Well they say Lakeside is the highest average speed of any track in Australia. But I know the locals say the same thing about PI... so to compare i just went and found the outright IPRA lap records for both tracks (IPRA was just the easiest for me to find this data):

Lakeside (2.41km) Wayne Wakefield Mazda RX3 25/10/1998 0:57.4500

Phillip Is (4.448km) ROHAN AMBROSE MAZDA RX7 12/09/1999 1.46.0362

Unbelievably, both lap records work out to be 151.01kph average speed - equal to 2 decimal places!

The Supra is basically the way I bought it from Japan. Its got Jap Teins, Jasma exhaust and pod filter. It has the small brakes but they do a pretty good job - don't fade or go long in 5 or 6 laps of Lakeside.

No other suspension mods apart from the Teins, but I spent a fair bit of time messing around with ride heights to find a nice balance. And we got as much camber and castor out of the standard adjustment facilities as possible. Camber maxed out at 2 degrees on the right, but we got 2.5 on the left. Castor is 3.5 degrees. Zero toe. I haven't messed with the rear end alignment yet.

Tyres are Kumho Ecsta XS (KU36) 245/40 & 275/35R18. They're not a real semi slick with a treadwear rating of 180, more of an in-between tyre like the Toyo R1-R but they have a treadwear of 140.

Engine is standard boost, standard intercooler. I did what they call the 'TTC mod' which involves re-routing a couple of boost lines that control the operation of the vavle to the second turbo to make it run in parellel rather than sequential. Gives you a fair bit more mid-range, but obviously nothing extra up top. It was hopeless on the track in sequential!

It really needs to be driven hard to get those times though. There isn't anything left in it - not with me at the wheel anyway. And I have alot of experience at Lakeside, which is a massive advantage there. I'm a bit surprised to only be 4 seconds off the IPRA lap record in a near standard road car in full street trim and street tyres!

I can't vouch for the accuraccy of the tacho in an 18 year old car, but it's definately moving. Consider I'm entering the straight at a fair clip in fourth gear and pulling fifth about 30 yards before the tower, seems pretty accurate to me? Lakeside is quick you know :P

Was yours the black R32/33? in Harry's group? Some quickies in that group, black RX7 of course, black Silvia, white Silouette. Good to watch you blokes in action :P

I knew Lakeside is quick and the entry on to the straight is quick...lol from watchin Touring car races :) Just surprised as my car is only a tad quicker down the straight at PI and its all down hill, copme onto the straight similarily in top of 4th into 5th so at about 180km/h...and i have substantially more power?!?!

So it seems that my extra grunt is only good for another 5-10km/h

the turn onto the straight at Lakeside isn't that fast. about 140kph I'd say. I don't think Ben has that much speed on me down the straight either - I'm hitting 214 by the braking area after the kink, and seem to pull away in a straight line. Maybe its got a lower diff ratio?

Gearing could be different. But mine is pretty damn short anyway. Just keep an eye on if you were run 4th gear to 7,000rpm what speed it equates to? The gearing of the GTSt (tyre diam permitting) is that if you have the std ECU then you hit the speed limit and the rev limit in 4th gear pretty damn close together. So top of 4th gear is typically around 180km/h at 7,500rpm. LOL, i use every one of those revs as the turbo needs it :D

You can see the gearing is pretty short as i am almost running out of revs in 5th gear and i am only about 235km/h

Oh and Ben, this was my car with the Bilsteins pre Teins. It has settled down a lot with regards to pitching under brakes and lift off oversteer, all the nasty stuff :(

Roy, you need a decent seat dude, look at that move around! lol I can't wait to get down to PI, apparently there's a two dayer there run by Stokel next month that sounds like fun, I won't make it though

Your car sounds awesome, I don't rev past seven as it just runs out of puff with the std turbo. As I said can't wait to get your Teins in it, I reckon it'll be a vast improvement :D

Love to tell you more about speeds, but the speedo dunt work :[

Yeh, i have a seat but i dont leave it in when i am doing lots of street driving. Before PI it was a rush to get tune leaned on for more power and new tyres fitted, so seat was left in the bedroom...i miss it when its not in the car.

Yeh, since i am not tracking my car at present i welcome the R32 brotherhood borrow some parts to help us all suss out what works and where we can improve our respective steeds :( Bumpy Lakeside will be a real test for them and you are a more experienced driver then me so any thoughts would probably be more accurate then mine.

LOL, but i would love to see an in car vid to see how the car is handlling/driving with them :)

I think my speed calculations might be a bit optimistic too. I found my copy of July Motor magazine yesterday with a PCOTY test at Lakeside. The Porsche GT2 hit a top of 215kph and ran 58.5 according to the performance box data. They come with Michelin semi slicks and it was driven by Warren Luff I think. The Supra can't be doing the same speed as that Porsche. That's what you get for using speed per 1000rpm data from the internet I suppose...

  • 3 weeks later...
way to go Danny Mischok! a driver with at least 10 years experience in IPRA circuit racing even manages to look like a total fkwit in a field of noobs in their road cars! good work mate!

looks like I'll be back in the Supra instead of the Datto this weekend...

HI Harry

It's amazing what you find when you google your name!

You whould probably get your facts straight before shooting your mouth off as the crap that went on with that knob Doug Chappel was from his own inexperience as most of us that actually race and not potter around at sprints always give it a bit of a suirt coming out of the pits IN THE RAIN to see how much tractions available and unlike most my thing comes on like a train at 4000rpm and like bounce off the limiter at 10k in the dry let alone the wet but Doug or John wouldn't know that as they've never had anything with any poke! Then when he carried on like a spoilt 5 year old because I didn't see the black flag, is because it was raining and mine like every other IP car doesn't have a heater so the car was fogging in places and when go down the straight with the Motec saying hte front wheels are doing 178kph and the back wheels doing 204kph with a G sensor reading strange, you know maybe I wasn't going in a dead straight line and I was a little busy! as even when we raced there for real they had two black flags, 1 at the start line up at the tower and another coming out of the carousel as you never saw the one on the start line let alone one being held by an inexperienced knob on the fence!

As far as the noise of the thing it has been tested numerous times here in Qld and interstate by the NSW EPA! at has never read more than 92.6db at 30mt's as per Aust Standard and even here at Mt Cotton on their on and the Redlands Shire Councils regularly calibrated computerised monitoring gear the car never goes past 92db with it normally around 91.6db. So to find out that I was being judged on a rather suspect hand held piece of junk what hasn't ever been properly calibrated and the controllers not being able to decide between themselves whether it was 102.5 or 106.5db does not distress me that much but what does worry me is the amount of bullshit going between all parties that control Lakeside is that you guys better make the most of the opportunity you have now as it could all go pear shaped as the council had unrealistic goals when even brand new road cars are failing the noise limits with ADR complianced exhausts.

And yes I am welcome back with the car but they want me to rework the exhaust but they will not accept that it isn't the exhaust which is popping their Dick Smith-Tandy Radio Shack sound meters but instead the induction noise

If you have any questions or disagreements with anything I've said ring me as I don't bite and I tend not to shoot my mouth off too much in public

Danny

Ps If your under the impression that you were going to beat me around there I'd get you credit card out as my old single cam engine did 60.8's on old Yokohama A008R tyre and not even the RS's! and Gerry got down to 58.29 sec with his 168RWHP YB Cosworth powered Escort and mine makes ALOT more than that and has had a lot more development and before you start going on about the track IT WAS ALWAYS THAT BUMPY and the patches on the corners they aere always there in some form so you can't blame that for you only doing high 2's

well I did beat you out there, by about 11 or 12 seconds that day!!! So if you're under the impression you're going to beat me out there, you better sharpen up a bit mate! And unlike you, I only got 1 clear lap after I passed the STi that was holding me up., hadn't driven the Datsun since the AHC in 2007, and had never driven it in the wet. So much for you not pottering around at Sprints eh?

high 2s? my standard Supra road car ran 1:01.3 last time on street tyres (not semi slicks) on the track as it is in 2008. Not realy worth comparing to what you (or whoever Gerry is) claim to have done over 7 years ago. We all saw what you were capable of the other week - 1:20-odd!

Your car was easily the loudest car there on the day, and was never going to be under the required db limit. It doesn't matter whether the noise is coming from the exhaust or the induction, there's a noise limit and your car was way in excess of it. And you ignored black flags lap after lap. They were hanging out way over the pit wall with a giant black flag... its you responsibility to look out for flags at the flag points. I managed to see all the flags just fine and I don't have any demisting or even working wipers in the Datsun!

My Supra only has a cat and a Jasma cannon on the back and it easily passes the noise tests out there. My Datsun only have a res and straight through muffler and again easily passes. So I call bullsh1t on the brand new road cars failing the noise tests at Lakeside.

don't it make ya proud?

Still making  new friends i see :P

yeah, much like you with this comment. I've known Danny for years Vince, whoever you are... what's your problem anyway? Never met you or had any dealings with you. All I can remember is you taking exception to me posting to let other SAU people know about the Lakeside Sprint Series when it started, and you felt you had to rush to Paul's defence for some reason just because he also ran 1 day out there??? That ain't me making new friends, that's all you bud.

    • Thanks for that, I'll check it all out. I can always do the brakes last anyway if its a problem.  The 16's are super cool, if they do fit I'll cruise around with them for a bit.
    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart. Happily the guy who assembled the engine had kept reasonable records, so we now know the final spec is: Bottom end: Standard block and crank Ross 86.5mm forgies, 9:1 compression Spool forged rods Standard main bolts Oil pump Spool billet gears in standard housing Aeroflow extended and baffled sump Head Freshly rebuilt standard head with new 80lb valve springs Mild porting/port match Head oil feed restrictor VCT disabled Tighe 805C reground cams (255 duration, 8.93 lift)  Adjustable cam gears on inlet/exhaust Standard head bolts, gasket not confirmed but assumed MLS External 555cc Nismo injectors Z32 AFM Bosch 023 Intank fuel pump Garret 2871 (factory housings and manifold) Hypertune FFP plenum with standard throttle   Time to book in a trip to Unigroup
    • I forgot about my shiny new plates!
    • Well, apparently they do fit, however this wont be a problem if not because the car will be stationary while i do the suspension work. I was just going to use the 16's to roll the old girl around if I needed to. I just need to get the E90 back on the road first. Yes! I'm a believer! 🙌 So, I contacted them because the site kinda sucks and I was really confused about what I'd need. They put together a package for me and because I was spraying all the seat surfaces and not doing spot fixes I decided not to send them a headrest to colour match, I just used their colour on file (and it was spot on).  I got some heavy duty cleaner, 1L of colour, a small bottle of dye hardener and a small bottle of the dye top coat. I also got a spray gun as I needed a larger nozzle than the gun I had and it was only $40 extra. From memory the total was ~$450 ish. Its not cheap but the result is awesome. They did add repair bits and pieces to the quote originally and the cost came down significantly when I said I didn't need any repair products. I did it over a weekend. The only issues I had were my own; I forgot to mix the hardener into the dye two coats but I had enough dye for 2 more coats with the hardener. I also just used up all the dye because why not and i rushed the last coat which gave me some runs. Thankfully the runs are under the headrests. The gun pattern wasn't great, very round and would have been better if it was a line. It made it a little tricky to get consistent coverage and I think having done the extra coats probably helped conceal any coverage issues. I contacted them again a few months later so I could get our X5 done (who the f**k thought white leather was a good idea for a family car?!) and they said they had some training to do in Sydney and I could get a reduced rate on the leather fix in the X5 if I let them demo their product on our car. So I agreed. When I took Bec in the E39 to pick it up, I showed them the job I'd done in my car and they were all (students included) really impressed. Note that they said the runs I created could be fixed easily at the time with a brush or an air compressor gun. So, now with the two cars done I can absolutely recommend Colourlock.  I'll take pics of both interiors and create a new thread.
