so, put the car on the hoist the other day to put on some R33 calipers and the bolts are different. old bolts too big for caliper, R33 bolts too small for mounting bracket. what have people done to overcome this problem?

lol. i'm in the same boat as you at the moment. over the last few weeks i've been sizing them up to see what changes are needed and this is one of them. i've read on here that 33 calipers bolt straight onto S1 stagea's, is yours a S2, mine is, and it wont bolt straight up. The Stagea bolt is a fine thred M14 and the R33 a fine thred M12 (i haven't put a thred gauge on it yet to check the pitch). I've been looking at two options.

1. Drill and Tap the R33 caliper out to M14, it looks as though there is enough meat in the threded inset to do this, need to check properly though.

2. Turn up a small sleave in the lathe that will take the hole in the Stagea Hub for the caliper down to 12mm so the caliper locates properly. if i do this i'm sure i'll need longer bolts aswell.

sorry i dont have a definate answer of "this is what to do", but just a couple of ideas i've been looking into.

i'd personally run sleeves as it's a non permanent option if you ever decide to revert/sell the calipers

i've got a pair of BNR34 brembo calipers and pads for sale here if anyone is interested? the mount holes on the calipers are M14 :rofl:

I just used the 33 bolts, ran some race tape around the bolt shank to locate them in the centre of the holes, and did them up nice and tight. Has been on for about 18 months of thrashing so far without problems.

got Maltech SS braided lines at 4 corners

front DBA slotted rotors

master cylinder stopper

bendix advance and heavy duty pads

Went down to the local reece plumbing, found a copper sleve that was the right diameter. cut it down, bashed it in, filled it flush.

yeh i've been told R34 stuff will bolt straight up but i got a full set of 33 calipers and rotors nice and cheap.

dazza, was it just copper pipe or an actual sleeve for something?

also, i'm getting an R33 master cylinder with my brakes, is it worth putting this on too? is it any better better/different?

from memory it was a straight joiner with a slight indent in the middle, around 35 mm long to suit 1/2 inch copper pipe. Get two and cut them in half , then put a straight cut along the length of all of them with a thin hacksaw blade. That will give you enough play to get them in. hope this helps.

i have an S2 and the bolts that came with the 33 callipers were the right size but i have a RWD so what would i know cause most of u guys have AWD's and the two cars just seem to be worlds apart from what fits and what doesnt. i was thinking of trying some R34 front cause they are bigger and will look better inside my 18's but if the bolts are a different diameter then i cant be stuffed as there isnt really much of a performance gain between 33 and 34 brakes.

    • Yeah, it's getting like that, my daughter is coming over on Thursday to help me remove the bonnet so I can install the Carbuilders underbonnet stuff,  I might get her to give me a hand and remove the hardtop, maybe, because on really hot days the detachable hardtop helps the aircon keep the interior cool, the heat just punches straight through to rag top I also don't have enough hair for the "wind in the hair" experience, so there is that....LOL
    • Could be falling edge/rising edge is set wrong. Are you getting sync errors?
    • On BMWs what I do because I'm more confident that I can't instantly crush the pinch welds and do thousands of USD in chassis damage is use a set of rubber jacking pads designed to protect the chassis/plastic adapter and raise a corner of the car, place the aforementioned 2x12 inch wooden planks under a tire, drop the car, then this normally gives me enough clearance to get to the front central jack point. If you don't need it to be a ramp it only needs to be 1-1.5 feet long. On my R33 I do not trust the pinch welds to tolerate any of this so I drive up on the ramps. Before then when I had to get a new floor jack that no longer cleared the front lip I removed it to get enough clearance to put the jack under it. Once you're on the ramps once you simply never let the car down to the ground. It lives on the ramps or on jack stands.
    • Nah. You need 2x taps for anything that you cannot pass the tap all the way through. And even then, there's a point in response to the above which I will come back to. The 2x taps are 1x tapered for starting, and 1x plug tap for working to the bottom of blind holes. That block's port is effectively a blind hole from the perspective of the tap. The tapered tap/tapered thread response. You don't ever leave a female hole tapered. They are supposed to be parallel, hence the wide section of a tapered tap being parallel, the existince of plug taps, etc. The male is tapered so that it will eventually get too fat for the female thread, and yes, there is some risk if the tapped length of the female hole doesn't offer enough threads, that it will not lock up very nicely. But you can always buzz off the extra length on the male thread, and the tape is very good at adding bulk to the joint.
