Are Harnesses Legal?

Generally NO

For passenger vehicles manufactured on or after 1/1/69 but prior to 1/1/75 the fitting of harness belts would

only be considered on presentation of an engineering report prepared by a Chartered Professional Engineer

which demonstrates continued compliance with ADR 5A - Seat Belt Anchorages.

The fitting of harness seat belts to passenger vehicles manufactured to comply with ADR 4B - Seat Belts, i.e.

manufactured on or after 1/1/75, is usually not permitted.

Some manufacturers of harness seat belts have undertaken testing to the appropriate Standards and are marked

accordingly. Appropriately Transport SA may accept marked harness seat belts in some vehicles providing the

mounting of the harness is to an acceptable standard.

As the topic states Im just wanting to know if a TRS 4 point harness that has a British Std is 'LEGAL'?

It has a proper seat belt buckle on the lap.

Cheers

Adam

I dunno. I find that all depends on the person who is dominating/being dominated. You'd wanna check with the manufacturer to see if it works in conjunction with a ball gag, and if there are any restraint loops to help keep your gimps under control..

oh hangon..

whoops

last time i checked you couldnt have harnesses in your car.....as its illegal to remove rear seats and you prob have to remove your rear seats to have your harness

somebody asked this in a thread on the 31 club (we have a "ask the Mallala Cop" thread)

I am guessing you are going to fit a race quality 5 point harness into the car too, to avoid my suggested passenger injuries, as after all the car will be in drag configuration. The sad thing is ... 5 point harness systems are NOT Australian Design Road compliant (I don't get it either but it is legislation), you have to fitted and worn a lap/sash style seat belt as normally fitted in this car as what would have been fitted in it at the time it rolled from the factory floor. You will need an Motor Vehicle Engineer's certificate for most of your modifications (cost a fortune) but I fear the car will not come from Regency (Vehicle Inspection) with a pass

A race harness can be approved, as long as the rear seats are removed and an appropriate anchorage point used (like a 4 point roll cage - hence, remove back seats) and then backed up with an Engineers Certificate. I think there is also the pre-requisite that fixed front seats (ie non-reclining like SAAS race seats) are also used.

I had this done to a project car of mine years ago, but can't recall the minor details of it now. But I did get it approved under an Engineers Certificate.
