hey guys

i have dyno'd my r33 s1 and got a very rich 170rwkw. basic mods, fmic, exhaust, coilpacks, STOCK boost / turbo

i finally hooked up some data logging equipment and found out my air flow meter is hittin 5.1v at 6000rpm (just when my AF ratio plummets to 10.5)

now its fairly safe now obviously, besides clogging my cat and killing my wb02, but this leaves no head room for me what so ever if i wish to run a bit more boost and reep some more KW

i thought the AFM would go to 190-210rwkw before i started having headroom issues? is this normal?

and i have spent HOURS hunting down boost leaks, only ever found one AGES ago

Man that's running pretty rich.. it goes lower than 10:1 but they haven't scaled it so you can see exactly where it goes..

Looks like a boost leak to me. Turbo is drawing air in through the AFM but the air isn't making it to the engine as it is escaping somewhere - so the ECU is pouring fuel in to suit the amount of power you SHOULD be making/the amount of air that should be making it to the motor but since the airs not there you are just running really rich.

Times like this I wish I had an AFM, as I think I *might* have a boost leak though not too sure.

Does sound like your AFM has either bit the dust or like i think has already been mentioned, has a leak causing incorrect metering to the ecu

Testing with someone elses known working AFM is going to be a great test but you could also simply try taking off your AFM and giving it a good once over with some CRC Contact Cleaner!

170rwkw @ 7psi?.

I had similar mods before i put a boost controller in and i was getting 185rwkw (exhaust, pod, fmic, but tuned with a power fc)

i would assume this was due to the turbo back exhaust, but my stock solenoid was now running my car at 9-10psi.

i've got my old dyno sheet somewhere on my floor no doubt :D

Not sure how you tested for boost leaks but here is a cheap way to do it and very effective.

http://www.vfaq.com/mods/ICtester.html

I'm sure almost everyone could make one of those..

thats how i tested mine. hardest thing about doing that test is the fact that there is a million breather pipes that come off the intercooler piping and vent to the intake manifold and the engine. i could only pressurise the system for maybe 5 secs at a time. but had unlimited amount of air so i spent ages doing it. only found one leak and fixed that.

ill try a mates afm, then maybe put my smic back on, see if that changes my a/f ratio and my afm readings.

cheers guys

How would mixtures affect an airflow meter's reading? Its purely based on the amount of air flowing through it, which is related to the size of the turbo and amount of boost being run, not the tuning though.

Better mixtures would help make a bit more power though as you've said.

Also, the management currently is stock ecu, no remaps or anything (Id hate to see 10:1 mixtures on a so called 'tuned' ecu )

And Pegg, Ill lend you my AFM for a bit and you can take it for a whirl, see if that makes a difference. Msg me :P

Exactly my point, the engine may be using 200rwkw worth of air, but because it is drowning, it makes significantly less power. That combined with the severely retarded ignition timing that it would be running explains the power loss. You really need to get some management in it.

    • So, version 4 intake is on its way I was looking at these a while ago but at around $200 or more it was a little pricey for something that might not work, but, I had it in my watch list, but, I got a message saying it was on special, and I had a code thingie to use, it eventually came in at $120 delivered, so BAM, BUY NOW.....LOL I'll need to have a look when it arrives but I feel it will "look" better than what I currently have, as it comes with a PCV fitting, so I will be able to get rid of the alloy pipe that goes to the throttle body with the PCV fitting  Well, that's what the voices in my head are telling me  Oh, and this happened today Yeap, it was a Trojan, and it was cheap, so I headed back to the hardware store and actually spent a little bit more on a heavy duty,  one that was actually recommended by a plumber mate, a Cyclone one with a fibreglass handle that is actually rated for clay The broken shovel will eventually be "modified" into a short handle shovel
    • When you pulled it off, there is no signs of blown head gasket? Is it possible you have some other issues going on? Possible cracked blocked? Or do you think it's straight up lifting the head? Did you check what the head was torqued to before pulling it down (To see if possibly they're stretching, or starting to break threads out etc)?
    • Seems like a decent result for a modded JZX110. They are bulky in comparison to the 100 and 90 models (which I'd prefer myself) but they are getting very few and far between here in JP these days. Thanks for the detailed review and the import process into the UK. I also have a car which I'm hoping to export from Japan at some stage so it's good to know if someone from the UK was interested in it. By the way the corrosion underneath is par for the course for cars which were located in/near the mountains or along the Japan sea coastline. They get huge amounts of snow every winter and the sodium chloride is used on the roads. Many cars have some kind of rubber like treatment underneath but they tend to limit it to the wheel arches underbody and fuel tank. Suspension arms and sub-frames will have similar corrosion to your JZX110 which is a common sight. See it all the time and car dealers here generally don't even mention it unless asked.
    • If the sound goes away when you clutch in, the 1.5/2 way diffs are just shit, and you are a normal person. The diff is likely "fine" but driving at anything under 30kmh is a violent horrible experience. It would be exaggerated with solid diff bushings and subframe bushings if you have those.
