Fuel Tank Restoration

Hey Everyone

I couldn't find anything on here about fuel tank restoration, so now I have done it myself, I thought I'd give people a heads up. I had rust in my tank which was a little bad, but then got really bad after I left it on the garage floor for a few weeks.

Basically what I did was clean it out with hydrochloric acid and water. This ate the rust AWESOME! Then I used the POR15 product ($108) and followed their directions, it came out all good! Awesome stuff.

I am not gonna write up a thing on how to do it as others have on the net, but here are some links.

Make sure you get a mask and face protection for the acid. Cost me around $50 for the mask/canisters, $3 gloves, already had a face sheild. Don't risk it.

Here is one of the guides I found was pretty detailed.

good idea mate. it's a common problem in 32 GTSTs and can get really bad. realllly bad.

another way to solve the problem is to install a 32 GTR fuel tank. can be had for a reasonable price, hold a bit more fuel (i think) but best of all they are plastic. so no rust, and safer too. :turned:

Yeah that was suggested to me, the guy I was gonna get the tank off reckons it would not have fitted with the exhaust I had. Otherwise I would have done that.

Ha Chris,

have you done anything about the baffle yet??? fuel tank foam should be able to be purchased from Revolution Racegear if required. I know there is one in Newcastle, give them a try.

Well done.

good luck with your drifting on Sunday, just don't blow your motor due to fuel surge. you should be all right if you have heaps of fuel in tank. Where are you drifting??? place???

Sorry for the thread dig. I was asked about this recently and just found this thread.

Forgot to post back saying drifting without the baffle was fine. Drifted for another year before I sold it.
