Hey All,

I'm thinking of purchasing one of these new Catco cats that JustJap are selling for $175.

If anyone is using or has used this particular cat, could you please give some feedback on what you think of it.

Cheers.

I'm going to get one 2 just to replace my stock item. For the money, they should be alright, but I'm not expecting a huge improvement. As long as it don't give me negative gain, i'll be happy.

Also interested in other ppl's experience with them before I get one from JJ.

There was a post i found whilst searching for cat info about Catco Vs Magic Cat but the post just fissled out with no answers.

It started out looking like it would be informative once all the strutting was done and a test was organised but alas nothing come of it.

Then again it was about weather the cats actually converted the exhaust gas into a gas which would pass EPA.

I want one to but it must, "Be a cat not just a pipe with mesh in it"

Hi all,

We are actually waiting on some specific flow data from Catco, but these are a high quality, ceramic internal high flow cat.

Catco has been around for a long time, are made in the USA, and are proven performers.

We use these particular cars in many of our street and race prepared GTR's including Darron's BNR32 which makes an easily 330awkw with the Catco 3" ceramic high flow which has been in his car for 3 years now.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Steve

Hi mate, further on this one, there is some flow comparision information including flow rates between Catco Metal cats and a couple of other market alternatives available on Catco's website - This may be of assistance to you in choosing the cat that will be best for your application.

it's worth noting that catco metal cats are not the $175 ones, and also are listed as "race cats" which usually means they don't meet the street legal requirements.

On the catco website it says the metal cats meet EPA requirements.

Hope these cats hold up, I bought a JJR $199 special ceramic cat and it dislodged itself within 6 months...

blocked up my exhaust system and left some ceramic bits of shiet in the exhaust, I took it out and bashed the internals out, wasted a good $199.

Ok great :D

Where did you get it from and how much?

Just got it from Just Jap, same one in the first post.

Hopefully its good quality, most people seem to think so, *fingers crossed*. I'll let you know how the emissions test goes.

There is no such thing as a JJR Cat.

Was it an X-Force one?

Its not hard to destroy a ceramic cat on a heavily modified/richly tuned car no matter what brand it is.

i must say that i wasnt happy with mine wen i bought it. installed it myself and i had an exhaust leak.

took it to my m8 who has an exhaust shop and he said he doesnt use them as theyve had problems.

he then looked at where the leak was and the flanges on the cat are thin and were warped. had to spend more money of mine just to get 2 new flanges welded onto it.

didnt notice much of a diff accel or power wise after putting it on. but i wasnt expecting to anyway.

ive got a 3'' metal one and its been in the car for 3 years it works for me,i think you pay for what you get.some jap ones like hks are $1200 so $160 one will work but i think if your tring to get every kw you can find wich may only be 5-10 kw more than get a larger cat for better flow or pay the big money.

Sorry I meant X-Force, that special JJR had on the SAU forum around 1 year ago.

    • I hope it's actually possible. This is a write off in insurance world.
    • Yup. 2-way with shallow ramp angles. Still works.
    • That was the first session so not a lot to take from the day. It was low 20s ambient and the coolant had got to 110 (and obviously had some pressure!) so that still needs to be addressed. I haven't downloaded the data yet but will. I had refilled the auto trans with Redline DT6 because it claimed the best viscosity I could find at 100o. It wasn't really long enough to get a good feel for that; while the trans got to 100o in the session it still wasn't shifting crisply as I hoped. I think I'll try a few more sessions before judging. No steering motor overheat but I'd hope not in only 1 session! But finally the suspension; it was night and day over the standard stuff and the car was a couple of seconds quicker on the same crappy tyres, which is a huge difference. I'll stick with that and get some sway bars and a mechanical diff sorted too and see how that all goes together
    • I guess it’s partially a compromise of how my car is used, wanting to be able to switch from drift to grip with track side on-car adjustment. Also partially with the way the knuckles are set there is more static camber but less dynamic camber gain.
    • OK, so update from the track day on Friday It was a classic "an unfortunate series of events'. There were a few cars around and when i checked my mirror coming out of the fish hook I notice some smoke from the rear of mine. Looked again and it was getting much worse, I figured I'd blown a turbo or something to got off it and pulled off the racing line. However.... since it is a left hairpin into a right kink, I was on the inside of the next corner. There was a car passing me on the left and a big drop off over the ripple strip on the right......and someone had knocked the witch's hat that was on the apex about 1m onto the track. So, between those 3, I decided to mow down the cone and not damage my car/the other car. Right choice, but surprising result.  The car decided the cone was a small pedestrian so it blew the rear bonnet hinges up to protect their head in the upcoming person to car impact....I didn't see that coming and like an airbag deployment it happened super fast. Straight into the pits from there, everything was driving fine but it became clear it was a coolant leak not smoke, it was billowing up onto the windscreen. Onto the trailer and home. I'll do a separate thread about the repair (once I work out what it is ), but the immediate problem was the bonnet wouldn't open because the front was pinched onto the front bar and would not release. Ultimately we unbolted the hinge from the bonnet, pulled it back a little and it released from the front OK. "There's your problem", the top radiator hose had popped off at the radiator.
