Hey guys,

Yesterday I nearly ran up the back of a Camry because they had to brake suddenly to stop at a yellow light. I thought I was going to run up the back of them!! I know I need new brakes, but I didnt think they were that bad.

Here are my two options:

1. I can get my hands on some R33 GTS-T parts for under a $1k. These include hubs, rotors, calipers, master cylinder, and LSD diff.

2. Keep the 4-stud hubs and upgrade the rotors and calipers for aftermarket items. Rotors would be BDA, slotted and possibly drilled, but I'm not sure about the calipers.

Which would be cheaper to do, and what would be better? I love my car, my license, and I do not want to hit/harm/kill anyone or anything because my brakes are shit. Any help would be appreciated.

Rhys

I'd be surprised if your standard brakes can't do 1 stop if they are in good condition.

is the pedal mushy? does it vibrate underfoot? what tyres are you running?

I would make sure you have OK tyres on and bleed the brakes with good fluid. THat should do the trick

Its an NA R33. So i personally wouldn twaste any money on them...R33 GT25t brakes are relatively cheap and would be worlds better and not overly expensive since the range of pads/rotors that are available for these calipers

LOL the son of rajab of brakes has spoken and its good advise

shane666, a shuddering under braking almost always means warped discs - a quick skim/machining of the discs should sort it out.

Roy, as you know I'm always a fan of bigger brakes, but I bet even the na brakes are OK. How many piston, how big is the pad and how big is the rotor. Can't be worse than the 350z which means it is always fine for at least 1 big stop.

I'm not saying the stock brakes are good for a thrashing or track day, but for a single stop at traffic lights they should be fine

Yeh, they do get a bit of a thrashing, which is another reason why I want 2 upgrade. The NA brakes are tiny, and really shit. The pads are fine, but the rotors need machining, so instead of paying all this money, I just want an upgrade. The car will probs end up at the track later on in its life, so better start now. Plus I value my safety, and I really hate the 4-stud pattern on the car. I'm probs going to upgrade the brakes with R33 GTS-t brakes, calipers and hubs, as well as better fluid among other things. Good tyres are good, but they are expencive to replace after some "fun", not that I'm into that sort of thing at all...

Thanks for all the advice tho guys, I appreciate it.

Fair point...but my consideration was there are people that drive their cards damn hard on the street. That and on the street you dont get the weide open throttle stretches to cool brakes...its stop start etc. But i do agree that generally if its a street car dont get carried away with brakes. But talking to ppl im horrified by how many boil the brakes on the street. So my new rule is im in the minority when it comes to being an old man tryign to get 450kms from every tank

Ok, that said, R33 NA brakes are basically S13 brakes. So you have twin piston floating floating calipers on the front on what i think is a 280mm rotor with single piston caliper on the rear with a solid disc....i killed my personal laptop with all the brake crap i have collated over the years so cant readily refer to it to confirm the above.

But for a 1350odd kg car that has good suspension and enough grunt to get up some real speed on the street....i dont think its a huge leap to say they are under braked....especially when there is a cheap alternative in GTS25T brakes which also opens up the world of much cooler wheels

    • Put a fuel pressure gauge on it. Replace the turbos. Probably completely separate issues.
    • What copper washer do you guys use on the bleeder bolts? The existing one I have I had no idea where to find it in a local store, I did buy some online but that are only 1mm thick whereas my old one is 2mm+ thick and when I put the new washer out and squeeze the top radiator hose I can hear a bit of air but not with the old one. Does this matter? The new one doesn't leak, but the inner diameter is a bit loose whereas the old one threads on the bolt.
    • Howdy all, after being out a few weeks ago on a spirited drive in my GTR I have 2 issues that oddly have appeared at the same time. Whilst accelerating quickly through the gears all of a sudden i’ve lost power at the top of third gear (below redline around 6000rpm) for no obvious reason.    From that point onwards the car has been running rich on idle, won’t really rev under load without a ton of black smoke and the odd backfire, and dying as a pull up to a set of lights unless I keep the revs up around 1500rpm. In addition when shutting down the car that same night (I was 10 minutes from home) I noticed one of the turbos was significantly noisy on wind down when shutting off the engine. After letting the car cool down overnight it starts up fine, although once it gets to temp the revs start to creep up and down, the exhaust is darker than it should be and it also sounds like it’s running rich (fat note) I’ve put a new set of plugs in it - no change, the old plugs all seemed OK with two of them being somewhat richer/fueled up than the other 3 with 1 being borderline. I’ve smoked tested the intake system via the front of the Turbos, found a split vacuum hose going to the factory boost gauge sender, which I have since replaced.  Also found another leak on the gasket coming off the rear turbo outlet, have also replaced this. After fixing both of these leaks - still have the running rich issue. I’ve also tried another pair of AFM’s - no change here After pulling off the front turbo intake pipes, there is obvious shaft play in the front turbo, which now hisses loudly on light revvs although I can’t see why this would make the car run funny even under idle. I’m curious to know why it’s running rich before I potentially replace/rebuild turbos. The car is completely stock <50,000kms  other than an exhaust. Oil and coolant are all clear. I haven’t bothered with coil packs as it looks like they won’t be the issue due to condition of the plugs. Any help appreciated as I cry myself to sleep!
    • No probs at all. I used to love trying to dig up obscure info for those in need where possible going back 20+ years on SAU.  I did have another look and couldn't come up with any closer match. I'm leaning towards those skirts in your first pic are custom fitments, cut down/extended or from another car entirely and modded to fit an R34 sedan. I would've thought someone in Japan had them and taken a photo at some stage over the last 2 decades but there's nothing. Someone out there must know surely.
