouldn't have to meet the same emission laws. if you did make them meet the emissions laws then there would be twice as many as there are now as they wouldn't have the power (well torque) to carry as much as they do.

that is not true. motor bikes are subject to different emissions law. as do busses.

as for NZ testing? that has no relevance for you mate if you live in sydney :domokun: so don't worry about it.

Cool Thanks mad082.. i get what u mean!! :domokun:

haha Beer Baron.. after watching that cop show.. it just got me thinking.. coz.. isn't NZ and AUS police.. kinda the same?

anyways how does aussie cops do it? :P

Thanks!

harleys are in a different class, hence different regulations. me muffler man told me that.

so stop the crying, u cant compare yourself to a bike.

no more debate on this subject...its a clear cut law, ask your muffler mate next time.

R33cruiser.. were not debating abt how bikes r louder then cars and how it's unfair..

i was just wondering about how police check db's on an exhaust.. then trikdoutvl... said how it's unfair that harleys r louder than normal cars :domokun:

:D

All motorcycles are tested at a higher RPM was 5000rpm or where maxium torque is made last time I checked.

All motorcycles must be manufactured to meet strick laws including the euopean DB of 89. Guess what Australia is a prinprick in sales and they don't make them lowder just for us. Last time in the ACT we were pushing for 95db across all bikes, but I think it's set to 93db or 96db for those over 20 years old (not sure on exacts here). Australian's often put aftermarket mufflers on the bikes to obtain a crisper note.

As I understand it, there are binding circumstances that have to be adhered to when conducting a dB test as it falls under relevant Weights & Measures Legislation- I'm sure Geoff would know more.

From memory it is something like 2m behind the car & within a certain angle in relation to the tip etc at a given rpm.

They cannot simply stand there & aimlessly point a measuring device at the vehicle, rev the snot outa it & come up with a pass or more usually a fail without conducting the test correctly.

As for bikes, apart from the "look at me" wankers & the plastic gangsters on their tractors (Harleys), the main reason for having a loud pipe on a bike is so the stereotypical Aussie knob can actually HEAR when they are near a bike because the old "sorry I didn't see you" excuse for putting someone on a bike in hospital & worse happens WAY more than it ever should & simply isn't good enough.........

& before someone inevitably comes out with it, yes there are some idiots on bikes that simply shouldn't be on the road due to their conduct, lack of skill & simple dis-regard for others but that sadly is not a unique occurrence, across any given sub-culture.

Mate ive got a solution for You, I have a VERTEX Muffler which has a electronic silencer in it , in other words when the boys in blue pull you over you just press the switch and the muffler Closes Up :domokun: Ive used it many times as cops have pulled me over and they had nothing on me :D

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
