Im pretty sure i know the answer, but would like to have it confirmed to reduce my concerns.

Firstly, unfortunelty all my spare cash in getting poured into my wedding fund, and outlaying $3000+ for a bolt on HKS/Garrett turbo isnt even thinkable :D

BUT, im crapping myself about the stock turbo, its going strong but the car's comming up tp 90,000kms and i sure as hell dont want bits of worn ceramic reeking havoc anytime soon.

So, im set on a new Turbo. After hours of reading the massive debates about MonstA, JJR and KKR turbos i think the general concensus is to stear clear of MonstA all together. JJR and KKR most people consider to be identical, correct? with a few pointing out slight differences such as how long each individual turbo is balanced etc with most suggesting KKR receive superior balancing compared to JJR. I think i even read that KKR is balanced using VSR which apparently Garrett use???

So at this stage of my essay, it would appear that KKR are the best turbo chargers in my budget (also apparently a very good warranty???).

OK, so now do i go the kkr 430 or kkr 480?

My overal aim performance wise it to achieve 250-270rwkws.

I need a turbo that can help me achieve this with the following supporting mods

FMIC

Apexi Filter

IN/EX Adjustable Cam Gears

GTR Injectors (unrelated question 1: are they a direct replacement for the rb25det stock injectors? Unrelated question 2, is an aftermarket ECU required for injector swap? it is right?)

4inch Catback Exhaust

Hiflow Cat

3" Dump & front pipes

Fuel Pump (undecided on exact pump to use, recomendations?)

So the kkr 430 will have less lag, but will have to work harder to achieve 250-270rwkws. Were as the kkr 480 will lag like bs but will easily push the required PSI to hit 250-270rwkws.

So, what turbo out of the two do u recommend?

At this stage im leaning towards the kkr430.

Agree? Disagree? Discuss!

All replys appreciated!!!

Cheers Jason

If you want to push over 250kw forget the KKR430, go the kkr480. The most i have seen out of a KKR480 is around 260kw at 18-19psi.

GTR Injectors (unrelated question 1: are they a direct replacement for the rb25det stock injectors? Unrelated question 2, is an aftermarket ECU required for injector swap? it is right?)

GTR injectors wont fit the RB25 as they are top feed not side feed. Therefore if you want to get out of it cheap you can use S15 injectors. But honestly just fork out a bit more cash and get yourself some Nismo 555cc injectors. Yes you will need some form of engine management so you can scale the new injectors. The stock ECU won't allow you to do this.

Fuel Pump (undecided on exact pump to use, recomendations?)

Either install a Bosch 040, or if you want to save yourself the hassle in modifying one to fit, get a direct replacement Nismo/Tomei item.

1. Ive been running 14 psi on my stock turbo and its got 170k on the clock, But its only a streeter so it doesnt see wot for too long and i change the oil at every 2.5k klms.

2. Im upgrading to GT30 soon though, BUT, in my opinion save your dollars (hide it from your misses) and buy quality later instead of sacrificing it now to save a couple of bucks.

3. A after market EMS is a must to get a safe tune in my opinion.

4. I have to many opinions, LOL.

5. My 2 cents.

Sorry this wont ease your mind, but if your cars coming up to 90k kms, its a safe bet that its already well past that figure.

You didnt mention looking at secondhand options? There are usually some good HKS stuff around that may suit your budget, look around and see if you can find something nice, maybe even a used GCG highflow. Sure its used, but you could end up with a more responsive and better quality turbo

Warranty will not cover the turbo once it is on the car.

You seem to have read a lot.

Surprised you have not read that you get what you pay for when it comes to turbos.

Don't stimp on cheap products.

The KKR will need many extras which will bring the price up a bit more which isn't much less then a highflow (which I still wouldn't buy) and less responsive.

hows it going

firstly i'll list my mods,

kkr-430, 555cc nismo squirters, power fc, full 3.5 inch turbo back exhaust. front mount.

i'm running 1.15 bar (almost 17psi) and i'm getting 308hp (230kw), and the turbo has a long way to go before it runs out of puff. i'm hitting full boost at 3950revs and holding strong to 7000, torque is quite good too, however the KKR internal wastegates are super shitty. like unbelievably bullshit. sorry about the swearing but i'm totally disappointed with their quality. it leaks like a sieve. i've had to replace the wastegate actuator with a hks item and that works a treat. no leak at all. the turbo itself is quite responsive, great fun to drive and overall not too bad on fuel with the right tune. however, please remember you have to have a new oil supply line made up when your installing the KKR series (430 or any other) as they are a journal bearing and need more oil than your stock ball bearing unit. oil starvation will kill your KKR. anyways hope that helps, good luck in your quest for ponies. i will be selling my kkr 430 in 2-3 months, going ball bearing route. let me know if your interested. cheers

Slav

wow, cheers for quick responses.

Didnt really consider the 2nd hand option, alot of dogey stuff gets done as we all know lol.

Air research is garretts old stuff ay? Found a to4 Air research done under 2000km/s since being hiflowed ($2000 worth apprantly, with reciepts). Came off a 13b. Sounds ok? but that would need to be high mounted correct? and new flanges fabricated etc..... owww bolt on is so easy, dont want to have to pull the welder out the shed HAHA

kkr-430, 555cc nismo squirters, power fc, full 3.5 inch turbo back exhaust. front mount.

dude i have similar set up but mines a dog. im hoping my ebc and stock ecu remap will fix it. full boost not till 5000+rpm = ridiculous. whats your boost control? i reckon it must be the wastegate leaking, but the actuator looks the same as the old hks one i had on my stock turbz?

i would kill for response.

BUT, im crapping myself about the stock turbo, its going strong but the car's comming up tp 90,000kms and i sure as hell dont want bits of worn ceramic reeking havoc anytime soon.

i got a 94 r33 gtst with around 190 000 on the clock and its still going strong with stock turbo. i rekon u got a fair while left with the stockie so u shouldnt rush into buying a new one and goin the cheap route. save up and get a decent one so it lasts u ages and it bolts on with ease.

thats wat i rekon anyway :( gl with the search and build!!

tbqh I'm really over my KKR480 on mine, it was dynoed at 240rwkw at 18psi for the previous owner, and though after getting a mate to stuff around with the wastegate actuator and replacing the shit manifold gasket which was on there with an OEM one, and hopefully soon changing the V-band, it doesen't feel all that fast. If i had to replace it, i'd definitely going for a HKS/Garrett ball bearing as a replacement.

mind you though, im lucky that mine starts to boost at ~2500rpm, another guy I know has one on an R33 and yeah it dosen't really start to boost until 4000rpm, just seems like theres all these other little things that play up with one of these turbos!

Errrr is your current turbo making strange noises like it's going to die, or you're just replacing it out of paranoia? have you boosted it? If not, why not just wait until it starts playing up before boosting and doing those other mods. That way the wedding will have passed and you'll have time to save up and buy whatever high quality parts you want instead of scrounging for whatever you can get in the meantime. It's not a sure thing that a turbo will find it's way into the cylinders anyway. The fans in my stock one completely disintegrated but no parts were found at all haha. I'd say if it isn't broke right now, don't fix it. Oh, and don't bounce it off the limiter etc in the meantime... until you can afford to replace parts.

get a highflow... I run 230rwkw with a GCG highflow and if I got some injectors i'd be able to push 245rwkw without the monster lag issues you guys are talking about! I'm on full 15psi by about 3200rpm. Plus, you can keep you standard oil and water lines... Keep it looking factory for when the poo poo pull you over.

What about this bolt on kit?

Seems a good price for a garrett setup.

What are the arguments for internal V's External Gate?

This kit is internal.

[edit] WTF Turbine Housing are they using on this kit? Doesnt match up to any GT30 on turbobygarrett.com HELP!

Its running the lowest duty cycle % with the gizmo IBC, so around 8 PSI max. Its going great, but rather replace a turbo now than an engine later.

Oh, and don't bounce it off the limiter etc in the meantime... until you can afford to replace parts.

thats the fun bit LOL

Haha ok... I'd look into how many times a failed turbo = f'cked engine though man... my turbo died with no ill consequence to the engine at all. Same with a mates just recently. Mind you, both those cars have done well over 100,000kms (clocks read a little over 100ks). I'm just looking at it from cheap shortcuts now vs nicer gear later. I hate doing things half assed.

BTW, HKS GT-RS FTW, I've got one and it's great :ninja:

    • I know why it happened and I’m embarrassed to say but I was testing the polarity of one of the led bulb to see which side was positive with a 12v battery and that’s when it decided to fry hoping I didn’t damage anything else
    • I came here to note that is a zener diode too base on the info there. Based on that, I'd also be suspicious that replacing it, and it's likely to do the same. A lot of use cases will see it used as either voltage protection, or to create a cheap but relatively stable fixed voltage supply. That would mean it has seen more voltage than it should, and has gone into voltage melt down. If there is something else in the circuit dumping out higher than it should voltages, that needs to be found too. It's quite likely they're trying to use the Zener to limit the voltage that is hitting through to the transistor beside it, so what ever goes to the zener is likely a signal, and they're using the transistor in that circuit to amplify it. Especially as it seems they've also got a capacitor across the zener. Looks like there is meant to be something "noisy" to that zener, and what ever it was, had a melt down. Looking at that picture, it also looks like there's some solder joints that really need redoing, and it might be worth having the whole board properly inspected.  Unfortunately, without being able to stick a multimeter on it, and start tracing it all out, I'm pretty much at a loss now to help. I don't even believe I have a climate control board from an R33 around here to pull apart and see if any of the circuit appears similar to give some ideas.
    • Nah - but you won't find anything on dismantling the seats in any such thing anyway.
    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
