hey everyone yesterday i was driving not to far from my house and there was a big bang like a backfire didnt think to much of it but then it happened again. My dad was following me and said there was like a big cloud of brown/black smoke.I pulled into my driveway only to notice one of my exhaust wheels sitting inside my cannon. So obviously i was cut and stressin out.But more importantly im stressin more about if anything went into my motor. The wheels that ended up in my car is pretty much complete but has chips of it etc.The car drove normal but wouldnt boost so i nursed it home n turned it off. When tryin to boost it was like aa high pitch noise with a type of rattle to it.Has anyone had this happen to their gtr before any help or information would be greatly appreciated

Hi

Yes I have had this happen before, however I was one of the few unlucky ones and the ceramic dust generated when the turbine smashed into the turbine housing and took out my engine. I an just getting the rebuilt engine back together now.

Most people don't have this problem (engine being damaged by ceramic dust) but I think we are going to start seeing an increase in (especially R32) GTR ceramic turbo failures they are simply getting past their designed working lifetime.

My engine died immediately as a result of lost compression. I was backing off at relatively low RPM when mine let go, which I'm confident is one of the only conditions which would allow significant amounts of ceramic dust into the engine.

I would definitely suggest checking your compression, perhaps leak down test. I can sympathize with your situation, it sucks. Just get some garret 2860 -7's (if you stick with a std engine).

Hope it all goes well.

When you pull the turbo's check the comp wheels, if they are stuffed then a compression and leak down test is a must.

HKS GT-SS's or Garrett 2860R-7's (also R34 GT-R N1's) are what you want if you're staying on standard internals. Either of these wcan pull up to 330awkw's with the right supporting mods. 300awkw's is easily achievable on each with the right mods too.

An even cheaper option is to go with R34 GT-R turbo's they're still ceramic but are ball bearing and cam be had dirt cheap from someone upgrading. You can easily pull 250awkw's on these with safe boost levels.

Good luck mate and let us know how you go. Pics are always good too.

Cheers

Yeah, had this happen. Some say there will be a problem. But when my rear turbo went there was no residual damage. As for replacement turbos, it all depends where you are going and how much hp you want....2860-5 were my choice. 430whp on standard internals, but these will support more power on a rebuilt or stroker engine down the road (when the $AU stops getting butt raped :D )

with regards to r34 gtr turbo's can they handle more boost being ball bearing ? I see alot of r34 gtr stock turbos being boosted to 17psi with no problems. I know they are still ceramic but i've yet to hear a r34 gtr turbo damaging engines like the r32 and r33 gtr's.

Can anyone shed more light on the max boost of stock r34 gtr turbos.

cheers all

check and see if the comp wheel is blown. if thats in tact u shouldnt have a problem. Just replace your turbos

Not quite.

Its the exhaust wheel failing that causes the damage

They are just 10 years newer, doesnt mean they wont do exactly the same thing. Its just going to take a while.

So the 'max' IMO is the same.

Is that the case Nismoid? I thought it was the comp wheels letting go that allowed the engine to ingest ceramic dust? Do they suck in junk from the exhaust wheel letting go via back pressure?

Yeah what Nismoid said is accurate. They're newer so will last longer but should still be treated with the same respect. They'll spool a bit quicker being BB but they're still ceramic.

well 2 of the last motors ive pulled apart that have had blown turbos in there life show peices of ceramic on the head quench areas and inbedded in the pistons, u can tell because its usually on only the front or rear 3 cylinders and when they deck it u can still see pitted holes and the decking machine doesnt like the ceramic pieces lol.

You answered your own question :P

Ceramic dust can only come from the exhaust wheel, so its gotta be coming from there in this instance... as we've heard a lot where there is ceramic dust on the rear of the 3 cyclinders as its usually the rear that lets go... but can go either way

The comp wheel isn't ceramic, cant be coming from him! :)

Ahh thanks for clarifying :P

mate,

sorry to hear about the turbos, i had the same thing happen to me,

i put my foot down in my '89 R32 GTR around a corner and the power just cut on me and a huge ploom of black smoke came out the exhaust. then it sounded terrible and wouldnt want to boost.

i've got a pair of Garrett GT2860R-5's sitting next to me, that i am getting installed in just over a week.

the worst part about it was that the turbos blew on the friday and i was getting it dyno tuned on monday which was my birthday, so its a pretty expensive birthday present to myself.

i was only running stock boost too.

hopefully i can get some real good power out of the car now.

    • I hope it's actually possible. This is a write off in insurance world.
    • Yup. 2-way with shallow ramp angles. Still works.
    • That was the first session so not a lot to take from the day. It was low 20s ambient and the coolant had got to 110 (and obviously had some pressure!) so that still needs to be addressed. I haven't downloaded the data yet but will. I had refilled the auto trans with Redline DT6 because it claimed the best viscosity I could find at 100o. It wasn't really long enough to get a good feel for that; while the trans got to 100o in the session it still wasn't shifting crisply as I hoped. I think I'll try a few more sessions before judging. No steering motor overheat but I'd hope not in only 1 session! But finally the suspension; it was night and day over the standard stuff and the car was a couple of seconds quicker on the same crappy tyres, which is a huge difference. I'll stick with that and get some sway bars and a mechanical diff sorted too and see how that all goes together
    • I guess it’s partially a compromise of how my car is used, wanting to be able to switch from drift to grip with track side on-car adjustment. Also partially with the way the knuckles are set there is more static camber but less dynamic camber gain.
    • OK, so update from the track day on Friday It was a classic "an unfortunate series of events'. There were a few cars around and when i checked my mirror coming out of the fish hook I notice some smoke from the rear of mine. Looked again and it was getting much worse, I figured I'd blown a turbo or something to got off it and pulled off the racing line. However.... since it is a left hairpin into a right kink, I was on the inside of the next corner. There was a car passing me on the left and a big drop off over the ripple strip on the right......and someone had knocked the witch's hat that was on the apex about 1m onto the track. So, between those 3, I decided to mow down the cone and not damage my car/the other car. Right choice, but surprising result.  The car decided the cone was a small pedestrian so it blew the rear bonnet hinges up to protect their head in the upcoming person to car impact....I didn't see that coming and like an airbag deployment it happened super fast. Straight into the pits from there, everything was driving fine but it became clear it was a coolant leak not smoke, it was billowing up onto the windscreen. Onto the trailer and home. I'll do a separate thread about the repair (once I work out what it is ), but the immediate problem was the bonnet wouldn't open because the front was pinched onto the front bar and would not release. Ultimately we unbolted the hinge from the bonnet, pulled it back a little and it released from the front OK. "There's your problem", the top radiator hose had popped off at the radiator.
