First of all i'm not a car person if something went wrong i normally send it back to nissan for a service.

Recently they were running a consult diagnos. on a new latio so i approached the technician and asked if they could check mine but they told me its pointless to check if the "check engine" light is not lit.

FYI, my car runs okay but not entirely that smooth and i just wanted to check if all the minor stuffs are working , sensors, air fuel ratio , ignition timing and rpm bla bla bla.

The question is, do i really need to see that red "check engine" light to know all the values for my afr,ignition timing and rpm and ESPECIALLY SENSORS?

I've tried to ask around workshops that has the consult and they told me the same thing. You need to have that "check engine light" thing or its pointless to hook up the consult.

someone clarify this please?

You dont. When you put your ignition to the on position thats Diagnosis Mode 1 - this is the one u notice every morning when u start the car. With the car running, u have to short two terminals in the diagnosis plug (or using consult) to switch to Diagnosis Mode 2 - this will test another array of sensors not usually checked every time u start your car. Turning off to the ON position and turning it back on after DM2 puts it in DM3 - or o2 sensor mode

DM2 errors will not flash up i believe until u run a diagnosis. Your ecu remembers the errors for 50 starts unless u do an ecu reset even if its fixed

BTW u can do the same thing that a consult can do with the check light on the ecu, or the engine warning lamp. If u can steal an oscilliscope from uni your laughing

What the hell mechanic is this? Thats bulls**t, if its a good mechanic he'd check it out no matter what.

What do you mean when ya cars not running entirely smooth? You done an oil / oil filter change, check spark plugs, battery, fuel injectors, ingnition system, timing / fan belts, all the regular things you need to look out for... Your ECU will be able to check to see if the sensors are working...

yeah LOL i'm not sending my car back to nissan anymore mate. Just did a plug change and they swapped copper plugs meant for NA cars for me(i believe the plugs for nissan MAXIMA, couldn't be bothered to remember because i was pissed). Didn't realise it until the car missfire like mad a couple days after the service. NissASS charged me AUD25 per plugs, thats a total of AUD150 for shitty NA copper plugs WTF!!!

someone tell me should i or should i not sue nissan for this!!!!!

Yep thats why I hate mechanics&autoelecs, better off doing the work yourself :D

Just download the workshop manuals, its all in there www.importworkshop.com, with all the codes etc.

Eventually I'll make a cheap tool that plugs in and does the pulse/code interperetation to a single LED sometime soon

Sorry to hijack your thread, but can anyone confirm this, im not sure if its a typing/translation error in the manuals i have.

on an R31, R32, R34 the error code for "43" would be: long x4, short x3 pulses and on an R33 the code for "43" is: long x3 short x4 both 12secs in duration

No offence but somtimes you customers are incredible! Lets just say you have a busted knee, do you just walk in on a doctor doing an operation and say can you look at my knee? No you don't. Most cases you have to book in (waiting list) and make an appointment for a specific purpose, to which a given amount of time is allocated.

Lets just say you've got your car in for a $1000+ service and the mechanic is half way through changing the timing belt has to leave what he's doing to go and plug their machine/scan tool (which may cost upwards of $7000) just for a blow in off the street who doesn't want to pay for the use of the expensive equipment or the technician using it(most often upwards of $100 an hour!) he comes back and forgets to tighten the tensioner up, you come back in 3000ks with bent valves wanting to tear someones head off!

Everybody expects something for nothing these days, you don't call a plumber/electrician to your place and expect to pay nothing or have them there right the minute you call, you have a time they think they can get there and a call out fee, so why should it be any different at a workshop, not to mention that a mechanic in a dealership situation has to account for every minute of his working day for productivity and efficiency.

Hooking the machine up to your car and going through the data with the customer would be the best thing to do for goodwill and customer satisfaction, but this scenario is not always practical.

Usually when you walk into a hospital theres a receptionist to deal with it. And yes, you do ask if they "can have a look at my busted knee". From there your usually given a number/time/appointment whatever to wait, but in this case the guy just fobbed him of with b/s. He would of been better off saying "sorry mate, i dont have any time, its not worth me doing it, or call later and make an appointment", not saying if it aint broke it aint need it. Im sure he was willing to pay for the blokes time. Nothings free

Its not the fobbing off i dont like, no offence, its just the level of detail/sophistication people generally work to. Im anal, precision all the way

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
