Hi guys,

Im new to the forum.

Im looking to upgrade my 32 GTR to between 300-330awkw.

I already rebuilt the motor because i bought it with a run bearing.

Here's a list of mods already done: ( i know now that half the stuff isnt needed, but i was young and silly. Anyway im working with these bits

N1 block

N1 crank (grubscrewed, linished etc)

cp pistons

Argo rods

ARP head studs

Race series bearings

Tomei MLS head gasket

Tomei sump baffle and oil restrictor

Tomei poncams 260/9.15

Tomei springs

Tomei adj gears

N1 oil and water pumps

Gates belt

Light port head

Tomei manifolds

Mines dumps

Bathurst spec turbos (i think)

full exhaust

Thicker intercooler

std afms

std injectors

Probably other things those are main ones for now.

Bathurst turbos quite laggy so im very interested in the GTSSs. Are they worth the extra dosh over the 2860-9?

Also what do you think they are capable of with my engine. (forgot to mention its running 9:1 comp)

What sort of boost do these turbos stop performing at?

Sounds like the go is nismo afms and 700cc injectors? does this sound about right?

Its a street car above all so looking to be responsive.

I appreciate any wisdom you would care to share (any silly questions i apologise for im a newbie)

Cheers

Luke

You've got SO many parts there needed for 400kw, so why not aim a bit higher?

I'd be putting a set of -5's on there (cheaper than gtss/-9 also), run them up to 24 psi.

You havnt mentioned ECU

Go get some "ID1000" injectors by a company called Injector Dynamics. Their drivability (eg street manners) is out of this world good.

Yes NISMO AFMs will do the job

Sell the current turbos, they're laggy and for that lag won't pay off with power.

If you want response then the -9s are the choice, no doubt, for a 2.6ltr. I had them on my GTR. Swapped em out for -5s and the car is noticeably slower below 150km/h, very noticeable delay in between gears. Which is the stuff you don't see on a dyno.

Above 150km/h-200km/h+ though obviously its a different ball game. So if you want response as in - under 150km/h performance - then -9s are the choice.

Sard 700s and Nismo AFMs will suit perfectly. Mine made 24psi early and then fell away to around 18psi in the top end, making 340rwkw @ 7000rpm (around 19-20psi), after that it drops off. They come on @ 3300rpm nicely however so plenty of range to choose from.

GT-SS & Garrett -9s are identical. The HKS items are a waste of money... Here is something I prepared earlier

You can get -9s locally for around $2800-$3000. That's complete with gaskets ($100) & actuators ($250).

If you paid $450 for 2 actuators, then you were stung yet again. They are $250 from GCG every day of the week.

The HKS Kit costs $300 more before it even leaves Japan. Add freight, add Tax... Even conservatively you've paid $3700

All for what?

A spray-on HKS logo on the 2 actuators. That's it. There is no other difference.

The HKS Kit is only comparative when the dollar was above 95, which when it was - the HKS kit was a good buy.

Thanks for the info nismoid

Will have to have a good think before I decide.

Sounds like the -9s would be a godsend after living with laggy bathurst turbos for a year.

Decisions decisions

You made 24psi at 3300rpm, or they started making decent boost at 3300rpm? Impressive if full boost from 3.3k and makes peak power at 7k, thats a 3.7k spread of useable torque, don't see any turbos on rb25s that make that kind of power spread at >=300kw

thanks for the quick reply N1gtr

Yeh I suppose I probably should aim a little higher.

Its got a power fc (afm version).

Also got gts4 diff gears

Will the nismo pump handle 400kw?

Diff gears done aswel? Ok forget -9. They're Just a terrible choice IMO given the rest of the setup.

Don't get caught up in the lag difference between -9 and -5, you're probably thinking it will be a lag monster and suck from reading the threads on here, given your gearing and the rest of the setup stick 5's on there and enjoy your car.

Pump should be fine.

Power fc will also be fine.

Btw Nismoids car on 9's was stupidly quick through hills, havnt been in it since his recent turbo swap, but will soon.

So it's not like 9's are crap, I'm not saying that, I'm trying to say you've spent about 10k in parts which pretty much all will be a waste on those turbos (stock rebuild in stock block will be fine for 9's).

Where are you located? You could always meet up with some built GTR owners and go for a ride or two before making the choice.

^ you know there is a difference. You've been in my car & saw it come on like a cut cat around 3500rpm in 2nd. :P

Will take you for a belt next time I drive up, or you come down. You'll see what i mean about in/out of gear stuff.

It's just what one person calls big vs another.

That extra half second delay in between gears from the larger -5s is the most noticeable between the two set-ups and kinda gives me the shits a little.

The RPM band you can just adjust driving style and pick a lower gear etc.

He is in NSW, i checked - otherwise I'd have offered myself lol :D

No they start ramping up onto boost hard @ 3300rpm. Forget when it hit 24psi, I posted the graph(s) a while ago if it's a major concern.

Noticeably sooner than -5s either way.

-5s dont do much until 4000rpm but hold till 8000, my limit is set to 8300 and i hit it regularly so they still keep pulling.

Its pretty much the same power band to be honest. Its just a shift of 700rpm to the left really.

I never said anything about torque though... That progressively drops off, same as the -5s do.

Torque doesn't hold till redline.

Well that's cause we aren't talking about RB25's in here

Eg mine on 5's (before bearing let go) did 150rwkw at 3000rpm, 235rwkw at 4000, then maxed the boost (ebc was off and was running off the pussy actuators). It was well on it's way to the same sort of number as before but was making something like 5psi from the start of the run at 1500rpm which is just incredible to drive.

Anyway, back to GTRs, maybe this guy needs to be posting in the 400kw thread ;)

Cool thanks for that, a 4k power band is still impressive either way.

No doubt, it always seems to in turbo cars, just meant it held decent torque to redline (as peak power was made at 7k).

Haha of course, I personally don't have much experience with them, just trying to get my head around the different turbo configs and how they perform. It is my next upgrade when I get bored of my 32 with 25det

Realistically it's probably closer to 3500rpm than 4000rpm given it's not always loaded in 4th - but still both turbo choices offer a good spread of power.

This is on PULP as well. E85 will improve it a little from results seen thus far.

Piranha if you're in Sydney, it's easy enough to get you a ride in a 300kw GTR and back to back in a 400kw GTR.

I promise you will want the 400kw one then once you've seen them back to back.

Good point Ash made about one person's idea of lag against another. For example you may get someone thinking a 2.6L and GTRS's is a good setup-in most peoples minds they'd say that setup is totally crap, but the owner may like it.

See what you like and go from there :)

Yep I'm in sydney. That would be good to gauge the different turbos.

I have been in an s13 with rb26 and -5s but it only weighed 1000kg. Just destroyed the tyres. can't compare it with awd gtr anyway.

    • I'd be very surprised if you can buy new OEM mats. But if you can, I want some too!  Do you have links to the variations you found? Also, where are you located? I found that Nengun is happy to list items to purchase but when you do buy them you'll get an email that it's actually discontinued. As far as I know the variations in floor mats are different colour schemes as well as automatic and manual having a slightly different shape. The automatic ones fit into a manual car without issues, but I think you'd have trouble fitting the other way around. I have photos that show the shape difference if you care. FWIW I bought sets of used floor mats in decent condition at yahoo auctions.
    • Hi 🙋‍♂️. Just bought my Unicorn but the interior need some minor work so it would match my expectations ;). I noticed it is hard to get used oem floor mats in good condition so i started to dig if there's any chance to buy set of new ones. I found two websites - nengun and amayama and it looks like one can still buy factory new floor mats in Japan, but thers a small issue. Some mats (i assume genuine, oem ones) are marked as G4900 and these are "discontinued". The ones you can buy are marked as G4911 but i have no idea if these are also oem, made by other producer or some lower quality replacements that looks entirely different. Can anyone help? 😃  P.s. there is also some strange indication - 0V005, 0V015 and 0V505. Any idea what does it mean? Would appreciate any help with this 🙏
    • Hi, Marek here 🙋‍♂️. I finally fulfilled my longtime dream - recently bought Stagea and now waiting for it to arrive in Poland. There's only few of these in my country, and one of the owners  recommended mi this forum as a source of all the info i'd need since now i own one  so here i am.
    • Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though
