Wanting To Get A Ps3

Been jumping around the internet on both play-asia.com and ebay and have found that ps3's can be had for as little as $450 brand new.

The catch is that its an overseas model in NTSC Format with an overseas warranty (most cases they are japanese models).

What this means is that they will only play region 1 dvd's and blu ray movies.. ive been lead to believe that all blu ray movies are unlocked (region free) so this wont matter for them unless this changes in the future.. however the dvd's i will not be able to watch.

Is it possible to change region on a ps3? also does anyone no if they plan on keeping blu ray's region free.

Would love to hear from anyone who has purchased one of these NTSC systems and can tell me about there experiences.

i have a j-spec ps3.

some blu-ray movies are region locked already (rented afew form the video shop the other week and some didnt work).

You could try and pick one up on ebay used/near new/brand new from people selling when they receive it from the sony buy a tv get a ps3 giveaway thing... for around the $500-$550 mark....

I'd stick to Aus released, unless you don't mind maybe needing to resell it if it won't work right....

In theory you should be able to unlock the region code somehow.

I think (really don't know for sure) that everything in oz is PAL not NTSC..

I bought a japanese PS3 at launch in japan. but in the end I wanted to ensure I could watch aussie dvds and aussie blu-ray, and I wanted to play my old aussie ps2 games too. so in the end I sold the japanese one smartly and bought an aussie 60gb one. I'm happy with it. yeah it costs more, but for me it does more.

thanks for all the reply's ppl guess i got some thinking to do cus im gonna be selling my only dvd player (my xbox 360) to get this too. So im thinkin i should just shell out the 50-100 odd extra bucks and get a pal version

Only difference is the hard drive space... might aswell buy the 40GB model and whack in a 250GB, 320GB or in the near future a 500GB HDD

The other thing to keep in mind with a JP or US PS3 is that they are 110v & not he 220/240v we have, so you need a transformer of some sort.

Did your ps2 games ran fine on the AU PS3? Coz from a article I read on a PC mag, they said that the PAL PS3s have the worst PS2 backward compatibility of the 3 regions, as Sony removed a hardware chip that was designed to run the PS2 games & instead switched the PS3 to software emulation mode for ps2 games in order to save cost & this resulted in killing the backward compatibility of ps2 games.

PS3 games are regional free, so if your a gamer then it doesnt matter, but if you buying the ps3 for Blurays movies....then I'll def getting a Pal version other wise you have to buy most of you blueray online

selling the 360 because im getting sick of the games on it and there are some games im really keen to play on ps3. Also i think the future line up of games looks better than on xbox

Id say grab the 40gb Japanese version.

Yeah most BD movies are region locked, but FYI its cheaper to import the BD movies from the US from Amazon, and they come out sooner in the US.

I bought I Am Legend, The Departed, The Last Samurai and 300 from Amazon.com, delivered to my door for a little less than $100 inc. postage. thats less than $25 per BD movie. what do you pay here? $35+? and again, the movies are released earlier in the states on BD than here in in AUS.

Ofcourse there will eventually be an update sent out to make BluRay region free (whether official or unofficial), but ive got no idea when that would be... Ive heard though that some BD movies are infact region free, you just need to check... thats if you want to pay $35+ for a BD movie...

Id only consider getting a 60gb console if you plan on playing PS2 games (alternatively, you could just pick up a PS2 and mod it if needed?).

And id only consider getting a 40gb AUS PS3 if you genuinely want to waste your money. Unless you can find a cheap new PS3 or if you wanted to get a cheap used PS3.

Ive had mine since March and have had no problems. My mate has had his since December and had no problems (both White Japanese 40gb ver.).

In the end, its up to you and how much money you want to spend/waste.

I was thinking along similar lines to you until i realised that i wouldnt be able to play aussie dvd's with my ntsc ps3 cus im selling my only dvd player, nor would i be able to hire dvd's or bluray movies. So its either buy a dvd player or get a pal ps3.. the pal ps3 works out cheaper.
