2008 Mobile Speed Camera - Qld

Been awhile since I posted anything useful. Below are a couple of links that were made in Jan this year about the new Mercedes Vito mobile speed cameras QPS use.

I went pass one today and wasn't sure if they took readings and pictures from the front or back, so i did a little googling to help me out. I found a link to an Aussie forum with some interesting info about how they operate.

Yeah its because of the introduction of the new vito vans that qld police are pushing to make motorbikes have a front number plate...

The new vito's cannot catch a motorbike speeding as they only take photos from the rear of the van, hence oncoming shots only...

As where the landcruisers could get anything cause hey took photos from the front of the vechicle hence takin a photo of the rear of the offending car/bike, however you oftern saw the landcruisers as you were about to pass them and a generous application of the brakes was generally enough to avoid a ticket... The vito's over come these flaws that the landcruiser exposed...

i saw 1 of these mofo's on beaudesert rd on wednesday... dark green with dark blue "POLICE" on the side of it... couldnt see it... my gf rekns she saw 1 a few weeks ago in the same spot at night... and this 1 didnt even have "POLICE" on the side of it... "every k over is a killer" was the only way 2 know it was a radar van! thats fu(ked up...

i guess the QLD police/government need more of our money...

Yep I saw the Green one as well, but on Algester Rd....it's a very strange colour as it doesn't immediatley trigger fear I wonder if that means they have new ruling about where they need to put the "speed camera in use" sign. As the Vito I saw had it in front of the vehicle, no point it warning you way after it's got you....oh wait maybe that is the idea

Firstly let me sa when it comes to speed camera discussions my statements are only advice. Based on knowledge learnt when working in conjunction with the QLD police on the fit out and calibration of these vans/4wd's. My current job now has very little to do with these projects anymore and as such things might have changed a bit in the last 2 years...

No, no... So with a landcruiser you (the speeding car/bike) needed to go past the car speeding...

As the device that detects speeds is in the front window of the landcruiser, so you need to be speeding past the car to get done...

Then it takes a photo of the rear of your car/bike... Sometime they have been known to park the wrong way to take front photos, but it rare and illegal on their behalf...

However with the Vito's it is tracking your speed 300 to 400 metres behind the van... So its already got you speeding before you even approach the van for the photo evidence...

In many cases you wont even know its a speed camera until the last minute and by then your already gone and its all too late to brake...

Down side to the Vito's is they cannot book a motorbike, as there is no front number plate...

Example 1 I've attached a quick drawing, it shows how you they position to take photos. (example1 is the standard positioning)

The arrows show the direction the vechicle is facing (ive used the bruce highway as my example out side caltex at bald hills as their always there)

Example 2 shows how they can use a landcruiser to take front on photos (which is common practice on the bruce hwy)... In this arrangement also its believed they can cover traffic in one direction only at any given time, so the falsh mounted on the bull bar will indicate which side is being targeted...

Example 3 like number 2 shows how a Vito can be set up in the same fashion as the landcruiser hidden by scrub or bush's and qith a quick adjustment it can be monitoring traffic going in the opposite direct without moving the van...

The vito i saw was a dark grey/maybe green and it was parked on warrigal rd adjacent the school, shooting towards the city. So i suppose for those who might have a little heavy foot coming down that hill and also a lazy foot going up the hill, beware! pretty much will get you over the top.

They break their own rules when it comes to placement. blatent revenue raising one i saw the other day. Sitting on the side of hte road in a 60 zone coming back from the port of brisbane just before the corner where you can turn off to fort lyton, i have never seen an accident there (its a straight piece of road) the only reason they put it there i can determin is to get anyone who might have missed the 60 sign.

Heh. Since its not a fixed camera, they aren't (usually, though it is possible depending on placement), directly in line with your direction of travel. Thanks to trigonometry, any reading taken from an agle away from the diection of travel will be less. greater the angle the less it is. Eg, if your coming up to a van, and your 400 meters away, and its right on the side of the road, it'll clock you doing pretty much what you are doing. However, by the time you are right next to the van, your speed towards the van is pretty much zero.

Not sure if the cops are allowed to compensate for that error (however, i'd assume that fixed speed camera's have that caculated in automatically)

They have had these van's up here on the coast for atleast 2 years being used that i have seen. they have a white ones up here. My boss has a vito's van, and yes they do fool you, a few people who own vito's park them out side there houses on the road and they look like speed camera vans. hell dodgey, so any con the fruiterer can look like a police van now! lol
