Bloody Hell,

I just spent the day pullling bits off my engine - aiming to get the head off so I can assess the damage of a few months back. I didn't get as far as the head, but I got a fair way through.

I got the Plenum off - I wanted to understand what was inside the Hills custom plenum - nothing really interesting. Here's a few pics :

I also got the injectors and rails out - Does anyone know if they can hi-flo injectors when they are still on the rails ? Unfortunately it looks like the rail has been resting on the injectors as the little platic bit on the base of the injectors is broken on most of them - See what I mean ?

So after all my hard work, I have a bloody sore back , flithy fingernails and a shirt I can't wear again - Oh, well time for a beer:

I got the intake manifold off, but I can't see how you can get the turbo off - there are 4 bolts and 2 nuts on the dump pipe - to get at them is very awkward. And the bolts that old the turbo on to the exhast manifold are as tight as a nun. I don't want to bust anything so I have been real careful - What's the trick to getting the turbo off ???

B-man, dont see how they could be high flowed in the rail. Those holes look a bit larger than the holes in the bottom of the stock injector - bit wierd that all those platic bits are broken. I have been told that they are pretty cheap to replace, but good luck getting the injectors out of the rail.

The plenum isnt too much to look at is it. On the inside, you can see that they have radiused the top of the runners, but I definately expected better from them. They promised me bellmouthed runners, but didnt deliver that - as the old saying goes, 'buyer beware'.

Slugged me $895 with a second hand ford throttle body - then I had to post it back (at my expense) as they had put the wrong flange on it for the ford throttle body and the arm for the throttle cable was in the wrong spot.

When I got the plenum back (2 days later than they PROMISED), they had completely removed the arm for the throttle body so I had to get another welded on. Also the TPS was still the ford one, and had to be made to adapt up to the skyline one. They also said they were sorry but they had run out of studs to secure the plenum, and I could just drill those holes out. Also, the plenum needed to be refaced, as they had just used an oilstone after the final welding, and to quote 'its close enough'. I must be fussy, I didnt want close enough, I wanted 'as exact as possible'.

Me either - the reason I said that was because I tried getting the caps of the top of the injectors - again the screws were as tight as a nun - It didn't look like they had been taking off before as even my good phillips head made a bit of a bur on the heads of the screw - I even stripped one (I'll let the injector guys take that one out) - And the scress looked brand new when I took off the rail.

Me too - I asked what was in-side the plenum and they said that it was specially made up with bellmouth stuff. They wouldn't go into details as it was "intelectual property".

I didn't get a Throttle Position Sensor with the plenum - maybe because the 'package' included an EMS ECU ?

Now I am going back to a Power FC, I spose I'll have to get a new TPS too -

What a crock of teh proverbial.... Absolute P.O.S. guys....

Honestly cannot beleive the price you've both copped for this level of workmanship!?!?!?!

2rsimo, I can only agree 100%.

I was extremely disappointed. I was not sent what I was promised - not by a long shot. I bought the plenum because alot of guys had good things to say about the manufacturer, and when I enquired he promised the 'flows 95cfm per runner over stock, bellmouthed and radiused, flow tested even flow on all runners'

I am somewhat sceptical about all claims now. As soon as I can find the money, I will be upgrading.

Hopefully anybody dealing with them in the future will take something away from this thread, and perhaps not have the wool pulled over their eyes too.

Bottom line, make sure you get all promises in writing.

I would like to see that. A bog stock bare head flows about 94 CFM at 28 inches of water, so adding this trick plenum doubles cylinder head airflow. Ha ha ha.

Yeah, in your dreams only I am afraid. I bet these clowns do not even posses an airflow bench.

Plenum - "A condition, space, or enclosure in which air or other gas is at a pressure greater than that of the outside atmosphere."

ie The first pic in the above post.

It's the bit that the compressed air goes in after the turbo & intercooler but before the inlet manifold and head. The thing that looks like a funny looking clam shell on the top of your engine.

even their equal length runner exhaust manifold AINT even close to being equal lenght!!

What exactly is bad about this plenum? I'm not an expert on air flow but just looking at it it doesn't seem too bad.

B-Man, if you are still having problems getting the turbo off, have a read of this thread :D

If you can't get the exhaust nuts off, you might have to spray them with WD40 or something and let sit overnight. Don't be surprised if you end up snapping one or more studs off though, it is a common thing to happen on exhaust manifolds. Just be prepared for it. I was lucky with mine, the nuts on mine were actually not tight at all and came off easily. The oil and coolant lines were pretty tight, especially given the awkward positioning of them.

Thanks for the tip - I can't start my engine , so I might have to get the blowtorch out to heat it up a bit - I must remember to block the fuel lines off before I do that though :D

I won't be snapping any heads off though - I'm being ultra carefull with this process.

Re: Plenum - I'm no expert either, but from what I understand after doing some research (hindsight) - it is a very very complex art mixed with theory.

Apparently - plenum and intake dynamics are all about velocity, not so much volume.

Apparently, It's easy to slow the velocity of air - Very hard to speed it up. Hence tapered ram tubes with bellmouth ends.

To get velocity, you need distance so shortening the distance decreases velocity - Add a ram effect and you get a bit more velocity. If you increase diameters of stuff, you decrease the velocity.

I went to see a guy that was developing a new kind of RB plenum....

I spent 30 mins with this guy on the phone and 30 mins at his workshop - Nice guy - very helpful. Small workshop - Seperate machining room. Very much a custom perfectionist kind of guy - Easily distracted and very theortetical. Has a RB25 head and RB26 head there

His design principal is based on the tried & tested N/A method of tuned length ram tubes with bellmouthed ends, the tubes are tapered with sharp ends at the head - He reckons that Nissan got it all wrong with the head design :gofigure: . But what he said all made sense. (caviat: to me )

He doesn't use any of the standard inlet manifold, runners, etc - it's a complete fabrication from scratch - Must take him ages to put together. The bellmouth ends are enclosed in a cylinder plenum. A fuel rail for top feed injectors in included as is the water junction and all the idle controll stuff for the air con.

He reckons that it's all about the velocity of enough the air into the head - not so much the volume & pressure. He actually blanks off part of the intake port on the head to allow his narrow end ram tubes to do their bit - imagine a circle (the intake port on the head) then put a rectangle inside the circle - that how much he blanks off - He says it scares people of - but is just not required. Go figure. He says that the standard throttle body is plenty big enough , no need to change it. He reckons he has done the math (way beyond my small brain capacity)

In his design the throttle body mounts to the plenum from underneath. Go figure again ?? I wonder how the throttle cable will work.

He seems to know his stuff and I will definitely go back there to see the results of his first one - He's doing a before and after dyno run without changing anything else but the plenum and hopes to get 50HP more.

His design reminds me of the good ol days when a fuel injected big block had 8 massive ram tubes sticking out the bonnet - then imagine a plenum on the top, enclosing the 8 bellmouth ends, with forced air pressurising the plenum.

I think I'll get a GReddy Plenum/intake...........

    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
    • Also, I logged some data from the ECU for each session (mostly oil pressures and various temps, but also speed, revs etc, can't believe I forgot accelerator position). As the test sessions are mostly about the car, not me, I basically start by checking the oil pressure (good, or at least consistent all day). These have an electrically controlled oil pump which targets 25psi(!) at low load and 50 at high. I'm running a much thicker oil than recommended by nissan (they said 0w20, I'm running 10w40) so its a little higher. The main thing is that it doesn't drop too far, eg in the long left hand fish hook, or under brakes so I know I'm not getting oil surge. Good start. Then Oil and Coolant temp, plus intercooler and intake temps, like this: Keeping in mind ambient was about 5o at session 2, I'd say the oil temp is good. The coolant temp as OK but a big worry for hot days (it was getting to 110 back in Feb when it was 35o) so I need to keep addressing that. The water to air intercooler is working totally backwards where we get 5o air in the intake, squish/warm it in the turbos (unknown temp) then run it through the intercoolers which are say 65o max in this case, then the result is 20o air into the engine......the day was too atypical to draw a conclusion on that I think, in the united states of freedom they do a lot of upsizing the intercooler and heat exchanger cores to get those temps down but they were OK this time. The other interesting (but not concerning) part for me was the turbo speed vs boost graph: I circled an example from the main straight. With the tune boost peaks at around 18psi but it deliberately drops to about 14psi at redline because the turbos are tiny - they choke at high revs and just create more heat than power if you run them hard all the way. But you can also see the turbo speed at the same time; it raises from about 180,000rpm to 210,000rpm which the boost falls....imagine the turbine speed if they held 18psi to redline. The wastegates are electrically controlled so there is a heap of logic about boost target, actual boost, delta etc etc but it all seems to work well

Yes some vid from the day is up, here:  Note that as with all track day videos it is boring watching after the bloopers at the start.  The off was a genuine surprise to me, I've literally done a thousand laps around the place and I've never had instability there; basically it rolled into oversteer, slipped, gripped and spat me out. On the way off I mowed down one of the instructor's cones and it sat there all day looking at me with accusing cone eyes as I drove past. 1:13:20 was my fastest lap, and it was in the second session, 3rd lap.  It (or me!) got slower throughout the day as it got hotter.
