C&Y motorsports (theyre in this months option2) is right down the road from me and they have a 1J sitting there with a manual tranny.

i have always loved how ripe these things sound (like an old boosted F1 motor) in comparison to the RB25 (like a tractor on steroids) and looking at some of the 1J dyno results on the yota forums and in the option mags, it would SEEM like its a tad bit more potent that the RB25, at least.

with that being said, the "team toyo" drift car, not kawabatas, but kuroi's, is running a 1J that he pulled a RB25 out to put in.

anyone running one in an R chassis car?

They sound pretty similar dude....both straight 6's with similar dimensions...the only diffences you would hear would be caused by exhaust design, not by the engines themselves

They are a sturdier than an RB25, but in my opinion the difference isnt big enough to warrant a swap. For the cost of the engine swap and the engine you could build a forged rb25 that will punch just as hard if not harder than a factory 1J. Saying that 1J's do have a nice head, think yamaha designed if i remember correctly. Ive heard of people strapping singles to these things and with appropriate support mods running 4-500hp...but look in the dyno thread, a built RB25 can also make similar power.

Only real reason I can see for swapping your RB25 for a 1J would be if you destroyed ur current engine and had a cheap 1J available

Stock for stock they are a superior engine in every way but probably not a cost effective swap...

Not agreed, in my experience the RB25s seem to flow a bit better - ie more power on less boost. But yeah, the 1JZ is a stronger unit.

The exhaust note is because of the exhaust design, get a tubular exhaust manifold on both and you'll find the engines are very very similar sounding... 6boost manifolds make RB25s sound pretty wicked

from the 1j's ive seen they make upto 400-420hp with ease but then hit a brick wall, they need a hell of alot of boost to make 500hp with a big turbo. Ones i know of run 24psi on a t78-33d making only 410hp and another one with cams and gtk650 making 480hp on around 24-25psi. Though i must say they are both stock internals and lasting with that sort of power and boost. Plus they are cheap motors to buy compared to 25's.

You're gonna have clearance issues with brakeing consonants and such with their crazy wrong side turbo setup... Might take a fair bit of modding to fit it in...

pretty sure sydney kid had a 2j powered skyline many years ago and had mega troubles with the turbo's heating the breaks to the point that they wouldn't work after 5 laps...

i think maybe with the class sydney kid had to run in he had to use stock turbos (i think it was a supra, not a 2J skylines also) and that could have had issues with the brakes, but most people go medium/big single and then it should be easy enough to stop heating the master cylender

1JZ>RB25 imo

to the guy who asked if i am in japan the answer is yes, i live here. (japan)

i looked into a few things, and when i said 1J i meant the jzx100 model, which is the single turbo with VVT-i, which would alleviate most of the brake booster. like i said, the toyo guys are running this in an RPS chassis so...

as far as the markII and its variants, they are dog shit cars. the japanese kids cant give them away here, they all drive 180s or older model laurels with SR swaps. thats around my area at least.

im thinking with a custom turbo mani to place it a little closer to the front of the engine, youd be fine. Manabu Arikaki, who just retired from Top Secret as one of their fab men, lives down the road from me and still does fab work on the side. making the intake and exhaust manifolds would be pretty easy for him, judging by the supra he has LOL.

this, in my mind, was strictly a "if my RB has a hole in the side of the block" scenario.

im thinking the sound is due to the short stroke as well. im not after the sound though, im after a better flowing head, but if you guys are saying the RB is a little better above 400...

2jz? Rb26? Vq35dett? Vq45de? Vq45dett?

I dunno if youre trying to be a smart ass or not, but the other point of a 1J is they are laying around here for 800 bucks.

RB26s......arent. these things have a cult following here and you have to pry cold dead fingers off them.

The 1JZGTE has .2mm shorter stroke, or 71.5mm vs 71.7mm for the RB25DET and they both have 86mm bore... RB25DET > 1JZGTE :D

In the cases I have seen so far RB25DETs keep making more power with untouched (ie cams/porting etc) heads than the 1JZGTEs. On stock turbos the 1JZGTEs do better however, but thats because the 1JZGTEs come with better turbos. There is no questioning the 1JZGTE is stronger, though having said that I have been running mid/high 200rwkw for a couple of years ago in my daily driven R33 with no issues whatsoever from the engine and I don't expect it will start so I guess it depends on what you are looking for.

i have heard nothing but good things about the 1JZGTE engine makes same amount of KW at the engine as a RB25 206kw if i am correct or 208kw.

A remember Rigoli had an R32 running a 7MGTE 6cylinder turbo and i think it was doing 9's reason they put it in was the engine was laying around and the R32 didnt have an engine in it.

I have also seen a 1JZ in a S13 Silvia and for same price of a 1JZ u can only buy a Rb20 thats on price comparisson i also have been told that a 1JZ head out flows a RB25 head also been told a 2JZ head will fit with AM pistons.

mate if you have the funds go for it check out how weights of the 1JZ engine compared to the RB25 aswell id like to know what differences there is im guessing you would run an R154 5speed box as i think a getrag would be a fair bit of moding to fit.

a 1j weighs less than an rb20 im pretty sure. 1j's are super tough motors but i guess naything is when its done right. maybe ask the workshop how much it would cost to do the swap regardless of how much you can pick the block up for.

    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
    • For race cars, this is one part where I find having the roll cage bar having gone through a hole in the floor better than the build it up on a ledge inside... The Merc I help on, the main hoop ends are marked on the car, and the jack is marked... Jack goes under a few inches and lifts one whole side of the car up... Removes that fight for long slim jacks for race car duties!   My biggest issue for the daily drivers I work on, is my jacks don't go high enough. The jacks start out on a few blocks, jack it up, then start a second jack under it on more blocks, and then I can get an axle stand under it. My axle stands are presently in use, and are nearly fully extended. The car is sitting with barely more than a cm of clearance to get the wheel off the studs! Sarah's Kluger is the same, as it has an ungodly amount of droop available in the suspension and a distinct lack of good jacking points!
    • Happy? Yep, my to do list is getting shorter and shorter. Either this light approaching is the end of the tunnel, or I'm about to be hit by a train... Ha ha ha   Also, Duncan isn't that far out of town that you need to make a multi day drive out of it. 😛
