Hey Guys,

I am sure this is out there somewhere but I have been searching for ages with no luck! Basically I would like to rebuild my GTR at some stage. I want to do a full rebuild, mostly for strengthening so I can get some more power out of her and so I know that there are good quality parts in there and what stage they are at. I don't plan to wait until I break it, this is something I want to do in my own time when I am ready and when I am prepared (well hopefully this will be before I break it!).

So basically I'm just after a full list of parts that are required. I have seen various people's posts but they don't go into huge detail. I'm not after opinions on brands or parts at this stage, just a lost of parts themselves. Will research into certain bits as required when I find out what they all are. Figure I can slowly start purchasing and accumulating stuff :(

Any help will be greatly appreciated, I'm the first to admit that I don't know shit about this sort of stuff just yet, I learn as I go!

Cheers,

Kat

You forgot piston rings... :rofl:

Advice from someone who's learnt a few lessons the hard way and is home sick from work today with heaps of spare time for a long post;

Save up the cash, not the parts. Parts are becoming cheaper and cheaper. It wouldnt be very smart to buy pistons now ($1200 for CP's) for the sake of saying you've got them if you dont build the car for another year (when they'll be less than $1200) For example when i was thinking along the same lines as you CP's were $1500 for the set inc rings, but when i bought a set they were $1200, so i saved 300 by waiting, which paid for all the bearings

To put it simply, here's a list of parts i would buy before the motor comes out;

-Turbos (stock ones on mine were good to 262rwkw, but pretty fkd when pulled off. Go for a few drives in friends GTR's to suss out turbos, if you like the twins just get some 2860r-5's)

-Rods (Eagle, Carillo, PAR, Pauter, Tomei, JUN, HKS, SPOOL are all popular. Get Eagles, they're cheap and work fine)

-Oil pump (N1, JUN, Tomei, Nismo, Dry sump. N1 is popular, so is JUN)

-Manifolds (dont really need them, but if money's not an issue....HKS, Mines, Tomei)

-Dumps (HKS, Tomei, Mines, JustJap. Nows a great time to go for these as the motor will be out soon)

-Valve springs (Heaps of brands, popular choice is Tomei type A and B's)

-Tomei oil restrictor, only one version, under $30 delivered

-Sump baffles, again Tomei are most popular here

-Cam gears (adjustable, HKS make pretty ones)

-Water pump, N1

Leave the rest for once the motor is out, the above list should feed your craving to shop for a while, and by the time you've bought it all, you'll know what most GTR owners mean when they say its not cheap to build one :P

What do you mean? - Of course he needs a new crank... Along with the rest of the JUN 2.8L stroker kit :P

Money's not his problem?

HKS step 3 kit, full HKS parts through the head, GTRS turbo kit

Money will be a problem after that :P

LOL she is a she!!!!

Yes nice to see some girls with GTRs around!! I've had mine nearly 3 years now, hence getting the bug to make it better!

Thankyou for the advice! Shall take it all on board. I'm basically compiling a list of everything I want to change and then I'll do some interim pricing and decide what's best to do now and what's best for when the engine is out.

I like brand names and yes I know its not going to be cheap! We have a "GTR Fund" that's currently being worked on!

Turbos are already done, they died few months back... Stocky turbos didn't like a full bar, I had about 3 days out of it before one went... Ooops :) Got the rest of the usual shit, apexi pods, power fc, boost controller, exhaust done already. And importantly I have a pretty new Grille that is on its way with Australia post at the moment!

Oh, she IS a she :blink:

Got a pic of your car?

Seems like you've got your head screwed on correctly, the best advice any GTR owner could give to another is: Ask for more advice!

There's a wealth of information out there about all aspects of these things, and it never hurts to ask a question. If you're not going for mega power your build will cost significantly less which is great for your gtr fund. Have you got an idea of power you'd like? Like was it fast enough on stock turbos at 1bar? Or does it need more than that to keep you happy - if so, approx how much faster should it be to keep you satisfied? There's a heap of saving to be had if the power goal isnt stratospheric ;)

Come to the texikhana at sutton road and have a go there, i found out that by driving at off road events (tracks) i quickly realized where my gtr needed money spent, and where it didnt

Haha yes she is :blink:

Yes I find it's silly to charge ahead and try to figure it all out myself or pretend I know it all! I'm really new at this and there's no point reinventing the wheel there's a lot of people that have been there before!

I've made a big list of stuff that I've given to the boys at Autotech to look at. From there I'll choose what I want parts wise and then decide on a plan of attack.

As for turbos I am still in two minds... Somtimes I have the feeling I went for the wrong ones.... Got the Garrett 2860R-7s and I do still have in the back of my mind should have got the -5s... In saying that I'll leave em on and do the rebuild etc and push them a bit and see what they can do. I guess that response will tell you that stocky turbos at one bar weren't enough!

I don't intend to be a dyno queen or anything like that but I think I'll be happy when I end up with somewhere around 350kw at all four wheels. I guess at that point it's definately time to upgrade brakes too. I think once it's fast enough I shall know when I get there. It bugs me to no end to know that at at the moment its at 280rwkw but it's max is 300rwkw yet I can't drive it at that because the injectors are fully maxed and it's going to break stuff.

I keep meaning to go check out these texikhana and motorkhana things. I was bad, last time I was hungover and in no state to drive but I may very well go check out the next one.

Here's some piccies, forgot to post these in here but some of you may have seen them on CC or in the R32 pics thread. I've changed the mangled number plates and I have my new grille sitting on the loungeroom floor waiting to be fitted.

White hey, good choice! Here's mine;

Whats wrong with your grille? Id add a few N1 parts and be done with it. Looks like a very clean car you've got there :O

I doubt -7's will do 350awkw, although i may be wrong - have a look in the RB26 results thread. Seems the guys with -7's are getting 300awkw without issues and the response is awesome.

350kw atw is a great feeling (mine did 355 before letting go, being rebuilt now, will do more than 400 this time round), pretty much nothing on the street can keep up. Traction is actually an issue if you're hard up it :blink:

Dont forget the fuel system, the easiest way out of that problem: 044 in tank (yes it fits and works fine), new FPR (nismo or sard), new injectors (700cc's), standard fuel rail. No need for a new fuel rail unless you're after some "bling"

The brakes - i thought the stockers would be ok for a while while i decided what to replace them with. Wrong :P They just plain old suck with that power. I have zero confidence in the sumitumo's after upping the power and wouldnt recommend anyone keeps them when at that level of power. Ive now sourced some new brakes that will stop it quickly enough;

Front:

-APRacing 6 pot monoblock calipers

-375mm discs

Rear:

-APRacing 4 pot calipers

-330mm discs

Problem is though, they cost well more than most people spend on engine mods. An easy upgrade for the R32 gtr is the R33 brembo's, there's pretty much always a set for around 2k, but i think they should be much cheaper through the right people. May be worth your while sending a PM to Mr Zac, he's an importer. Or to Lawrence, he's an ex pat in Japan, and he's VERY helpful :(

Next weakest link would be the gearbox, worry about that when/if it breaks - not cheap though which is a shame. Id be VERY suprised if there isnt a huge markup in gearsets

Then enjoy the thing ;)

EDIT: Looks like you've got the original badge on there aswel - thats pretty cool, not many do these days

Thats a bloody clean looking GTR Kat. Kudos to you keepin it so clean. Sounds like it's going to be a project and a half for you guys.

Mines collecting dust lol, and I'm having withdrawals not driving it.

Wipe that dirty arse Steve. Oh and if you had got the pistons through me it would have cost you $835 :blink:

    • I had 3 counts over the last couple of weeks once where i got stranded at a jdm paint yard booking in some work. 2nd time was moving the car into the drive way for the inspection and the 3rd was during the inspection for the co2 leak test. Fix: 1st, car off for a hour and half disconnected battery 10mins 4th try car started 2nd, 5th try started 3rd, countless time starting disconnected battery dude was under the hood listening to the starting sequence fuel pump ect.
    • This. As for your options - I suggest remote mounting the Nissan sensor further away on a length of steel tube. That tube to have a loop in it to handle vibration, etc etc. You will need to either put a tee and a bleed fitting near the sensor, or crack the fitting at the sensor to bleed it full of oil when you first set it up, otherwise you won't get the line filled. But this is a small problem. Just needs enough access to get it done.
    • The time is always correct. Only the date is wrong. It currently thinks it is January 19. Tomorrow it will say it is January 20. The date and time are ( should be ! ) retrieved from the GPS navigation system.
    • Buy yourself a set of easy outs. See if they will get a good bite in and unthread it.   Very very lucky the whole sender didn't let go while on the track and cost you a motor!
    • Well GTSBoy, prepare yourself further. I did a track day with 1/2 a day prep on Friday, inpromptu. The good news is that I got home, and didn't drive the car into a wall. Everything seemed mostly okay. The car was even a little faster than it was last time. I also got to get some good datalog data too. I also noticed a tiny bit of knock which was (luckily?) recorded. All I know is the knock sensors got recalibrated.... and are notorious for false knock. So I don't know if they are too sensitive, not sensitive enough... or some other third option. But I reduced timing anyway. It wasn't every pull through the session either. Think along the lines of -1 degree of timing for say, three instances while at the top of 4th in a 20 minute all-hot-lap session. Unfortunately at the end of session 2... I noticed a little oil. I borrowed some jack stands and a jack and took a look under there, but as is often the case, messing around with it kinda half cleaned it up, it was not conclusive where it was coming from. I decided to give it another go and see how it was. The amount of oil was maybe one/two small drops. I did another 20 minute session and car went well, and I was just starting to get into it and not be terrified of driving on track. I pulled over and checked in the pits and saw this: This is where I called it, packed up and went home as I live ~20 min from the track with a VERY VERY CLOSE EYE on Oil Pressure on the way home. The volume wasn't much but you never know. I checked it today when I had my own space/tools/time to find out what was going on, wanted to clean it up, run the car and see if any of the fittings from around the oil filter were causing it. I have like.. 5 fittings there, so I suspected one was (hopefully?) the culprit. It became immediately apparent as soon as I looked around more closely. 795d266d-a034-4b8c-89c9-d83860f5d00a.mp4       This is the R34 GTT oil sender connected via an adapter to an oil cooler block I have installed which runs AN lines to my cooler (and back). There's also an oil temp sensor on top.  Just after that video, I attempted to unthread the sensor to see if it's loose/worn and it disintegrated in my hand. So yes. I am glad I noticed that oil because it would appear that complete and utter catastrophic engine failure was about 1 second of engine runtime away. I did try to drill the fitting out, and only succeeded in drilling the middle hole much larger and now there's a... smooth hole in there with what looks like a damn sleeve still incredibly tight in there. Not really sure how to proceed from here. My options: 1) Find someone who can remove the stuck fitting, and use a steel adapter so it won't fatigue? (Female BSPT for the R34 sender to 1/8NPT male - HARD to find). IF it isn't possible to remove - Buy a new block ($320) and have someone tap a new 1/8NPT in the top of it ($????) and hope the steel adapter works better. 2) Buy a new block and give up on the OEM pressure sender for the dash entirely, and use the supplied 1/8 NPT for the oil temp sender. Having the oil pressure read 0 in the dash with the warning lamp will give me a lot of anxiety driving around. I do have the actual GM sensor/sender working, but it needs OBD2 as a gauge. If I'm datalogging I don't actually have a readout of what the gauge is currently displaying. 3) Other? Find a new location for the OEM sender? Though I don't know of anywhere that will work. I also don't know if a steel adapter is actually functionally smart here. It's clearly leveraged itself through vibration of the motor and snapped in half. This doesn't seem like a setup a smart person would replicate given the weight of the OEM sender. Still pretty happy being lucky for once and seeing this at the absolute last moment before bye bye motor in a big way, even if an adapter is apparently 6 weeks+ delivery and I have no way to free the current stuck/potentially destroyed threads in the current oil block.
