Hi all,

Used to have a Skyline a while back but had to "grow" up and get myself a 4 cyl new shape corolla as its cheaper to run and drinks less fuel.

Its also a lot more boring to drive but what can you do, Ill save quicker for a new GTR :bomb_ie:

Anyway my question is this: is Mobil 1 0w-40 Gold oil good for a vvti 4 cyl Corolla engines?

I heard that Toyota recommends 10w-30 or 5w-30... IMO its too thick on start up.

??

for Australian conditions the best bet is 5w30 or 40

0 can be used but its very thin so it sinks to the bottom on the sump overnight and theres not much left in the head so some cars have noisy coldstarts; eg my beema which rattled soooo bad using 0w40; changed to 5w40 and it got quieter...then 10w40 and it disappeared.

Does Mobil1 have 5w-30 weight?

Just wondering, what fuel are you putting into your Corolla btw? I've got an 06 Rolla as a daily driver, and haven't had it all that long.

And regarding oil change, are you doing it or are you getting a toyota/authorised workshop to do it? If the former, how are keeping the warranty? I'd really like to service the rolla myself but still have another 30,000kms of warranty left.

I put V power as I have a small incentive under my sleeve and get better deal that way... I average around 7.7 litres per 100 KM atm but it went as low as 7.2 litres, freeway and normal 60 km/h zone driving.

I rang Toyota to do a service (oil change and filter) and they quoted me something around $200 or so (that's with me supplying the oil and oil filter)... I thought "stuff that" and called Ultratune, they quoted me $90 bucks if I supplied oil and filter. I went with Ultratune as I still have another 2 years of warranty left. As soon as my car loses warranty (its 2007 model) I will do the oil changes myself.

Nice one, I may do the same I reckon (i.e. supply oil and filter and take it to ultratune). Thanks for that.

No probs mate!

I got one near my house so its convenient walking distance!

I count the days until I can afford to buy another sports car though... lol

Hopefully within the next 4-5 years I can pay for a new GTR :P

2007 corolla still has 1 year manufaturer warranty.

if you use something outside what they recommend and it breaks you're screwed.

and can you tell me how it is that your thought of "I think it's too thick" is a good enough reason against Toyota's years of research and experience?

Just put in an oil that has the weight it recommends.

Pick a brand you want.

Fair points. Ill go higher weight ratio and stick with Mobil.

for the weight, why not open the owners manual and see what weight they recommend and then use the closest to that that you can find.

unless you are planning on racing it what they recommend is going to better for it than what you are guessing it should run.

If the odd rental corolla can do 50,000 klms on the original oil i dont suppose it really matters what you put it!!!!! It may sound far fetched!!! but i have seen this occur!!!! the hardest part is getting the mud out of the engines! this was the older 1.8!! the new one might have smaller oil galleries, but they are a pretty strong little engine!! im thinking that by your avatar you have a zr levin!?!? nice one buddy!!

Well Toyota is known for reliability so hopefully this little rolla is just as good

I really like the engine note for the 1.8 litre... sounds pretty tough for a stock car and kicks really well too. if I could strip down the weight... would be even better.

Actually I own the base model ascent... the avatar pic aint mine... but I do plan to put HID kit into it. :D

    • Hi GTSBoy, Excuse my ignorance but what does a "Bad" Knee point mean ?
    • HFM BM57 has a "bad" knee point, IIRC. It's not the same thing as the later R chassis MC.
    • The ATTESSA is functionally identical to R34; there were a bunch of JDM models that continued ATTESSA including Fuga/Q70, Skyline/Q50, Cima etc as an option. All with Auto only and I think mostly for snow regions. AFAIK there were no AWD VR30DDTT sold in Australia - it is on my to do list to check regs for racing a LHD car in Targa/ATR/AASA/CAMS events because if I can get the auto to work it would be interesting to run a 4wd car The Ecuteck TCM tuning is the same model as their ECU tuning, they already have it for R35 and Dose's favourite, BMW. You buy "points" to allow your computer to be tuned, buy either a bluetooth (phone app) or bluetooth+USB+Key (phone and PC) dongle, and pay for a tune that will be locked to your tuner ( ). You can also access the tuning software yourself but 1. it is mega expensive and 2. these computers have a billion parameters that intersect, so how could you ever spend enough time on it to get a decent result.
    • Or, is it a case of what it is like owning an R series Skyline? NFI what the previous owner has done or fiddled with... Ha ha ha After reading through this thread, I went on a bit of a research about the Q50/Q60. Now I'm quite intrigued by them! Is the AWD in them more like a WRX where it's always AWD, or is it more like the ATTESSA in the GTRs? By the sound of this TCU tuning, this sounds like a case of someone has made some real software for it, and you just need the right piece of hardware, and then you license that specific vehicle/TCU. Or is this a case of the software will be really expensive so only a few tuners have it, and you still have to pay a license per vehicle?
    • By popular demand.. it was a coil. Got my hands on 1 new OEM coil, replaced with the one that made the less noise difference when I unplugged it while the car was running and started the car up. No stutter and the engine light was gone. I guess I’ll buy the other 5 they have lol
