yes they will make a big difference. i run them on my bike. you could even go skinnier if you wanted. i run michelin 26 x 1.4's on my bike. they are a more expensive tyre because they have a layer of plastic between the tread and the canvas to prevent punctures. you are looking at about $40+ for one of them though. but you can run them at 90psi, which also helps you roll faster. the stock tyres on the altitude you can only run up to about 60psi.

and a 24" frame? how tall are you???? must be pretty tall to ride a 24". i find even the 22" frames feel big.

and that reminds me. i should go build some altitudes because i sold all the ones i had on the floor. pity you weren't in qld though, cause i am selling the altitudes for $400 (09 models though, which are pretty much identical to the 2010 model, just different colour)

hey there is/was a sticker on my wheels when i got the altitude that specified 26x1.5-1.95 so I'm assuming that means minimum 1.5" width..how strict are these specifications? I might try the michelins instead of these cheapies as the cheapies are innova and can only go up to 65psi like the 1.95" knobbys which is strange. What's the model name/number for the michelins??

I'm 6'5" hence the big frame ..

michelin city are what they are called. you will also need some smaller tubes. i use 26 x 1.25 tubes. the only other thing i would recommend is upgrading the rim tapes. i have had a few tubes let go because of the rim tape allowing the tube to balloon into the nipple holes and pop. i use a cloth rim tape and it solves the problem, but you could run a few layers of electrical tape under then rubber rim tape and that should do the job.

the sizing on the rims doesn't mean shit. cherie has the same rims on her bike and she runs 26 x 1. they are the same width as a road bike tyre.

just ordered 2 x Continental City Contact 26x1.5 tyres and 5 tubes/levers from wiggle.co.uk with free shipping ..total $91 Best price I could find on that tyre locally was $59 for just 1 tyre Hopefully it doesn't take more than a couple of weeks to get it.

yeah aussie prices suck compared to overseas prices. the UK price is probably close to wholesale price here. in fact i just checked my emails and i have a pricelist for the conti tyres. rrp is $59, wholesale is $29+gst. so even if i was to do them at cost price, by the time they get sent to me and then i sent them to you, you would be looking at over $80, so for you to get tubes, etc for that price is good.

but it shows how much the aussie distributors need to lift their game.

also it says on the wiggle site that they are currently out of stock of those tyres.

mate - before i started riding i tipped the scales at 130 kg - granted i didn't smoke

but also take note of this

before i started riding, i did a "bit" of exercise, ate healthilly the entire time but couldn't shift the weight

i started riding on a cheap entry level mountain bike n got bit by the bug... everything about it - the speeds you travel, the fact it's YOU doing the effort. everything

if that *thing* about riding "bites" you.. then you'll start looking for any excuse to ride... going out on your lunchbreak, going out after work, using the bike to ride to the shop, the gym, to the video shop, whatever... before you know it - your breathing will increase - smoking or not, who knows? perhaps you might wanna smoke a bit less - if you don't... no biggie, and you'll also notice the kilo's falling off too =)

FYI - i've now been riding "more than casually" for about 14 months. and i've lost 30 kilos.

that's a good effort, congrats =)

Yeah I'm quitting the smokos ... used to be much healthier 2 years ago until I got a semi serious shoulder injury at the gym (was a gym junky / cardio + weight sessions almost daily) I do enjoy riding but the smokes are definately killing my lungs and need to go if I'm going to get anywhere.

I'm lucky in that I did quite a bit of cardio until 2 years ago (daily 40-60 mins on the gym bikes at pretty hard levels) so I'm familiar with the pain process and I know it's not gonna be so hard forever. I can't wait to get my slicks delievered though, the knobby tyres are a bit of a drag on the street really

if you want heart rate then the polar computers are the way to go but they are bloody expensive. cheaper option would be a more basic unit and a heart rate monitor. if you are wanting heart rate then you are obviously interested in fitness, so you would want to go a computer with cadence as well as speed as your cadence will play a bigger part to achieving your heartrate goals than speed. something like the cateye strada cadence would be my suggestion. it's what i use with my bike on the mag trainer. it is a wired computer but they also do a wireless version called the strada double wireless. i'm not a huge fan of wireless though. about the only only wireless computer i've had a good experience with is a pro computer, the same as what jase uses. i think from memory the strada cadence sells for about $90RRP, but it's been about 6 months since i saw the price, and the prices have changed (gone both up and down) since then.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
