Take it down to a data recovery company immediately... $270 is a reasonable price for the work involved. Do not try recovery software or touch the drive.. you could be making subsequent recovery more difficult if you try. If your documents mean anything to you, get an expert to look at it.

I know of a few places in Adelaide that do recovery, just pm me if you want more info.

$270 is a shit price for a piece of hardware that still works, it just wiped the header files... the HDD isn't broken...

If it's a bad header.. that's a crap price... if it's a crashed hardie then i've seen worse prices than $270. But seriously, if the data is that important, e.g. you have your 4 years thesis on it or something without a backup, then it's not much to pay.

Me? Nope. I work with pretty critical data though, defence / health records etc... if it's a screwed ntfs header we just fix that using a hex editor, if the drive sounds like it's crashed, we usually send it to the experts. If we try formatting it, or reading off the crash drive, it could make things a lot more difficult to recover for the data specialists, so we tend to leave it alone.

The reason that the pro data recovery cost so much money is that they dismantle the hard drive, buy a new hard drive exactly the same, and then transplant the platter into the new drive to read the data. This needs to be done in an absolutely clean environment too. Most of the bigger data recovery places have a full on anti-dust clean room. This all costs money! :O

Did you get it fixeded up yet?

'

doof, your not on my msn cos you don't put out! pm'ed ya.

No.. Some genius switched the details over on the phone and internet company.. = no internet for me..

Dude.. You are posting in the NSW forums.. You have to be kidding right..

Agreed.. I'm not paying

Correct.. I'm very sterile too! :O

zackly :ermm: I went to a really good one of those once... was static and dust free and the workers had to wear air tight suits :O Their prices for what they charged were astronomical too! I got a quote to just change the motor on the HDD and it was over $500... Me thinks they work mostly for businesses, not little people like me...

Either way Dif, if you turned it on to find there was nothing there, that means the hardware is fine and you are only missing the header files... a software program will be able to sort that out and get most, if not all, of your files back

Yep It all works.. Just need to recover shit..

I'm pissed that our net is down.. and some f**k stole my memory stick so I cant download any programs.. GRRR..

Yep Primordial's right... has to be a hermetically sealed area. Oh well, if your data is priceless then that'd be your best bet.

Easy there son, just trying to help a brother out here.

I know but why would I send it to Adelaide..

It's not hardware problems it's software problems..

I'm not going to pay someone $270 to recover data when I can either do it myself or have people I know do it even cheaper.

If you don't do everything perfect, you might be in a worse situation than you are now.

I can see exactly where Howie is coming from - if the data is *that* criticial to you, don't play around trying to get it back with a free application. If it's stuff you can afford to lose if you totally stuff up, then go for gold :P

You're assuming it's not hardware... the reason I suggested Adelaide, was because I use a group who deal primarily with restoring data for the DoD and the higher education sector.. i've used them plenty of times and I trust them. They aren't backyarders, the owner holds a doctorate in computer systems engineering.

Exactly... if the data isn't *that* critical, then go your hardest... even try swapping the platter over to a replacement hard drive if you want.

If it is software, then you're laughing then aren't you ;)

pretty certain it's software, being that it turns on and shit...

IF it somehow turns out to be hardware, then yes, it will cost a lot of money, and you should leave it to the pros... BUT IT'S NOT! FOCUS PEOPLE!

I've used data recovery services twice in the last 15 years and am very happy.

If the data is important why would you bollocks around with it and possibly change it from simple to recover to impossible to recover.

On the other hand, if you can afford to lose it, go for it!

How'd you go Corrinne? Shouldn't be too hard to recover..

They're just going to do the same thing.. Deleted files only become hard to recover when you overwrite them and the pointers in the MFT/FAT/WHATEVER get changed.. Anyways, really depends on how much you value what's on there!

in the meantime - my 320G drive has suffered mechanical failure - quote from Seagate to restore it - $900-$1700 - price of my gearbox repairs.. yet to work out what i'll do.. Anyone got someone to recommend

    • Hi 🙋‍♂️. Just bought my Unicorn but the interior need some minor work so it would match my expectations ;). I noticed it is hard to get used oem floor mats in good condition so i started to dig if there's any chance to buy set of new ones. I found two websites - nengun and amayama and it looks like one can still buy factory new floor mats in Japan, but thers a small issue. Some mats (i assume genuine, oem ones) are marked as G4900 and these are "discontinued". The ones you can buy are marked as G4911 but i have no idea if these are also oem, made by other producer or some lower quality replacements that looks entirely different. Can anyone help? 😃  P.s. there is also some strange indication - 0V005, 0V015 and 0V505. Any idea what does it mean? Would appreciate any help with this 🙏
    • Hi, Marek here 🙋‍♂️. I finally fulfilled my longtime dream - recently bought Stagea and now waiting for it to arrive in Poland. There's only few of these in my country, and one of the owners  recommended mi this forum as a source of all the info i'd need since now i own one  so here i am.
    • Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though
    • and it ends up being already priced in as though you're just on 91RON without any ethanol. Car will lose a bit of economy as the short and long term fuel trims bring down the AFR back to stoich or whatever it is for cruise/idle for the engine.
    • Oh, you are right. But, in Australia E10 is based on 91RON fuel and ends up being 94RON. Hence it being the cheaper option for economy cars. The more performance oriented cars go for the 98RON fuel that has no ethanol mixed in. The only step up we have left then at some petrol stations is E85.
