R33 GTS4 Has the RB25DE engine and is 4WD, exterior and interior are the same as a GTS or GTS25, GTS25T

R32 GTS4 has the RB20DET engine and is 4WD, exterior and interior is the same as the GTE, GTS, GTS-T, GTS25

the main difference is the GTS4 is 4WD

and to confuse ATTESSA with a 4WD.

ATTESSA (the driveline system used in GTS4's and GTR's) is completely diffrent to a 4WD.

ATTESSA, in normal conditions sends all power to the rear wheels - just like a normal rear wheel drive car. When G sensors sence a certain amount of G's in any 3 dimentions (up-down, left-right, front-back) and also speed, steering angle and road speed vs RPM differences, a certain percentage of power from the rear wheels will be sent to the front wheels. This will continue till traction is re-gained and then power will be re-sent to the rears.

Diffrences in GTS/T vs GTS4/R include:

Gear box

Transfer box

Front diff

Front drive shaft

ATTESSA ECU

(all the things used to drive the front wheels)

As well as a "Front Wheel Percentage" gauge inside the cabin (in the gauge cluster for GTS4's and part of the 3 piece gauge cluster for GTR's)

Thats about it

my r33 gts4 doesnt have this torque split gauge. though im lead tobeleive the r32 does.

Also here is something mull over.

ive often heard it said that a gts4 is rwd in perfect conditions..or normal driving. My attessa has been non functional for months due to failed g sensor, and the car was diffinately rwd. (abs and 4wd lights on perminantly on dash)

during this time the car was very light inthe steering department, tracked quite well round corners with minimal understeer and had the obvious power oversteer.

then i fixed the gsensor ..thus restorin the attessa to functioning. now if the "only as needed" were true then there should be no difference in feel or behaviour. however steering is heavier (remenisent of front drive cars) and even when not going hard, on a particularly polished local round about i got power understeer followed by over steer.

so i would guess (and as i have no torque gauge it's just that) the front wheels are driving albeit in a minimal capacity almost all of the time.

food for thought.

Yip. In the 33's and 34's 5% of th torque is constantly being sent to the front wheels.

Also, the 33's and 34's track the G's speed, angle etc. at a quicker rate - every 100th of a second vs the 32 at every 10th of a second

dont forget the bottom end of the engine has a few differences (such as a different shape to fit in the engine bay and obliviously a different sump) therefor a gts25\t cant be installed because the engines size is different and will have to engineer the engine mounts to fit it.

hesh your skyline does have the cluster because you stated that it read 4WD which should say 'slip' next to that one aswell ;), (meaning its the gts4 cluster) slip light will turn on when there is a loss of traction, 4WD light will turn on or flash only when there us a fault in the system and obviously you have one haha.

ECU is different too......

ummm you have 4WD diff's

suspension

all your steering components, ie pump, rack etc

brakes are apparently different but i looked at the computers at work the other day and all non turbo skylines fell under the same brake pad, even if there was ABS so i would like someone with a GTS4 to confirm this as the computers see no difference in the GTS4's brakes.

thats all that pops i to mind atm

thats all i can think of atm

eug i think thats the hicas......erm han on ..no ..memory playing tricks..the did change the attessa to attessa ETS and ETS (pro??)

interestingly the gesnsors all have same part number except the modle code...and my car is rtunning fine ona 32 generation sensor ...

yes indeed i have the 4wd and slip lights. but no gauge to say how much torque goes to the front wheels ala the r32 gts4 and the r33 gtr. and although the slip light comes on when im booting it ..the car drives differently even at low speeds when no slip is being lit up....thus i am going to go withthe idea that a proportion of the power goes tothe front on a gts4 r33 all the time...after all 200 times a second is kinda fast to check grip levels isnt it lol....

with regard to brakes. i have ABS (uses same sensors as the 4wd on the wheels) fault on one system will knock out both ..(as mine did ..due to g sensor failing...both lights up on dash fault code 63 if anyone is looking.....flashes onthe ecu in the boot 6 then 3 ...repeated)

size of the r33 gts4 brakes are identical tothe gts25. i had both..the gts25s (rb25de auto 5 speed) and the gts4 saloon...brakes are identical dimentions calipers.

however the rb20e engined r33gts would appear to have smaller brakes....and also in some cases is listed as having different suspension ..though peoplehave fitted gts and gts t springs with no problems.

i think the suspension is the same too because i sold me old coilovers to a guy with a gtst and he had no problems with them.

In the R33, the Suspension aftermarket wise, is the same.

Stock for stock, the rear end, is the same.

The front end though, the GTS4 runs a slightly stiffer front shock, to take the extra weight of the AWD system.

I WAS running GTS4 front springs in my GTS-t, made it less wanting to swing the tail out, and was slightly more understeery... Actually made it nice to drive.

Not sure on mounts in other R3* models though... Just know springs are defo interchangeable, and whole shocks 33 - 33...

the front end would apear to be gtr derivative on the 33 whilst the rear subframe is the same as the rwd models. this holds true for the saloons as well. i have a whiteline rear antiroll bar on my saloon thats a coupe part.

The block isnt different to fit in the engine bay, there is only the slight difference on the bottom of the block where there are extra provisions for the front diff to bolt up. Other than that they are exactly the same.

Also the brakes are the same as the normaly na skylines for the r33 and r34's

Steering is also exactly the same in the r33-r34

one is hydraulic and one a electric system no??

i think your mixing hicas and the awd together :P

hicas is hydraulic in the r32, electric in the r33 and my r34 doesnt have it all haha

the awd pump are all hydraulic in all series :)

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
