That BenQ sounds like quite reasonable grunt for the ask , will look into that one .

I think I'll get hold of the datalogit first and maybe kick the old P3 500 in the guts with XP and see what happens .

I really do want a more modern unit but if I can struggle on a bit longer with the old gear what is mid range now will be entry level in the not too distant future .

Thanks everyone for the hints and tips and should have an invoice from Stuart v soon .

Must be about time to skim through Paul33's FAQ , cheers A .

The centrino HP laptops they have been getting at work for the last few years still have a real serial port (ie RS232 with a DB9 connector). I dont know the model name but will try to find out tomorrow. Otherwise a PCMCIA aka PCCARD serial card may be better than a USB adapter judging by what others have said here, but personally i've not heard of many problems myself and we use them often to talk to switches/routers/unix/linux boxes.

That's an interesting find . I was talking to a friend last night who lives and breathes computer hareware and he said be very wary of anything withe Nvidia 8 series or later graphics gear , failure rates are a bit high and Nvidia is muzzeling the lap top manufactures to try and keep a lid on the bad PR .

So I guess it means Intel or ATI graphics goes on the wish list as well .

If you can find that HP model I'll check it out , cheers Adrian .

the issue with the nvidia gear is that they are suffering from the same issues the xbox 360 suffers from. if they get too hot too often the solder holding the chip to the board gives out, only an issue if the machine is getting really hot. the general fix for it has been to release updates so that the cooling fans on them kick in a little sooner.

I've datlogit tuned my '33 with my mac with xp boot and also run a tech edge 2E0 lambda no worries. Usb to serial not a problem although I've never been able to get the compare function to work. Probably was doing something wrong - haven't looked at it for ages.

Cheers

P.S Windows sux :(

ATM I'm loading (feels like loading a cement truck with a mug) a late XP onto the old P3 500 Toshiba because it's all I have with a serial port . My mate reckons 2000 Pro would be better on this dinosaur but have to wait and see .

From Whirlpool I found that Toshiba Tecra A8 143's have serial ports and so do HP NX 6320's - I think .

Looking around 2nd hand but I think waiting until the current crop of Centrinos (minus nvidia graphics) are cheaper is the go .

Cheers A .

Unfortunately its discontinued as well. The doco has the serial port labeled "vga" port, but you can see from the pin count its not.

P3 500 won't cut it , 4+ hours to load XP SP3 and 35 min to defrag the snail ?

Toshiba Tecra range lap tops seem to have serial ports and some of them are not desperate price wise for a reasonably up to date thing . I've been looking into A8's and A9's but yet to see one in the flesh .

Cheers A .

    • I certainly fall into the annoyed camp, but glad to hear that if it's happening at low boost then I'm not likely going to blow a turbo and end up with metal shards in my oil. Just feels like it prevents me from really driving it without hesitation and "peak" performance. Wonder if it's the VCAM, it did an impressive job of shifting the torque curve and faster spool, but maybe now it's "too fast" and there's too much air for how open the throttle is.  Based on some other threads, will also do some reading on synchronizing the actuators. They are the default actuators that come on the Garrett's and I would think they would be set the same coming from the factory, but if the turbos don't actually work exactly the same way at the same time as previously mentioned, it would be worth making sure the actuators are actuating together properly
    • I went down this rabbit hole before, ended up sourcing a motor from the UK (I'm in Japan) which also didn't function correctly. With the original motor, I disassembled it and reassembled it and it works somewhat, sometimes. What I could deduce from all my screwing around is that there is calibration of the gears on the inside of the motor and two ramps on the main gear which activate switches that operate the motor and move the sunroof either to retract into the roof or tilt. Where I got stuck was that, it seemed in my case that one or both of the switches that are activated by the ramp on the gear did not always activate and thus the motor did not move, causing it to sometimes not retract or tilt (apologies, I've forgotten which way it didn't work.).  Of course this part is discontinued at Nissan now, it's the same part in the S15 but no other models. I also contacted the manufacturer of the component for schematics - forgot the name, they're based in Gifu - but they declined to share the information due to being bound by an NDA, sadly. Looking through my pictures now, it seems I last had a crack at this in 2022. See, I so kindly wrote "open" and "close" next to the switches. If you figure it out, please do tell me. Those little switches, with the red buttons may need to be replaced.
    • It says 300ZX, does that make it an Aus delivered car? Funny how back in the day I just couldn't care less about Z32's and these days I am just in love with them. Back when Nissan was into pushing the envelope. 🤣
    • Hi guys, just after some guidance with an R34 sunroof that has stopped working correctly. It still opens and closes perfectly fine, but it no longer tilts/vents up or down. As a result, the rear of the glass now sags a bit as it drops down slightly in order to retract into the roof, but now it can't pop upwards into a flush position. I’ve probed the pins on the back of the switch connector with a multimeter and it seems like both switches (for open/close and tilt/vent) still work correctly. Any ideas on what it could be, or where I should even start in terms of diagnosing? I'm sure someone's had this issue before but I haven't been able to find anything online relating to this specific issue, most of the issues are with the seals leaking or the motor failing entirely. Thanks in advance!
