Hi guys,

I know we are all pretty biased on this site, but I have started to wonder about one of these as a family car.

Did a bit of research and other then a stupid name and not being able to get a huge variety of aftermarket turbos, the in manual sound great.. From what I read and hear the triptronics are a bit of a flop, and nobody wants them thats why they are heaps cheaper!!

Came across this and wish I could buy it - As the seller knows awsome impossible comb!

anyway appreciate your thoughts or experiences

well i picked the stagea over the legnum.

some of the reasons being: the legnum is much rarer and parts are hard to come by, engine is rare outside of japan too. plus its one crowded engine bay, i sure as hell wouldnt want to work on it. as for the auto trans the only bad things ive heard is its ability to handle high power. no different in the nissans either

as a family car id go with a good condition stagea. but like you say im biased :P

they are a great handling car for one. boot it around a corner and it sticks and goes. AYC plays a major part in that. I had a couple of them on loan for 3 weeks and was quite impressed. only thing I didnt like was the fuel economy. they tend to drink a bit. speed wise they move quite well and the speed is illusive. they appear slow (both cars I had were auto.) but are far from it.

wife liked the 96 I had as it had a sunroof and lots of space.

lol Chris, if you think fuel economy in a Legnum is bad, try driving a Stagea!

Legnums are awesome value for money - unless you want big horsepower, I'd take a Legnum over a Stagea every day of the week. And yes, I've owned both.

Quincy, visit www.ozvr4.com - plenty of VR-4 nuts on there.

i'd take a legnum over a stagea, and no that's not because i own a legnum, i've pretty much owned both (my ex gf had a modifed stagea)

they have such a smooth torquey V6, AYC is a fantastic system, the interiors are quite nice (mine has factory recaro's and carbon fibre) fuel economy is very similar between the 2 cars, its possible to get 10L/100km out of either if driven normally.

best idea is to decide what you want from it, and take both from a test drive.

if a relatively stock, quick wagon is what you want, go the leggy, if you want to mod the shit out of it and chuck a stroker in it, go the stagea...

last time i went to the drags, i had a 3" catback, and 12psi... vs. a S2 stag with 12psi, safc, fmic, pod, exhaust.. (basic RB25 mods)

i did a 13.76, and the stag did mid 14's..

i did destroy an auto gearbox at the drags too, however i'm about to do a manual conversion in a mates leggy, and he has been trying for a month non stop to kill his current auto, and it WILL NOT die, limiter in neutral into drive, etc etc... it just comes down to the service history.

here's my super vr-4. :)

^^^^i'd also take a legnum over a stagea any day. Drive train is awesome borrowing alot of the technology including the AYC from the CE series evos. They would be awesome as a family car and i'm thinking of getting one so i can transfer my drums around alot easier.

I'm a bit biased as i'm an evo guy myself owning a lancer gsr for my first car but i reckon the legnum just looks better overall as well. :)

like this one :P

yep, 800 super vr-4's were made, only came in auto, and got a choice of silver/red.

came with factory body kit, lots of red/chrome shit, recaro's, and a few other bits and pieces...

and no it's not my skid, i noticed i parked right on it after i took the photo, haha.

actually i was pretty interested in what galant/legnums get with a full tank of petrol. How big is the tank? if it goes better then my r32 i'll be very happy lolz. $80-85 to fill up to full and get just under 500kms using bp for my r32.

Yeah, near stock for sometihng I wasn't going to thrash too hard I'd take the Legnum over a Stagea. At that point all the problems described above don't really apply (aside from the fuel economy) and people don't think you're driving a Volvo.

With anything more than the lightest of bolt-ons I'd take a Stagea. Whether it's RB or VQ powered, there are plenty of bits available.

The boxes actually aren't that bad, but they need 1) regular maintenance and trans fluid changes and 2) a small trans cooler if you're working it hard.

Most of the dramas occur when the original Japanese owner thinks "maintenance" is something you pay your ex-wife...

its not bad but it looks like in that price you might be paying the importers a few grand in profit. i've seen manual galant/legnums on www.j-spec.com go for $12,000-$15,000 landed and complied so that would just a around $2000 for insurance and rego and then your off.

maybe check out the www.j-spec.com site and contact the guys as they do come past really good cars. if you cant buy right now maybe it would be good to pay the deposit fee first if you found a good one and wait till you can pay the rest when it lands but yeh as your importing from japan you won't be able to see it yourself except for a few hundred pictures they take for you. the good thing is that i've heard only good things about them so check them out. Iron chef i think has imported a few good deals too.

there was a legnum with leather interior etc on boostcruising going for $13K.

manual too. - search for "legnum" in cars for sale and it should still be there..

I think they are great looking cars.

I don't know how anyone could like the look of any stag that doesn't have an R34 front end.

even then it looks waaaaay too big.

I see no-one mentioned the stag being 1700+kg and the legnum being under 1600kg.

One of the mags (HPI or ZOOM) have got a vr4 sedan as their current project car.

same car just sedan and called galant VR4 rather than legnum vr4.

I was sl close to buying one of these its not funny.... Loved the look of them and loved how you dont see many around, however the fact you cant do heaps of mods and small engine bay + parts not available everywhere turned me off.... So i decided to just get the R33 as i think Stagea's are foul at the rear but awesome from front.... But hey thats just my opinion

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
