I am going to buy my first car soon and am just researching and learning more in depth about Skylines currently.

I am thinking about buying a r32 gtr, however the p-plate laws forbid me to drive one legally. Due to this, I have been thinking about ways of avoiding defects if I ever get pulled over for a check of my car.

What I came up is, I will probably custom make one of them turbo shields and spray it black to look stock and cover the twin turbos in the engine. Something that looks like this but will be trying to cover as much of the 2 turbos as possible: http://www.turbometrics.com/store/images/cuscowrxshield.jpg

I'm not going to stop just yet, after this, i am thinking of getting an aftermarket intake pipe to replace the current one on the engine that says "twin turbo" on it and also spray it black to look stock.

I think after combining both these 2 things, most cops will be convinced that the car isnt turbo and let me go. What do you guys think off the idea? Will it work, will it not?

Beside all this, theres the other problem of if in the incident of someone hitting my car...The car will be insured under my dad's name. This way, it will reduce the cost and less hassle. I am pretty sure, even though it is insured but not under my name, in the case of an accident, I will not be covered because I am driving an illegal p-plate car. What I'm thinking is, what if in the case of the accident, I provide my dad's details. Then the car will be covered. Will this idea work?

Cops are not gonna be confused by a heat shield and painted intake pipe. There are other things indicating its a GTR. Intercooler, badging, vehicle plate etc. I would advise strongly against doing it as you will not get away with it, or not get away with it for long at the very most.

As for the insurance. If you insure it in your dads name and then provide his details in an accident it leaves you open to criminal charges for fraud and providing false information (I think that is correct anyway)

Normally u can drive your parents car if you are noted as a driver of the car but as its turboed this will not work.

Also if the car is in an accident and it needs to be looked and and quoted for repair and they see its turboed then u will be in big trouble

Bottom line, dont do it. P-Plate laws are there for a reason.

I had another car in mind aswell. A 1989 Isuzu Impulse/Piazza. The turbo versions are I think about 104 kilo watts. Even such a weak turbocharged car like this is illegal for me to drive? If it is illegal for a p plater to drive this, its just ridiculous. Whats do you guys think?

Also, how hard is it for me to get an r32 2door with an rb25de? they seem very rare. That is going to be my first preference for an N/A car.

Cops will just check the plates and it will come back saying it is an R32 GTR and after that your pretty much f**ked. As for insurance I wouldn't bother trying to fool them after an accident. All it takes is one slip of the tongue while talking to the insurance etc and your out of a car and you'll have to pay all the damages yourself or just continue to pay off a loan on a damaged car that you can't drive.

At the end of the day there is too much heartache involved if something goes wrong. Grab the 32 and put the RB25DE in it and enjoy it for a couple of years before moving up to a GTR.

So register it as a Skyline Coupe n then insure it under someone elses details as a GTR? The more you try to hide the fact that its a GTR the harder they'll hit you when you get found out.

Its a stupid idea really lol

What if i just buy a stock as rock r32 gtr, do the stealth mods to hide the turbo and just leave it at that, no mods and drive with no p plates on and darkest legal tint. Ill put the p plate on the parcel shelf though, incase a cop pulls me over and i'll just say that it fell off and i didnt notice it. And just drive like a civilized person normally.

And about whether the cops will find out its a gtr by searching up my number plate, I never knew you could register the car as just "Nissan Coupe". If this is possible, then thats good. I probably will have to remove the GTR badge aswell :D

So the main problem is with insurance. I guess you can only just drive very carefully, only solution to this.

Cops are not going to believe u when u say its not a GTR

most cops werent born yesturday, they can tell its a GTR or at least a turboed skyline. Stealth mods wont do anything, think about it, what kinda non turboed car has two intake pipes on the righ and a front facing plenum on the left.

Get an R33 or R32 GTS4 or something

plenty of people on here will stand by them saying they are still a fun car to drive. Then when your P-plating days are over just whack a 26 in there. Build a deent one while ur on your P's

There is no way to completly hide the fact that its a gtr unless ur willing to remove - badges, wide guards, all engine pipes and replace with non turbo looking ones (no idea how u would properly do that), remove vin plate (illegal anyway) and replace with a N/A one

as for the low powered car u had in mind..... Dont quote me on this but if its a 3 cylinder turbo producing less then 80kw or maybe 100kw then u are allowed to drive it. Also turbo diesels as long as they dont outweigh the power to weight ratios allowed.

something like that anyway. I rolled around in a VL Calais NA with a cammed RB30 for a bit. It was pretty decent for a non turboed car.....

Its all well and good saying you will drive like a civilised person and not cause any trouble etc but its a lot harder in practice. Not to mention driving carefully won't stop cops pulling you over, this happens to most people with skylines and is bound to happen at least once while you're on your P's.

I was sitting at the lights and cops pulled up next to me, lights go green and their lights go on and they ask me to pull over for a random license check...

And no matter how careful you are nothing stops somebody else from being a retard and hitting you. What if they don't have insurance? Or their doing exactly the same thing as you and their insurance is void aswell.

Its your choice but I wouldn't want to put my car at that kind of risk. Its not worth the extra 2 or 3 years of driving it...

Just throwing it out there for the sake of it because I don't know what kind of situation your in but are you sure you can afford the running costs of a GTR. Its one thing being able to afford to buy one but the actual maintenance of a GTR can get pretty exxy especially if you find yourself needing a rebuild.

hmm, u have a good point there.

Does anyone know if there are much r32 skyline 26s in australia(the r32 with the non turbo rb26de)?

so you are saying if the car is turbo but under 125kw/tonne then its legal for p platers to drive? I thought this system was completely removed already and replaced by what we have now? Does this mean i can drive the r32 gts-t then? That is right on the 125kw/tonne mark.

Edited by FASTSKYLINE

how many rb26de??? yeah in aus.. zero lol

i think state transport will have the VIN recorded as a GTR..

3 cylinder turbo producing less then 80kw or maybe 100kw...

where did you get 125kw from? and yeah you can drive a 6 cyl r32 gts-t.. as he stated it's 3 cyl turb your allowed

Edited by .:: GimpS-R34 ::.

you can't compare SAU with #chan boards lol...

in short your idea is utterly moronic, how stupid do you think cops are (honestly all cops seem to assume my car is a GT-R until I pop the bonnet!)

if you can't drive a turbo or a v8 at all on your p's (excluding diesels and 3cyl), why post on a public forum asking how to blatantly circumvent the rules? just suck it down and save your money.

no it wont work. it's illegal. if you crash your insurance will not cover you, or the driver you hit. you likely o get pulled over too. and yes they will know it's a GTR. just because you are a bit clueless doesn't mean everyone else it...

closed.

Oh come on - could have closed on-flame at least :P

Ive gotta have my piece though of this :D

Unless you intend to hide the turbos under your bed (yes, there are two of them), you stand zero chance.

Even then, taking the turbos off still build plates the car a a GTR/RB26 TURBO.

The old "my p-plate fell down" doesnt work. I was fined for it twice back in my day, no demerits back then though so it was worth the fine

So you get

3x Demerits for failure to display Ps

3x Demerits for driving a car marked as illegal

1x Defect for illegally tinted windows and whatever else you get reamed for

Bang - 6 points.

Bang - You've just lost your license on the spot

Bang - You have a car with a defect

Get one more point after your license suspension is over and then BANG your off to court

And about whether the cops will find out its a gtr by searching up my number plate, I never knew you could register the car as just "Nissan Coupe". If this is possible, then thats good. I probably will have to remove the GTR badge aswell

The fact that the engine number for a start has RB26 and its on your rego sticker... You aren't going to get around it no matter how clever you think you are.

Also consider the build plate has enough information on it (RB26DETT for a start), and its illegal to remove that also.

Also, in regards to the comment about all turbo cars being illegal - did you even look @ VicRoads website?

ALL TURBOS ARE ILLEGAL, along with listed high powered N/A cars/V8's and so on.

Its in the plainest writing possible so there is no confusion or 'playing dumb'.

    • Did this end up working? Did you take some pictures?
    • And finally, the front lower mount. It was doubly weird. Firstly, the lower mount is held in with a bracket that has 3 bolts (it also acts as the steering lock stop), and then a nut on the shock lower mount itself. So, remove the 3x 14mm head bolts , then the 17mm nut that holds the shock in. From there, you can't actually remove the shock from the lower mount bolt (took me a while to work that out....) Sadly I don't have a pic of the other side, but the swaybar mounts to the same bolt that holds the shock in. You need to push that swaybar mount/bolt back so the shock can be pulled out past the lower control arm.  In this pic you can see the bolt partly pushed back, but it had to go further than that to release the shock. Once the shock is out, putting the new one in is "reverse of disassembly". Put the top of the shock through at least one hole and put a nut on loosely to hold it in place. Put the lower end in place and push the swaybar mount / shock bolt back in place, then loosely attach the other 2 top nuts. Bolt the bracket back in place with the 14mm head bolts and finally put the nut onto the lower bolt. Done....you have new suspension on your v37!
    • And now to the front.  No pics of the 3 nuts holding the front struts on, they are easy to spot. Undo 2 and leave the closest one on loosely. Underneath we have to deal with the wiring again, but this time its worse because the plug is behind the guard liner. You'll have to decide how much of the guard liner to remove, I undid the lower liner's top, inside and lower clips, but didn't pull it full off the guard. Same issue undoing the plug as at the rear, you need to firmly push the release clip from below while equally firmly gripping the plug body and pulling it out of  the socket. I used my fancy electrical disconnect pliers to get in there There is also one clip for the wiring, unlike at the rear I could not get behind it so just had to lever it up and out.....not in great condition to re-use in future.
    • Onto the rear lower shock mount. It's worth starting with a decent degrease to remove 10+ years of road grime, and perhaps also spray a penetrating oil on the shock lower nut. Don't forget to include the shock wiring and plug in the clean.... Deal with the wiring first; you need to release 2 clips where the wiring goes into the bracket (use long nose pliers behind the bracket to compress the clip so you can reuse it), and the rubber mount slides out, then release the plug.  I found it very hard to unplug, from underneath you can compress the tab with a screwdriver or similar, and gently but firmly pull the plug out of the socket (regular pliers may help but don't put too much pressure on the plastic. The lower mount is straightforward, 17mm nut and you can pull the shock out. As I wasn't putting a standard shock back in, I gave the car side wiring socket a generous gob of dialectric grease to keep crap out in the future. Putting the new shock in is straightforward, feed it into at least 1 of the bolt holes at the top and reach around to put a nut on it to hold it up. Then put on the other 2 top nuts loosely and put the shock onto the lower mounting bolt (you may need to lift the hub a little if the new shock is shorter). Tighten the lower nut and 3 upper nuts and you are done. In my case the BC Racing shocks came assembled for the fronts, but the rears needed to re-use the factory strut tops. For that you need spring compressors to take the pressure off the top nut (they are compressed enough when the spring can move between the top and bottom spring seats. Then a 17mm ring spanner to undo the nut while using an 8mm open spanner to stop the shaft turning (or, if you are really lucky you might get it off with a rattle gun).
    • You will now be able to lift the parcel shelf trim enough to get to the shock cover bolts; if you need to full remove the parcel shelf trim for some reason you also remove the escutcheons around the rear seat release and you will have to unplug the high stop light wiring from the boot. Next up is removal of the bracket; 6 nuts and a bolt Good news, you've finally got to the strut top! Remove the dust cover and the 3 shock mount nuts (perhaps leave 1 on lightly for now....) Same on the other side, but easier now you've done it all before
