Christian I think you are doing a fantastic job

and don't mind the banners at all they sometimes even have interesting adds like cars i shouldn't be looking at all :P

ps. i wouldn't mind extra scrolling tbh and only thing way it affects me personally is that my beloved

My Blog · My Albums · My Controls · View New Posts · My Assistant · My Friends · 67 New Messages

links aren't on one line anymore (i run 1280x1024 at work and home)

edit: changed number of new messages so i look super duper popular

Hahaha, I didnt even notice that number of messages.

Thanks Zennon, that means a lot!

Yeah that line break bothers me too. I havve been thinking about moving the little banner to the left so everything it on one line again but I thought it would look too off centre...

Christian

Christian i think i speak for the majority of sau'ers when i say that if you do eventually make a profit off these forums then good! Why shouldn't you. It is a wealth of information (and gheyness in teh wasteland) like no other. And normally you would have to pay for what we get here for free

i am glad to donate as i am extremely gratefull for all the information, knowledge and even entertainment i have recieved on sau.

i say bring on teh ads! As long as they stay up top and down below then how can they possibly bother anyone?

and to anyone that thinks they are too good to have ads keeping their FREE forum alive... Boostcruisin's that way ~~~> !

edit: crap - forgot the change number of new messages

You know, i started this thread with the idea to change the banner to include more cars - the R35 for example.

I did not anticipate the arguments that would break out over it.

Im washing my hands of this and i will ask again, seeing as my post was deleted and the poll was changed to include something i did not type in, 2 basic things.

Firstly, how much does it actually cost to run a website? Surely not that much.

Secondly, whoever the mod was that screwed with my poll, kindly change it back immediately.

You as well as a few others may think its funny but its another example of how you manipulate the board to your own whims.

And im not impressed with it.

1. I dont get much change from $1000 per month. And the server is reaching capacity.

2. No idea who it was but I agree that it shouldnt have been changed.

3. Dont get so defensive. Discussions and arguments are good providing people dont take it to heart and a difference of opinion can be appreciated.

Thanks mate!! :P

Thanks for the reply Christian. Im not getting defensive simply because of the fact that what the discussion has turned into has nothing to do with what i originally implied.

What has got me frustrated is that if there is any heat being shelled out over this issue, people will automatically think i was the one who instigated it because im the thread starter. Whoever changed the poll hasnt made it any easier.

I will say one thing though and that is that by way of this thread, i suddenly felt the necessity to make a donation simply because of the fact that the website deserved it.

$1000 you say? hmm, where are most of those costs coming from Christian, id really like to know.

Hosting. Thats all hosting. The site generates close to 500GB of transfer monthly (thats why I cant host it in AU). The site weighs in at around 60GB of storage (Not including the db). Then there are both onsite and offsite backups (to the server, to Amazon's file storage service and to my local server).

It would be a lot more to put it on AU hosting although, its been on the cards a lot lately.

boo-hoo-hoo

for the record how did your poll differ from the new one? your options are still there aren't they? (top 2/3) just a few more options were added

  • Yes, change it immediately to the R35
  • No, i like the R34. Don't touch it.
  • I dont care, i like Russian cars.
  • What's a skyline? (for wastelanders only)
  • who thinks m3gtr has too much time on his hands and should keep these great "ideas" to himself?

That actually looks quite good.

you sounds surprised :P

^^ You did a good job by putting all the personal controls on one side.

So basically you have set up a personal conrtrol panel for the user instead of looking left and right to work out where everything is.

Cool!

I see. There arent any other ways to cut costs somehow? Why are you using Amazon anyway?

I actually think half a Terabyte each month isnt that bad but $1000 a month for the traffic?

Dude, number 5 was added by a mod, not me.

Nope, $1000 a month for a kick ass box, 10Mbit connection and 3 TB of data (that we only use 500GB of).

Amazon? They have an awesome network and we utilise their web services for high availability backups.

Good to see Christian coming out of the woodwork and shedding some light on the banner situation.

At the end of the day, it's his forum, it's his decision. If the ads are for profit, or just to keep the site afloat, that's his business.

If the changes to the site, like the ad/banner saga here, are bad choices and get in the way of enjoying SAU then people are likely to stop using this forum.

But i highly doubt that will happen. The banner is a VERY minor part of the SAU experience, and the opponents of the new banner (myself included) are complaining out of sentimentality. I personally thought the old banner looked good.

But running what is essentially a business, i'm sure Christian will agree, would be done with the least amount of sentiment possible.

Couldnt we have a little bit of excitement.

As in a GIF image, the S comes up flashes around abit.. Then AU comes up and abit of earth quake sensation and the AU cracks like plaster sits there for abit n then your done or repeat..

Yes. sounds great I think

lol so many topics have been raised.. on top of that.. christian has managed to turn everyone on his side lol

another benefit.. 95% of SAU members have quit smoking, bought a 300c, applied for personal loans and have got themselves outta debt.. B-E-A-UTIFUL

and as shan said.. if you make a profit then all good for you.. i mean people dont go around abusing boss's for making profits in their business..

    • Power is fed to the ECU when the ignition switch is switched to IGN, at terminal 58. That same wire also connects to the ECCS relay to provide both the coil power and the contact side. When the ECU sees power at 58 it switches 16 to earth, which pulls the ECCS relay on, which feeds main power into the ECU and also to a bunch of other things. None of this is directly involved in the fuel pump - it just has to happen first. The ECU will pull terminal 18 to earth when it wants the fuel pump to run. This allows the fuel pump relay to pull in, which switches power on into the rest of the fuel pump control equipment. The fuel pump control regulator is controlled from terminal 104 on the ECU and is switched high or low depending on whether the ECU thinks the pump needs to run high or low. (I don't know which way around that is, and it really doesn't matter right now). The fuel pump control reg is really just a resistor that controls how the power through the pump goes to earth. Either straight to earth, or via the resistor. This part doesn't matter much to us today. The power to the fuel pump relay comes from one of the switched wires from the IGN switch and fusebox that is not shown off to the left of this page. That power runs the fuel pump relay coil and a number of other engine peripherals. Those peripherals don't really matter. All that matters is that there should be power available at the relay when the key is in the right position. At least - I think it's switched. If it's not switched, then power will be there all the time. Either way, if you don't have power there when you need it (ie, key on) then it won't work. The input-output switching side of the relay gains its power from a line similar (but not the same as) the one that feeds the ECU. SO I presume that is switched. Again, if there is not power there when you need it, then you have to look upstream. And... the upshot of all that? There is no "ground" at the fuel pump relay. Where you say: and say that pin 1 Black/Pink is ground, that is not true. The ECU trigger is AF73, is black/pink, and is the "ground". When the ECU says it is. The Blue/White wire is the "constant" 12V to power the relay's coil. And when I say "constant", I mean it may well only be on when the key is on. As I said above. So, when the ECU says not to be running the pump (which is any time after about 3s of switching on, with no crank signal or engine speed yet), then you should see 12V at both 1 and 2. Because the 12V will be all the way up to the ECU terminal 18, waiting to be switched to ground. When the ECU switches the fuel pump on, then AF73 should go to ~0V, having been switched to ground and the voltage drop now occurring over the relay coil. 3 & 5 are easy. 5 is the other "constant" 12V, that may or may not be constant but will very much want to be there when the key is on. Same as above. 3 goes to the pump. There should never be 12V visible at 3 unless the relay is pulled in. As to where the immobiliser might have been spliced into all this.... It will either have to be on wire AF70 or AF71, whichever is most accessible near the alarm. Given that all those wires run from the engine bay fusebox or the ECU, via the driver's area to the rear of the car, it could really be either. AF70 will be the same colour from the appropriate fuse all the way to the pump. If it has been cut and is dangling, you should be able to see that  in that area somewhere. Same with AF71.   You really should be able to force the pump to run. Just jump 12V onto AF72 and it should go. That will prove that the pump itself is willing to go along with you when you sort out the upstream. You really should be able to force the fuel pump relay on. Just short AF73 to earth when the key is on. If the pump runs, then the relay is fine, and all the power up to both inputs on the relay is fine. If it doesn't run (and given that you checked the relay itself actually works) then one or both of AF70 and AF71 are not bringing power to the game.
    • @PranK can you elaborate further on the Colorlock Dye? The website has a lot of options. I'm sure you've done all the research. I have old genuine leather seats that I have bought various refurbing creams and such, but never a dye. Any info on how long it lasts? Does it wash out? Is it a hassle? What product do I actually need? Am I just buying this kit and following the steps the page advises or something else? https://www.colourlockaustralia.com.au/colourlock-leather-repair-kit-dye.html
    • These going to fit over the big brakes? I'd be reeeeeeeeaaaall hesitant to believe so.
    • The leather work properly stunned me. Again, I am thankful that the leather was in such good condition. I'm not sure what the indent is at the top of the passenger seat. Like somebody was sitting in it with a golf ball between their shoulders. The wheels are more grey than silver now and missing a lot of gloss.  Here's one with nice silver wheels.
    • It's amazing how well the works on the leather seats. Looks mint. Looking forward to see how you go with the wheels. They do suit the car! Gutter rash is easy to fix, but I'm curious about getting the colour done.
