IC piping material

OK, I have a question about IC piping. What are the different materials that can be used and what are the benefits/disadvantages in using different materials.

Also, i need the piping made in 60mm. What are the tightest mandrel bends I can get?

Also, any reccomendations of a place to get it done on the coast. Looking for best value (eg cheap but good job - what we all want eh!)

just bought myself a tig welder because of the cost of such thing so now i make my own pipes

and what are benefits / disadvantages of steel or aluminium.

Mild steel:

Cheap

Easy to use

Rusts on the inside and outside if no coated

Mid weight

Mild heat soak

Stainless Steel:

Expensive

Harder to use and cut

Will not rust and can be polished to mirror

HeavyHigh heat soak

Aluminium:

Mid / high price

Easy and hard to use, joins must be spot on for welding

Willnot rust and can be polished to mirror

Light

Low heat soak

Personally go for alloy if you can and have someone to weld

it for you. If not use mild steel and have it powder coated or

HPC coated for heat treatment.

DriftKing Performance in Bris can do nice piping I believe.

Yep alloy = aluminium.

Quite often alloy works out the same as mild steel with HPC coating. If someone suggests alloy WITH HPC coat don't do it as you are spending money on material that is pointless, just use mild steel and get it coated.

i was having a look around for dump pipes for the gtr and everyone wants to sell mandrel bent ones for 600 bucks.

so did some looking around and a 90 3' mandrel bend is 9 buck so for a total outlay of about 80 buck i can make my own.

also i want to try a few combos on the zorst with a twin 2.5' system and compare it to my 3.5' system

only use stainless if you want the look( doesnt make you go faster )

alloy would be the goods but you actually have to be a good welder to do that **** so might just stick to the mandrel bents

I agree mostly with boosty but i must admit prefering stainless steel in the real world.

As far as i know Ally mandrel bends and welding all up i think its gonna cost u double, I think it will be easier for ally to polish but thats about it..

Ultimately Ally would be best but no way i could afford it and i did my full pipe setup from turbo out to plenum for $200 including carton of crownies for tig welds and polished myself :-)

reason i wanted to do alloy is that there is a guy here in tweed that does it and quoted around $500 which i think is good cos he will do all the work... or i can lower the cost by cutting it myself..

i dont wanna do stainless due to $$$ and not mild cos I dont know anyone around here that does it.

and it all depends on when i get my redundancy money thats been owed to me since november 01....... but if i get what im meant to i might just go for the 1UZ (toyota soarer v8) coversion, so i can have a 200kw hilux surf

My stainless seemed pretty cheap to other mild steel quotes thats all, just had to ring around.

But for superiority yep go the Alluminium

allys not that hard to work with.most engineering workshops should have a good enought tig welder for that sort of stuff, but if u can cut it all up and work out and mark the pipes where u want it welded u might get away with it for maybe a few slabs of beer,ya never know

The last lot of piping I made was for a friends gtst. I used mild steel and as mentioned above cut it myself and marked the joins then taped the pipes together. Then took it to the local exhaust shop who actually oxy welded it (looks awesome) total cost for 8 welds + 6 welds around the ends to stop the pipes blowign apart was $35 (theye just charge by the hour @ $35/hour)

Not bad I thought and it looked good. Then we had the inside cleaned and the outside powder coated in metalic silver.
