Hey guys i dont know if this is the correct section, but im building up a track gtr and planning on circuit work on semi slicks and drifting as well with another engine setup and rwd, the motor is pretty serious (over 550rwhp) so i need a fair bit of fuel. I am gonna go straight for a fuel cell instead of using the original tank setup. I doubt ill be competing in door to door action in the near future, its more a time attack setup so not going to be on track for extended periods of time. I might do dutton rally etc in the future though.

Now the question is what size to go for, i want a smaller one if possible but dont want to be refueling every 5 min because its too small?

Im thinking if i go small enough i dont need a surge tank as well or should u always run a surge tank setup?

is it best to get one with a sender setup in it as well?

at the moment im leaning towards a 30L one, so i assume a surge tank is a definate yes for this size?

If running a surge tank do u just run an external lift pump (bosch 040?) and then that feeds the surge tank (couple of litres in size?) then to my 2 bosch 044 pumps then to the motor?

any info on peoples setups in race cars appreciated

Surge tank may be the better option i had fuel surge with a 35 litre tank.

Also maybe the only way you will connect 2 044 pumps into the system as each should have its own - 6an supply, would be quite difficult to run them with only one low pressure outlet between them

if you have a read through Duncans R32 build thread you will see some fuel tank/surge tank discussion that youl find helpfull. but in short if you are running a cell with no internall pumps, you will need a surge tank/lift pump setup. . unless you modify tank to run internall pumps with a sump or baffles.

i am trying this in my car. have modified fuel cell to house 2 040 bosch pumps to eliminate the need of a surge tank, but it is untested a this stage.

the tank is off the shelf but the sump with the 2 intank pumps is custom, as well as the feed lines being plumbed through the side of the tank into the inline filter.

LOL same tank i had!

thanks for the info, i went to the local track yesterday and had a look at some other cars racing and talking to the drivers and they reckon they are using around 17L in the 8 lap races so a 30L tank is probably the best size for me, i dont want too big or i might as well leave the stock tank arangement in. My other car with the engine im gonna use is running twin Goss intank pumps feeding to a 3L surge tank and then 2 x 044's into a single 1/2' fuel line to the motor.

The 2 goss pumps would still be ok on the low pressure side of the surge tank even if not submersed (sp?) in fuel? I might use them instead of the single 040 as mentioned.

Running the lift pump is the same as running intank pumps setup wise isnt it? just need small low pressure pumps to feed surge tank and then the 044s for the engine supply is ok? it wont suck the surge tank dry will it if its been ok in the current car and running same power?

cheers

yeh, this is of upmost importance. ive run carter 14psi lift pumps for surge fill with Bosch 984 pressure pump and never emptyed the surge, but fuel return was always plumbed back to surge tank, then overflow back to main tank.

as long as your fuel return is plumbing into the surge tank should be ok
  • 1 year later...

sorry to dig this up.

in regards to the overflow line, does it matter if it goes from the top of the surge to the bottom of the fuel cell?

im not sure if it will be able to drain this way or doesn't it matter due to the system being pressurized.

    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
    • Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely a coolant push. Oil catch can is empty and always has been. As the engine is out now I'll be having a good look over things. I do have some detonation on the piston tops from a trigger issue back about 5 years ago. I felt it and shut off then bought a new ecu and changed the trigger. Never been an issue since. It never hurt the power, its made almost 80hp more since that incident but I will pull the bearing caps to take a look. If the bearings are damaged I will do a bottom end refresh. Head is being re conditioned at the moment and the block will be cleaned and checked to ensure it's flat. I'll go with a kameari gasket and see how it ends up. The other thing I'm not super keen on is the cylinder colours. I suspect this is from the inlet manifold. The plan will be to put it back together, retune and then stick a plazmaman billet inlet on it and retune. I'm happy with the power, if it makes a little more, then great, but I would rather just make everything more efficient at this stage.
    • Maybe they'll look to do a bunch of presales to help inject some cash fast for their financial issues...
    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
    • Well the articals keep saying a Q50s (Skyline in Japan) with a new Manual gearbox. I like the talk about the new looks with the round tail lights. I hope they bring back the retro look like they did with the Z
