So what should the line be? 4cyl only? or should it be a power to weight ratio? like, you can drive a big arse V8 as long as it weighs a tonne (well over a tonne, cos a tonne is pretty light for a V8)?

turbo's allowed? no turbos? should it be car age related? the fast cars of yesteryear don't really compare to the family wagons of today that well...

has there been a poll done?

What needs to be done is the Road Safety Council, the Government, the RAC and maybe some other car body get together and work out a list of cars and vehicle requirements that P-platers shouldn't be allowed to drive. We know there are some quick N/A 4cylinders out there (Honda S2k, Integra / Civic Type R, Pulsar SSS for example), however they need to take everything into account such as safety / safety features and not just engine size or power to weight.

what i ment was big zorsts and caps sideways with the signature Vtec yo!

Sometimes I wish I was a ricer still, as there is no such thing as Rice Laws. I'd still have my license if I had more doof than hp at the wheels hahaha. *sigh*.

Everyone should start off being ricers imo, and not trying to be Paul Walker. I remember back in the Rollaboyz period, most of the guys were just into stereos and neons. Even TJ was a stereo man himself back around then!! They were good days I must say :glare:

from another forum

P plater deaths on the road 16

full license deaths on the road = 150+

it all comes down to how much of a dick you are to put YOUR BEST MATES LIFE AT STAKE. its got nothing to do with p platers and full licenseds drivers.

Ok, take the number of P plate drivers and multiply it so it equals the number of full licensed drivers on the road.

I'm sure the P plate death amount will be way more than the full license drivers.

The whole point the Government is making is the waste of young life on the roads.

(Do note however, there is likely to be an election in October too so all this stuff is just going to be election winning tactics for Carps when it comes voting time [increase hoon penalties, P plate restrictions etc just watch how the Government treat this now].

As a Road Safety member discussed with me two weeks ago, its not just the deaths but the serious injuries caused from accidents as well that don't get noted. He said kids aren't afraid of dying, but they sure are afraid of drinking food from a straw the rest of their life.

then on Friday night, commodore lost it at high speeds, hitting a pole, chopped it in half and throwing a girl in the back seat into on coming traffic (A Subaru WRX) which chopped of her leg.

Crazy weekend I tell yah..

This wasnt at North Lake was it, near Leech Hwy? Supposedly someone hit a pole, took it out and the roads were closed for a while that night.

"A $6,000 supercharger setup" and "the race-preped vehicle" were 2 phrases I heard on the news and lol'd at.

I think the problem is people are just idiots.

I had 2k to buy my first car, the R31, which I then swapped for the Z31. The cars have 114kw & 120kw respectively when new, so they're both slower than the main car I learnt in and drive now (mums magna, because my car is always broken lol).

I learnt in a 3.5L 150kw magna with bald RE92's. It was f**king suicidal to drive in the wet, and even in the dry it was a bitch. I learnt fast in that thing lol. Not the best idea, but we couldn't afford to do anything about the tyres and mum was too scared to drive it lol. I also did about 25,000klms in the 1 year & 1 day that I was on L's. I think that should be the same for everyone.

The other day in the wet, it understeered like a flamin mongrel! As in, I was on full lock left, and it was still going straight. I managed to bring the car back into line based pretty much on my experience of driving it back when it had the bald RE92's on it lol.

I also think you learn quicker if you understand how a car works.

Sorry if that's a bit nonsensical but I'm tired lol.

Edit: Lulz @ swear filter.

I'm starting to think they should restrict the f**k out of us.

Why? Too many news sites perhaps lol.

Either way, a stock NA Z31 isn't exactly a performance car anyway, with a shocking 120kw when new haha. Same goes for the 114kw R31 skyline. Even an NA R33 is a gutless 150kw when new iirc. 150kw feels like alot for the first few months or so, then it just feels slow (the magna I learnt in is a good example of this). I'm quite happy to stay with 120kw until I'm off my P's, although one thing I hate is that this law would presumably mean no modifications at all, which means shitty stock suspension & brakes, and no LPG conversion.

Power to weight laws for P plater ftw! Bringing us inline with over east.

I know you young guys don't wanna hear that, but trust me, learn you driving skills in a decent low to mid powered car first.

Then when time allows, you'll get your high-po car, and you'll have the skills to drive it, without being a statistic(or you passenger).

lolz @ rollaboyz... mate was a member with an excel... he now has a killer R31 that has more juice than my GTR, I'll spare his identity tho :glare:

Cars don't kill people - people do!

Its all about attitude and respect and understanding of the consequences of your actions.

Agreed. But allowing people to jump straight into a performance car is stupid.

Bubba as for the 100kw NA 4 cylinder argument when was the last time you punted a westfield or such around. 100 kw can go damn fast if you put it in the right chassis. Think about the 250cc Motorbike limit for new licence holders - ever pushed a performace 2 stroke 250 hard. Its not the answer, bandaid maybe but not the answer. :D

That isn't the point. I know it's just as easy to kill yourself in ANY car, including lopo family cars aswell as hipo imports.

My point is, there should be STEPPING STONES, as opposed to letting a fresh driver jump in something hipo'd.

Another personal belief is that we should make EVERY new driver ride a scooter for the first 12 months. That will certainly give them an appreciation for the large masses of fast moving metal they share the road with.

Driver education needs to be approached in a smart, sensible manner. The first step of which is to limit NEW drivers to no hipo'd cars as to NOT do so is just a recipe for disaster.

YES, it's not a cure but at least it's a start. Couple it with more extensive driver training and we might actually get somewhere!

Well, when my kids get their licence, laws nonwithstanding, I would like to see them spend their first 12 months behind the wheel of a 1954 Desoto repowered with a 120Y engine and gearbox... :D

Scooters? Have you seen the death rate for bike/scooter riders? fck that... give em all some fwd colts... worked for me, handbreakys on dirtroads ftw.

Oh wait what we talking about? oh yeah. Um yeah, buy a rollcage & good seat belts kids, especially if your a 16yr old girl.

Im a freakin P plater with a turbo'd car, Have i crashed yet no? coz ino how to handle my car,And drive resposibly. Its these new 16 yr old straight off there L's from the city and there Mummy n Daddys buy them V8's n sh!t, and then they go out with there mates and show off, and write there cars off... Thats nothing to do with Us P platers, Ive seen 30 yr old do the same freaking thing! Not a complete ban to all P platers! but maybe some sorta month thing, like the red n green plates... IM still voting No!

Oh and ive seen some 4cyl cars anihate skylines, and commodore ss's, So even if they wanted a ban, you cant stop the mods!

N/A 4cyls? not many of those around that would spank a turbo6 or v8.

And responsibly? didn't you get hoon lawed?

I think maturity has alot to do with it.

Its have the brains to stop and think and realise that spinning the wheels up, racing the car on the street and just generally acting like a d*ck on the road is not acceptable and if you want to do this, you have to face up to the consequence if you get caught.

While I realise that people more then likely will just mod their car anyway or just drive a v8/turbo, thats their risk to take.

I can certainly relate to people who say that they already drive a V8 or turbo and they are on their P's, as did my L's in a V8, and held my full 2yrs of P's driving a V8 and nvr had a accident and only got 1 speeding fine, but unfortunately not everyone is as smart as some of us, and therefore the government has to cater for everyone.

When it boils down to it, if the government decides to do it all you can do is suck it in, stop whinging about it and just deal with it. Not everything in life can go your way.

2 years of driving a non turbo/v8 or however they want to distinguish it certainly wont do any damage and on the bright side it will save you a sh!t load on fuel! =)

we def need restrictions on P platers... ffs, who in their right mind would allow a new driver to get behind the wheel of anything powerful or worked is just beyond me... RIP to the passenger

Parents these days just have no friggen idea... or don't care? I just don't get it.

wtf?

as said previously its all driver training not what you drive

should implement a licensing system like japan or germany

also make it so you only get 6 demerit points like eastern states

be 99% fewer dickheads and 100% safer roads

what happens if they do restrict P platers, to people like my wife and i, we only have skylines, both turbos with very mild mods, she's on her P's (only just got them, she's 34 so not to worried about her doing stupid things), do i then have to sell one of them/buy another car, just cause others have been stupid/unlucky ???

It really depends on how they plan to implement the new laws if they do bring them in. Whether they decide to apply them retroactively to existing P platers or not, you'll just have to live with it or maybe apply for a special exemption.

Not to say that the majority of p platers drive like idiots, but the ones we do notice are those that either are acting like dickheads or killing people.

P plates only go for two years anyway, which isn't really that long to wait in the grand scheme of things. But if new policies/restrictions would save even a few lives it would be worth it.

I wouldn't want to lose family and friends that way if it could be helped.

PS. And they should make everyone drive a scooter/motorbike or pillion for a week when getting their licence so that they are more aware of traffic. Honestly the amount of ppl who just don't look for a motorbike when changing lanes... Grrr... is it really THAT HARD to check your blind spot/mirrors?

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day
    • While I was waiting for the new parts to come in for the charge pipe and radiator I decided to do some turbo modification. The drive pressure (exhaust backpressure) was a lot higher that I thought it should be. For 32lbs of boost drive was 55lbs. The turbine housing is a 1.10AR and my turbo builder has suggested to go to a 1.25AR. To test if a larger AR would do anything to reduce drive pressure AND not spend any money I decided to hog out the divider in my current housing. I removed it from the inlet and the whole way through the housing.  After reassembly and testing it doesn't look like this modification did anything for reducing drive pressure or requiring more fuel (making more power). Oh well, it was worth a shot. We'll get some data at the track if it makes it past the 60ft. I also machined a $7 shift knob off Amazon to fit my Stillway shifter since I didn't like the Stillway shift knob. Next on the list was the radiator replacement and fabrication of a new intercooler tube that had no silicon coupler. No pictures of this - I was short on time each night after work to get this done and didn't stop to take pictures.  Next was to get the clutch disks out and replaced. Previously when installing the dogbox I had ordered a set of the same sintered iron disks I had been running because I switched to the 26-spline input shaft. I thought it was odd that they didn't have any markings or brand name on them like all my old disks had but installed them anyway. At the track I could not get the clutch to lock up using my normal strategies. After two track nights I reached out to the clutch manufacturer and ask their thoughts. They said they had to switch the material out because they were having trouble getting the original material and that this new material would not take to being slipped very well.  So out with the first set of 26-spline disks and in with the correct material 26-spline disks. While I had the trans out I added an inspection/service hole. I've wanted one of these for a while. Now I can have a look at things and change the front cover shimming when needed (clutch wear). I hustled and got the clutch change done in a few hours on a Saturday. Hopped in the car and drove home. On the way home I did a 1-3 pull. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd the core plug in the back of the cylinder head popped out and dumped all the coolant. Thankfully I was only 30 seconds from home and coasted it there. Datalog showed nothing unusual and 2.5psi of coolant pressure. That plug has been in there since 1992 but I guess it worked its way out. Pulled the trans AGAIN and replaced the plug, JB welded it in, and made a brace. Also deleted the head drain I had added in during the bearing issue fiasco.  I am currently changing my boost control plumbing to make it cleaner. After that is done I'll make another attempt at getting past the 60.
    • Are you 100% sure this isn't tune related?
    • 140-150 across the board. At this point hoping the grounding harness fixes it. My grounds are all tied to the chassis and none to the battery. For SR and KA that’s never been a problem for me but had a few other guys here and Reddit who told me RB really like a very solid ground setup tied to the battery so going to try that next, I’m stumped if that doesn’t do it. Never had a car have spark and fuel and not fire off before. Only thing I can think is the spark is intermittent/weak because of grounds nothing else really makes sense at this point
    • I am having close to the same issue. Can you help me with what wire you grounded to get your pump to trigger?
