Yeh i understand everyone points the finger. But come on, probably a 3000hp drag car on a suburban street, surely if he can pilot it to 6 second 1/4s he can work out for himself the situation (approved by organisers or not) is stupid?

or am i giving him too much credit?

u could just as easily say it was the spectators fault for lining up on a road where they know what he was about to do. it was a messy situation, everyone had a role in the events that took place, but really it is the responsibility of the organiser to provide the best safety for both spectators and drivers, they did not, they should be held accountable.

to me i like that he was helping charity. but surely he could have done it in a safer way?

im not sure how drag cars go with line lockies? (might not give enough air flow to cool the mental engine)

but he was dead set rocketing on that road. that speed in a car that has trouble keeping straight on a specialised purpose build drag strip can obviously be very dangerous on a standard street.

i think its a silly idea from the start. sadly innocent people were killed.

not signed

I agree with you mate - of course the organisers are to blame as well and should cop a punishment but the driver in the end is the one who made the decision to plant the foot in that uncontrolled environment knowing full well the power of the car. Not signed either. You cant blame the innocent spectators. Poor kids.

people standing on pit wall at a track if a crash happens on the straight.

targa/rallly stages where you are goin 100% but there is no guarantee there are no spectators around the next corner.

dutton rally where there was a main street based special stage in the middle of a very large crowd

not to mention other situations that happen all the time like speedway cars going over the spectator fences

In fact in a race I was in a couple of years ago, a fellow driver had a heart attack and died. What if he had been driving towards a barrier with spectators behind at the time? Same with Todd Wilks at Eastern Creek, Paul Flintoff at Mt Buller - these guys could have taken spectators with them. In Paul's case, how do you think David Reynolds feels? same with Marko Martin and Michael Park? What about Graham Beveridge at the Aus Gp, hit by a wheel and killed.

All the events you just named happened under controlled, supervised, official events. Im sure there was enough thought into what could happen and as you mentioned, barriers put in place to protect. The wheel is unfortunate and very hard to protect against. Ad into that, there would he paramedics, fire crews etc on scene ready for an incident. In this case, i doubt any were on hand in readyness for a problem.

None of them are comparible to a charity event on a suburban roped off street imo.

I dont want to start a fight, but i dont think im being harsh by saying driving a 3000hp funny car on a city street with a few thousand people standing behind rope is stupid. Driver and organisers combined. And we dont really know the full events to just blame the organisers. Was permission from the appropriate authorities given for that car to actually be on the road? if not that comes down on the driver. So therefore, illegal car speeding on city street killing people, in anyones language = serious charges.

Just my opinion, but more and more in this world people are trying to palm off their own actions and place them on another.

the guy that made the comment about speedweay cars goin g over the fence .as a speedway driver of some 20 yrs i can tell you that every competitor has insurence to cover any injuries or death in the case of someone been hurt or worse killed .

for the life of me i cant understand why this bloke did not have some form of public liabialty insurence if he did he would not be in the shit he is now .

as a driver he should know that things can and do go wrong at the end of the day you can blame the promoters or whoever you like but it was his desion to strap himself into that car that day and like it or not you have to be responable for your own actions .

not signed the guy was stupid to get in the car in the first place under those conditions

Accidents happen.. People should know that cars can lose control.. Crowd shouldn't of been standing there.. Driver shouldnt of agreed.. Organisers shoulda secured the area..

I don't think you can blame the driver without placing blame on anyone else.. agreed it was silly to get in the car when there was no proper barriers but is murder or manslaughter the correct punishment for stupidity.. he will have to live for the rest of his life knowing what happened and that is the worst punishment for someone who in the right state of mind will be devastated.. punishment should be reserved for the wicked or those who do things knowing they can harm others.. (drinking and driving knowing the risks).. but should he be placed in the same category? i mean the crowd was there knowing what was happening and knew risks where involved with no barriers.. and wasnt this event supervised?

shouldnt those government officials be charged for murder when they kill innocents to weed out the terrorists.. or invading other countries.. jsut like the families of those killed want punishment and pain.. shouldnt those families want revenge on those in governent who authorise strikes on others.. And that's why they attack back..

Simply i feel for the families but they want justice and punishment (if they do) cause they are hurt and angry.. but i feel that blame and punishment can't be placed soley on the driver.. however that is only my opinion.. it is a toss up and i sit on the fence as i see both sides.. but i dont think murder is the punishment for what happened so..

signed solely as everyone knew the risks and i think the organisers should take the wrath.. yes the driver was stupid for driving but the crowd was stupid for standing there..

sorry if this offends

ffs sake why debate what has happend???

if it all went to plan there would be no need for this thread, probably a thread saying, ("funny car doin burnout in street for chariety"), and then every1 would comment fully sick blah blah blah....

but shit happens and every1 turns there back on troy cause it went wrong, but end of the day he is the one that will live with it for the REST of his LIFE, behind bars or not..

what this thread should be about is suporting troy cause it was an innocent acciedent, and he was only doin what he was told and practised to do..

lol so many people i think in here just debate thing for the sake of it, like you have nothing better in life to stimulate you..

get a girlfriend it has done me good for the past 3 years, f*king wankers!!!!!!

so many soft cocks in here its not funny, we drive imports that most are modified, which means power and in most cases alot of power...

you cant expect to drive your cars or any cars, and not speed, drift, burnouts, doin burnouts for exebitions and chariety, and so on, and think nothing will happen and if something happens its called hooning, being imature or a dickhead behind the wheel..

its our cars that are our own influence, we do what we do in our cars cause, 1: there built for it, 2: we build them for it 3: cause we love our cars.. ect...

if you have a problem with people in the car scene and want to point your finger at every person that does a mistake, i sujest you sell your car, buy a hyundai, and let us do what we love in our cars!!!

and yer i admit there are some f*kheads that do stupid things in the wrong places, but when they get caught out they will learn...

a tragedy that should have been avoided by duty of care but if you have noticed when going into carparks, racetracks and places of the like, companies try to defer blame with the old we do not accept responsibility if you are hurt or your property is damaged whilst on our property it is a condition of entry that you wave any ability to sue ....prolly is whats happening here so there suing or trying to prosecute the next guy in line which happens to be troy..

+1 for petition

Signed, whether people agree or not the idea of this is to support him to get representation and advice legally to give him the best possible chance. He deserves that, even if he has to serve 10 charges instead of 20 its still a vote well worth it imo.

Remember, by signing the petition you are not necessarily condoning the activities that led to the tragedy in Selmer. You are asking the Australian Government to lend support to Troy...just as our government has given support to less savoury characters such as some of those incarcerated in Bali.

Discussion of Troy's culpability and the petition belong in separate threads.

Signed..

But I am sorry.. very poor organisation.. there should be some form of barries..

I do feel deepy sorry for Troy. Worst thing you could ever have lingering on your mind for a life time..

A public street is no place for a 3000kw car..

Wow.. some of you guys just sound so righteous. I think it was the responsibilty of the organisers to better facilitate safety barriers for the spectators.. if anything Troy should have discussed this with them..

point is it has happened.. my prayers go to Troy and to the families that have lost their loved ones.. everyone involved has a responsibility in this...

I have signed because I think killing six people is punishment enough.. and I would not leave one of our own to be punished and judged by the american justice system.

Wow.. some of you guys just sound so righteous.

Hey...I am righteous! and damned if I'll change, It's those self-righteous bastards you want to worry about :D

Signed

No point in giving my personal opinions..Mr.Keets is spot on.

  • 2 months later...

Well a good follow up to this:

http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/aussie-dr...8306938568.html

Troy is not going to jail, he has taken a deal for 1 year suspended sentence instead. Great to hear that it worked out for him.

but on a related issue....isn't the US legal system bullshit (and ours is going the same way). admit to a lesser charge that you are also not guilty of to make sure there is no chance of being done for a bigger charge.

    • jeebus. glad you weren't under it while performing the stunt. Also thanks for the link to the wheel measurer, exactly what I needed
    • In the older stuff there were very significant differences 2wd to 4wd, for example Stagea had strut front end for 2wd and double wishbone for 4wd so it was not minor to swap. From poking around the 2wd v37, it *looks* like it might be more possible; some of the parts specifically have "2wd" stamped on them which suggests the platforms are more similar. You'd still want to start with a 4wd half cut to swap stuff from though. I'd suggest if you don't have a tune on the ECU you don't really need one on the trans either. Throttle mapping is in the ECU side (and you can always use a Roar Pedal if you want the throttle to actually respond to your foot), and really if you are happy with the stock power you probably accept the stock trans behaviour too....its all made to be "sporty" not racey.
    • So, updates. I have not washed the car since it came back from Tassie. I've driven it around a bit but not got around to actually sorting it out. I DID raise it because I cracked the rear bar leaving a hotel which was very distressing. Interestingly, the car drives more compliant now that it's raised a fair bit (5mm front, 15mm rear). Also noticed that my FR height was 10mm lower than FL. So that's now sorted out, too. I also bought this and had it printed: https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/1576422240/wheel-and-tire-fitment-tool-universal?ref=shop_home_feat_1&dd=1&logging_key=08f604d9fa4cc383550ba985e6ac85cd5cac7fbb%3A1576422240 Now, if I was smart I would have taken my brake calipers off to actually use this correctly but it was evident enough to me that in the region where the caliper was... there was nothing to hit suspension/guard/arm wise. So I'm going with "it'll be fine" after using the tool to hopefully very precisely measure the wheel clearance. Also while doing this, I had the very VERY bad idea of jacking one of the wheels/suspension arms up while the rest of the car was on jack stands. I did this to see how the arm would travel. This all was well and good until the car slid off the stands and went through a fence. So don't do that. Incredibly nobody was hurt and there was only minor damage to the rear bumper as the car didn't have far to slide, and had 3-4 wheels on it. The only damage turned out to be the fence itself which was easy to fix, and a little bit of damage to the fibreglass rear bumper trim. I had already planned to try a touch up paint kit to fix the time I drove into my garage door to see if it'd help in the interim before I get it fixed properly. I used the Dr Colorchip kit after looking online and seeing everyone talking about it. Yes it's made for chips and not huge broken missing pieces and I'll be 500% recommending it for stone chips after using it for stupid things like me. This took about ... 10 minutes and looking at the half assed photo the 30 second job I did on the bumper corner was almost perfect just by using the tiny little brush and painting it in. The sealact stuff to remove over-painting is really useful, so if/when I do it again I'll likely slather the touch up paint well over it and then clean it up with the cleaning solution. The wheels should arrive in a couple of weeks. I am still kinda confident after doing a stupid amount of measuring (and borrowing a set of 18x10.5+15) that they will not fit because I overlooked something, somehow and flew too close to the sun. ALSO R34 GTR guard liners do not fit on a GTT. I bought the undertray brake duct guides and had the wonderful problem of them not fitting my intake, my oil cooler and the liners themselves were even worse. Attempting to fit them won't work in general - You would have to cut them up as another poster mentioned as the bodywork is different on the GTT. At least I can try to resell them. So instead of cutting those up, I cut up my old already-cut-up GTT liners and extended them by using some PP plastic and drilling some 8mm holes for some nissan clips for the 'extra' bit. Because I was happy to cut them I was able to mount them pretty damn forward so I now have some semblance of guard liners, and the brake vents seal the bumper from the bottom. It sort-of-looks like this, to give some idea - If you look at the GTR and then the GTT this is when I realised that I needed to seriously measure as the inside of the rim area is entirely, entirely, entirely different and could not take any internet measurements for granted.
    • If you are Ecutek tuned then these TCU tunes are anywhere from $550 to $700 usd. If you are not ECUTEK tuned, then it gets costly!
    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?
